Crow’s Feet Commons Open UP Painted by Sheila Dunn

With builders like Pegoretti growing in popularity over the years, the idea of an “art bike” has certainly been given a lot of traction in the market. At the Chris King Swarm event in Bend, Oregon, Crow’s Feet Commons displayed this stunning OPEN UP, painted by local Bend artist, Sheila Dunn. The UPs have certainly signalled a sea change in the road, all-road and ‘gravel’ market, with their unique drop stay design, allowing for road cranks, with an XC tire selection, all made from the utmost of carbon technology, and designed for anything from a casual road ride to full-on endurance bikepacking events.

So what did Sheila use as inspiration for this build? Well, I’d say she didn’t have to look any further than out of her window.

I must say, this has to be one of Sheila’s fastest-looking canvases to date! If you’d like one of these custom painted OPEN UP frames, holler at Crow’s Feet, who is taking deposits for 10 right now.

2015 NAHBS: Silca’s Custom Paint Series Pumps

2015 NAHBS: Silca’s Custom Paint Series Pumps

If there is any pump worthy of the North American Handmade Bicycle Show, it’s the Silca Superpista Ultimate Floor Pump. These puppies are hardly your standard-issue shop pump. For starters, they’re machined in Indianapolis, Indiana, using the highest quality materials including race car engine hosing. Silca then dumped the standard issue +/-5% industrial gauge for a +/-1% laboratory grade gauge that reads from 0-160 psi. There’s also a stainless chuck and a magnetic bed, keeping it in place when not in use. All this with a rosewood handle and weighing in at 7lbs.

Anyway, back to NAHBS and Silca’s presence there. New for 2015, Silca is offering their pumps at a paint-grade finish, along with various gauge and hose colors, allowing for customization. What you’re seeing here are a few examples they had on deck with them at NAHBS. From a Pegoretti-painted (center) to a classic Martini racing Silca (right) and even half of a his/hers pairing (right), you can see the options are endless.

I felt like giving these unique pumps a treatment on par with the unique bicycles I shot at NAHBS. Contact Silca for more information and I can’t wait to see what people come up with.

Argonaut Cycles at Above Category

Watching Argonaut Cycles grow and gain traction in this market is exciting. Especially within the realm of retail, a world that most framebuilders decide to avoid due to margins. But sometimes, you find a home where your brand easily nestles in between the existing offerings.

Argonaut Cycles has teamed up with Above Category, along side BAUM, Pegoretti and Mosaic. Three exceptional frame builders who have mastered their materials. It’s not bad having such great company, is it?

Brooks Welcomes Framebuilders at B1866

I like this idea a whole lot! One of the most original frame builders of all time will be at the Brooks B1866 shop in Seven Dials, London next week. The saddle manufacturer is opening their doors to Dario Pegoretti to fit potential customers for a bike and to celebrate his new collaboration Brooks Cambium Saddle. Sounds pretty rad right? I wish I could be there to see this!

Fyxomatosis: Concorde Aquila Road

Andy, you devil you. Where do you get those wonderful toys? This 54cm Concorde Aquila road bike is stunning. The chevrons in the paint are crispy.

“Though PDM was a Dutch based team, the Concorde marque is Italian as prosciutto on melon. Out of the Ciocc factory, frames by the Concorde, Conti and Paganini name are all works of Pellizoli. All of them featuring the same cutout feature in the bottom bracket shell – just one of the signature touches. In the same way Dario Pegoretti built for Pinarello and subsequently established his own name, so too is Giovanni at the ripe old age of 69 years young.

Back to MG’s new ride

20 emails later, and an hour on the phone discussing the pros and cons of bar selection, gruppo and saddles – she is ready to go.

The Aquila (Italian for Eagle) was the top of the line offering in 1991. SLX frame and fork, neat internal routing of brake AND gear cabling. Concorde pantographed brake bridge, fork crown, head tube lugs and Columbus embossed head tube.

Equipped with Campagnolo 8 speed Chorus from 1991 – the exception being Record 1st generation ergopowers which came about in 1992.”

Rapha: D’Acciaio (Of Steel)

Apologies for getting this up so late but it’s partially Rapha’s fault for that. After a kick-ass time at their event and many Stellas, I’m a bit hungover this morning! D’Acciaio (Of Steel), is their final film with RSA Films and is now live on their homepage. Here’s the PR:

As with the others, this film will only be available on the Rapha homepage for 24 hours. With Dario Pegoretti as the subject, this film is a unique and concise exploration of a man that has continually been a subject within the cycling community. Compared to the narrative structure of the previous two films this one is more of a documentary take on this famous framebuilder from Italy. There are some great humorous moments that delve into the tortured and charismatic personality of Pegoretti.

Jeremy and everyone, it was great meeting you finally! You guys rule.

Rapha: A Throw of the Dice

Rapha‘s projects with Ridley Scott Associates kick off today. Check out the first feature, A Throw of the Dice above by clicking on the image and read a synopsis below:

The first film A Throw Of The Dice is Director Nick Livesey‘s take on famed Professional Bike Racer and Thrice Paris-Roubaix winner Johan Museeuw. Almost every piece of Rapha clothing has what we call an “Inside Story” placed somewhere in the garment. With the jerseys it is inside the back zippered pocket, and with our current collection of Club Jerseys we turned our focus to two ex-Pro racers (Sean Kelly, and Museeuw) and one current Professional Bicycle Framebuilder (Dario Pegoretti).

Speaking from a personal standpoint, I have seen the films and the one this Friday has to be the craziest of the three. It features footage from last years Paris Roubaix as well as footage from Museeuw’s winning years. It is a very intimate look at what the race means through the eyes of one of its fiercest competitors – The Lion of Flanders (Museeuw). The directors were given free reign to interpret as they will and it goes without saying that Livesey took this explorations to the utmost maximum to produce one of the strangest, most compelling and visually stunning short films about a bicycle racer that I have ever seen. It has been a treat for us to see and hear about these films as they have been in their development stages.

For the next three weeks Rapha will be offering 24-hour free screenings for the following short films:

Trailer One:
A Throw of the Dice
Premiers August 13th

Trailer Two:
Two Broad Arrows
Premiers August 20th

Trailer Three:
Of Steel
Premiers August 27th

This rules. Seriously don’t miss out!

Rapha: Of Steel

Rapha: Of Steel

Wow. Ridley Scott and Rapha? Big time right there.

The inspiration for Rapha products often comes from the places, riders and stories of road racing. Our 2010 Club Jerseys were inspired by Johan Museeuw, Sean Kelly and Dario Pegoretti. To further celebrate these colourful characters Rapha commissioned three short films. The Rapha story labels were the inspiration, but the directors were given free reign to interpret them as they pleased.

Renowned film directors Nick Livesey and Adrian Moat took up the challenge, along with photographer and long time Rapha collaborator Ben Ingham. The resulting films are a delight, exploring passion, craftsmanship and the psychology of racing and getting right to the heart of the sport we love. It has been a privilege to work with Ridley Scott Associates and such talented friends on these films. I hope you enjoy them.

Awesome!
