Sneakers and bikes go way back. Way, way back. See more at size?
A reader sent in this Merckx Mondays photo, straight from the Colnago Twitter account with the caption: “44 years ago Eddy Merckx beat the Hour record. Ernesto Colnago was at his side!” Look at that New Bike Day face on Merckx! You can read all about this bike from Merckx Mondays number 40 where we look in depth at this very Hour Record bike.
How many ‘Nagos are hanging out in the rafters at River City?
I would like you to close your eyes for a brief moment and imagine yourself sitting at home on a beautiful Summer evening and… oh wait, you can’t really read this with your eyes closed now can you. Let’s try this again. So, now that I have already wasted this much of your time, maybe just imagine (with your eyes open this time) that you get a call from someone asking if you would like to visit the Tour de France and ride your bike for a few weeks with “American Cyclocross Legend Tim Johnson” (he prefers to be called that to just plain old “Tim”.) Now imagine that while chasing the TdF you will also be traveling through the French countryside in a fully restored vintage Mavic Service Course Vehicle from 1974. Now please imagine that you have never been to the Tour de France but you have dreamed about it for years and now someone is offering you a Willy Wonka sized golden ticket in the form of an all expense paid trip. Mavic asked us to fly into France around the 8th Stage and create some videos for social media purposes. The goal was to ride with Go Pro Cameras and capture the energy of the tour to make 4-5 videos in a little over a week. That meant we would need a real life video editor, so I made a call to my buddy Ace Carretero and the trifecta was complete!
Molteni Orange wasn’t just for Eddy! Colnago originated this iconic color for the sausage-sponsored team. Leave it to River City to own such a prime specimen!
Coming in at video number fifteen, this Colnago Carbon Volo is an early example of carbon fiber construction from the Italian company. This particular model was built at Colnago’s factory in conjunction with Ferrari in 1988 and was later replaced by the model C35 in 1989. Check out some photos and more information at River City Bicycles.
River City returns with their Bike Collection series and a flashy ‘Nago C40 with a Cinelli Grammo Art Stem. Those ti beauts will never get old!
While this video is a little long, it showcases some of our local riding here in Los Angeles, as well as a squeaky clean ‘Nago.
… and here we are again, watching Italian men made beautiful Colnago C60 frames!
The Radavist features a lot of frame builders, but few are as world-renown as Colnago and yes, they still make frames, by hand in Italy.
The late 80’s and early 90’s saw a lot of serious shred sleds, many of which have become icons in the vintage MTB world. This is one of those icons, the early 90’s Colnago Master. These bikes were the epitome of Italian design and fabrication, notoriously behind the times when it came to tech – hence the chainstay mounted rear u-brake, but made with the same precision as their road-equivalence.
Using Columbus Gilco tubing and an arabesque seat tube cluster, the Masters are still some of the most iconic MTBs, over 20 years later.
The owner, Ray bought it off eBay, as is – sans the Campy QR, grips, pedals and computer. It’s immaculate and the details are just so wild, right down to the Shimano XT drivetrain, which is arguably better than the Italian counterpart… When I saw it atop of his caravan at the ATOC, I politely asked if I could photograph it.
I don’t know about where you live, but it’s rainy here in Austin and that means it’s the perfect day to watch videos. Like this one from Inside Line, showcasing Colnago.
Thanks for sharing this video Sam!
I swear, when I’m in Melbourne, it’s like classic steel roadie overload. Normally, I’m content with my modern steel but after a day at Shifter Bikes, I’m ready to start piecing together an Italian race machine. Dan has so many amazing builds coming out of his shop at the moment, but my favorite is this Colnago Decor with Campagnolo Record. Why? See for yourself in the Gallery!
There are a lot of so-called “restoration experts” when it comes to bicycles, but as far as I’m concerned, there’s only one. Andy from FYXO teamed up with Busyman and Shifter to bring you one of the best Colnago Mexico restorations out there. Head over to FYXO to see the full scoop and make sure there’s extra salt.

Although this bike is still a work in progress, I told Keirnan that I still wanted to post it. Rides like this are teetering on the verge of perfection and it’s not every day that you see such a stunning bicycle, built up with Campagnolo Corsa Record Pista. Wow.
On a side note, thanks for all the readers who are contributing this week. I’ve seen some gorgeous bikes!

I’ve been wanting to take more street-style bike photographs as of late and since Ian’s such a handsome fella’, I figured I’d start it off with him. Oh, his work bike ain’t too bad either.
