A First Look at Sim Works’ New Doppo Locust Touring Bike and SimLoaders Bags

We got our first look at the made in Portland, Oregon Sim Works SimLoaders bags during our Chris King Open House Reportage this year and today, the Japanese brand announced the full lineup, coinciding with a completely redesigned Doppo touring bike, now dubbed the Locust and with either 27.5×2.8″ or 29×2.4″ tire clearance!

We first showcased the Doppo when John did a bike tour around Mt. Fuji with the Circles crew back in 2016, so it’s exciting to see the newest permutation of this line. Read on for a complete look at the SimLoaders Bags and the new Doppo Locust below!

‘Voyageur’ Handlebar bag $248 USD

SimWorks’ new mid-capacity modern handlebar mounted carrier for cyclists packing modestly for a long-day adventure, or a light overnighter. An expandable bag flap offers additional coverage and capacity for riders looking to push the volume limits of the bag, while daisy chains on the top and underside of the bag offer the ability to supplement the overall carrying capacity. Constructed of EcoPak exterior material, the bag is lined with nylon for weather resistance.

Side accessory pockets with buckle secured covers isolate some compact essentials for quick at hand access. A removable HDPE board insert helps the bag keep it’s bottom shape, while the lining closes via a cinch-top. A midline compression strap helps to draw the front of the bag toward the handlebar mount- which is fiberglass rod reinforced and double stitched. Included are a cinch cord to secure the rear daisy chain to your bikes head tube/stack, as well as (2x) 6″ Voile Straps for handlebar attachment.

‘Chrysalis’ Saddle Bag $160 USD

Striking a sweet spot between our En-Route compact saddle bag, and long-haul loaders you might find from other manufacturers is our ‘Chrysalis’ saddle bag. While offering enough space to pack some layers or even a lightweight bivy or sleeping quilt- the bag’s modest size serves as a worthy supplement to a frame bag, handlebar bag, or fork mounted cargo carrying solution while minimizing that jutting tail from hanging out behind your saddle.

Constructed from the same EcoPak as the other bags in our Sim Loader line, the ‘Chrysalis’ pack utilizes a roll-style buckle closure and a separate buckle and strap system to secure the pack to your saddle. The attachment point at your seat post is achieved through opposing micro D-rings to anchor an included 6″ Voile strap. Neoprene against your seatpost and saddle rails, and a waterproof nylon liner round out durability and range of environmental considerations. A reflective band on the top and underside of the bag provides a dose of safety for riders out after dark.

‘Vagabond’ Frame Bag $165 USD

Built to size for our Doppo line of bikes- the Vagabond full frame bags are an excellent and tailored way to expand the range of your Doppo. A drive side compartment affords the full size of the bag for storing slim items that you might want to carry on a bikepacking trip or extended outing. For day rides, this could potentially eliminate altogether the need for a handlebar or saddle bag. For bikepackers- occupying your bike’s main front triangle with cargo can help in distributing and equalizing weight. A full-wrap daisy chain on the outer perimeter of the bag allows you to tailor positioning of included soft-sided velcro straps to dial in fit and avoid braze-ons. Cut and sewn to perfectly fit and complement our Doppo line of frames- the Vagabond bag is a worthy upgrade that will open up a ton of possibilities for how you carry gear on your rides.

‘Extra Rice & Beans’ Bag $120 USD

A compact roll-top carrier seamlessly pairs with our minimalist Burrito Rack. Premium hardware by German outfit Fidlock for the magnetic closure at the roll-top as well as the cinch-lock for quick access. A reinforced padded base and lower walls will protect your cargo during mixed-terrain rides on your local double-track; and a purpose built webbing attachment system with cordlock toggles will secure the bag to Burrito rack’s corner anchor points. Dual daisy chains would allow for this bag to be secured to another rack. Reflective chevron sewn to the back of the bag adds a subtle touch of safety.Nylon D-rings sewn to either side make adding a shoulder strap a cinch, and boosts the bag’s ability to be adapted as a capable carry-all off the bike.
Load it up with a grip of burritos and refreshments for you and a couple buds and head out to your favorite hilltop clearing or beach break to unwind. Leave the backpack at home.

The All-New Doppo Locust Touring Bike $1,880

Admiring the resiliency of the locust (derived from the Latin locusta, meaning grasshopper), Sim Works took inspiration from these grasshoppers and their resiliency to the elements and the landscapes they occupy for the new permutation of the Doppo touring bike.

Most of a locust’s life is spent in solitude, yet at a specific phase in its life cycle; it will swarm en masse, traveling across open landscapes in search of food, but only after abundant rainfall when vegetative growth is abundant. While they are often depicted as villainous and gregarious insects, they are keystones in a healthy ecological system. Like the natural cycle of all things, locusts play an important role in arid steppe landscapes: controlling fire fuel!

Locusts are incredibly resilient in all terrains, making them a beautiful and misunderstood inspiration for the next stage of the Doppo, sometimes solitary, sometimes with friends.

The Doppo Locust is the first Doppo designed around a 120 mm travel suspension fork with a suspension-corrected segmented fork.
