The 2022 TransRockies Gravel Royale

Reportage

The 2022 TransRockies Gravel Royale

TransRockies has become an institution in the stage racing world: they have been around since the beginning. In late August, the inaugural Gravel Royale was their first foray into the world of gravel racing. The edition of the truly off-tarmac event makes sense, as the main critique of TransRockies in years past has been riders complaining about too many gravel roads. Sounds like they’ve just been honing the course for a real gravel throw down! After the four stages, Rob Britton of Victoria, BA and Rach McBride of Vancouver, BC took the top step in the Elite Men’s and Women’s categories, respectively. What follows is Barry Wicks‘ rider journal from each of the four days which gives a stream of consciousness account, followed by his interviews with other competitors. Each interview maintained the same format and consisted of just three questions designed to skip the small talk: What is your favorite color? What are you reading right now? What is the meaning of life? Enjoy the ride!

100 Copies: 8 Cyclists Print

The latest from 100 Copies is a little different than their previous designs:

Taking inspiration from the Bauhaus style graphic design, this artwork combines geometric shapes, balanced forms and bold blocks of colour, to create an abstract depiction of 8 cyclists passing one another on the road. Can you spot them all?

The iconic Bauhaus art movement has impacted our ordinary lives in extraordinary ways. Its reach in the modern society is everywhere: From skyscrapers to household objects and even the humble bicycle. It brought art into everyday life and shaped the way we live today. Cycling, too, can be both an everyday affair and an art form.

Premier Bicycle Werks Painted Jordan’s OPEN U.P. RTP All Road

The way I ride road bikes has evolved with the way the bikes are being built. As I have moved away from pack racing over the past 10 years, I have desired more variety in my daily rides. Most of my rides involve sections of steep LA county fire roads or linking hilly neighborhood climbs together by zigging and zagging through hidden dirt paths.

Garrett Chow on the Argonaut Mavic 125ans Road Bike

Garrett Chow is an exceptional designer and I’m very fond of his work. In today’s industry, so many cycling-related projects rely on paint design, meaning it’s the ultimate crux in a project’s success.

It’s easy to draw some chevrons, or paint a logo a pantone and call it a day, but to really dive into data, something that’s typically not visually stimulating and pull a compelling paint job from a series of numbers and historical markers takes talent.

With the recent Mavic 125ans project bikes, I took a liking to Argonaut‘s design. There was information there and it required you to stop and really examine every aspect of the bike. There were a lot of immaculate paint jobs in the 125ans bikes, but this one was more than that…

PTBOrides & Jackson Creek Press: Five on Fifty

I like this for many reasons and one of which is how they chose obscure, Canadian cycling legends.

“Ptborides.com teamed up with our good friends at Jacksoncreekpress.ca to bring you a limited edition print featuring the names of our 5 favourite Canadian cyclists.

In 2010, Jeff at Jackson Creek Press had made a series of three prints; Limited edition runs featuring the names of 5 Canadian graphic designers, 5 Canadian authors, and 5 Canadian musicians. When we launched ptborides.com it seemed automatic we should make a cycling themed print. Since Jeff is into riding bicycles, he was eager to make it happen as well.

Last week, on a cold Canadian evening, three of us met up in the Jackson Creek Letterpress shop. With frozen toes and toques and parka’s worn in earnest. We set type, thawed ink, listened to the CBC, talked about Greg Curnoe and Mariposa bicycles and cranked out — literally, by hand — 50 prints.

We did so on a 1940′s Proofing Press using wood and lead type, handset in the bed of the press. The print features two colours, Pantone Warm Red, and a Custom Grey. I am biased, to be sure, but these prints look very nice. We couldn’t be happier with the end result.

Of course, with a project like this, the first problem you run into is thinking about all the names not included in our list . . . There is no way around that. However, in case you missed it, Kieran wrote some words about why these names are important to him.”

Affinity Cycles for RLX

Affinity Cycles for RLX

RLX is Ralph Lauren‘s sportswear line. Athletic wear that is clean and simple. Aesthetics in fashion mean everything and when the design team at RLX had the opportunity to approach a cycling company to build bikes for their showroom, they went to the same shop that supplied many of their own bicycles, Affinity Cycles. Shown here is one of two RLX Concept bikes, a Kissena track. Only for display purposes, this bike uses the pantones of the RLX clothing and speaks the same language as the RLX sportswear.

Below is the Affinity Low-Pro, dressed in olive, neon yellow and brown.
