My OD OG1 Speedvagen Road with SRAM Rival

Reportage

My OD OG1 Speedvagen Road with SRAM Rival

Ever since first reviewing the All-City Mr. Pink and then the lavender Speedvagen OG1, I really wanted a steel road bike again. After some finagling, I managed to buy an OG1 frameset, along with a few painted-to-match parts from the Vanilla Workshop. Now, since the OG1 is a ready-made, off-the-shelf geometry, it’s not as pricey as the other Speedvagen frames. I also didn’t feel the need to go custom for this frameset, since the OG1’s stock geometry fit me pretty well. All I needed was a spacer under the stem to get the same reach and extension as my Argonaut road bike.

For me, a road bike is the simplest tool in my quiver. There are no rack mounts, no disc brakes, it’s just a straight-forward road machine.

Since reviewing the Speedvagen OG1, I really wanted to own one, but as a frame. As of now, if you recall, the OG1 only comes as a complete. Yet after a few emails, I was able to finagle one out of the Vanilla Workshop and two weeks later, it arrived. Not sure if this will be something Vanilla offers in the future, yet their comment on Instagram leads me to believe it might be an option in 2017. Or you could holler at them and beg like I did.

The guys at Golden Saddle will be building this up in the next week, with SRAM Rival and some Chris King special bits…

Speedvagen’s 2016 Surprise Me! Road

Each year, Speedvagen offers up a Surprise Me! option for their road and ‘cross bikes. This year’s models feature bright gradients and polka dots, building over previous year’s designs, with three color palette options. When you order a Speedvagen, you can choose your paint, or you can tell them, Surprise Me! Head over to Speedvagen for more information.

On a Steel Horse I Ride: the Speedvagen OG1 Road Bike

The Vanilla Workshop has multiple tiers in terms of frameset design and production. At the highest tier is a Vanilla. These are 100% custom, lugged beauties made entirely by Sacha White. Their wait list is so long, it’s not even worth mentioning. Then on the more readily-available tier is a Speedvagen frameset. These used to be only available as a 100% custom geometry with multiple options from paint, ranging from a simple, single color with detail hits to complex, “Surprise Me” paint jobs that are so wild, they’ve inspired how other builders tackle paint design.

Now, Speedvagen has a third option in its pricing catalog: the OG1 road frameset. These are stock frames, already painted and in stock now, ready to ship to you in days or weeks, not months. The OG1 also carries a pricetag that won’t make you choke on your morning breakfast, when it comes to a made in the USA frame anyway.

The OG1 is still made 100% by hand in the Vanilla Workshop and it’s painted in house with a custom Speedvagen design, usually two per year with the first year’s designs being limited to a matte lavender or a burly-looking matte olive drab! It’s obvious which color you’re seeing here.

These frames are a deal, but there’s a catch…

Jeff Curtes’ Team MAAP Speedvagen Disc ‘Cross

Jeff Curtes’ Team MAAP Speedvagen Disc ‘Cross

Our buddy Jeff Curtes is an exceptional photographer and part of the Speedvagen family. Living in Sydney means ‘cross season is here and this season he’s racing for MAAP, an Australian apparel company. When Jeff told me about his new team bike, I requested some photos. It sounded like an awesome build with Di2, a race geometry and no bottle bosses. Yeah…

I can’t even begin to paraphrase Jeff’s words, so check them out below, along with more photos!

Speedvagen Launches their Ready-Made Program with the OG-1 Road Machine

What if I told you that you can ride a Speedvagen, completely built with Shimano components, for $5,385? Oh and it’ll be ready to ride in 1-2 weeks. Today Speedvagen announces their Ready-Made Program with the OG-1 road machine. I’ve been riding one for a few weeks now and it’s a total blast. There’s a full review coming shortly, but for now, check out Speedvagen’s press release below, complete with a full component break-down and tons of detail photos…

Fuck Yeah Olive Drab Speedvagen ‘Cross

Reportage

Fuck Yeah Olive Drab Speedvagen ‘Cross

Fuck yeah olive drab! I love OD green bikes. In fact, I love anything OD green. There’s something so utilitarian about it. Take something completely ordinary and then paint it OD for it to be even more bad-ass. Even a Speedvagen. Not that Speedvagens aren’t already made from bad-assery, but the paint doesn’t hurt.

This one came waltzing in Golden Saddle Cyclery a few weeks ago, begging to be photographed. Seemed the current owner bought it from someone who maybe rode it two or three times. It’s immaculate and thankfully, now it’s being ridden a lot on Los Angeles’ fine dirt roads and trails.

There’s something so timeless about canti brakes on a ‘cross bike, especially with that seat mast-puncturing cable!
