Shovel Research WRT Cable Hanger

Portland’s Shovel Research just launched these nifty WRT Cable Hangers ($69), inspired by a 1930’s constructeur, Louis Villemus, and the Le Lewis brand’s design that pre-dates both Alex Singer and Rene Herse’s models. The 6061-T6 pulley and hanger body is machined in Portland, Oregon, and anodized locally.

The pulley design will center itself after wheel replacement, but the option exists to immobilize the pulley with any 0.040 M5 washer – a pair of brass ones is free with purchase upon request; just put it in the order notes when ordering direct from Shovel Research.

Sold as a pair. Comes with a 2.5mm hex key and hardened stainless set screws with thread locker pre-applied.

Does it get much better than small makers addressing niche demands within a niche sector of the bike industry? I don’t think so. One of my favorite parts about running this website is showcasing and highlighting cottage industry bike businesses. Shovel Research is a small machine and fabrication shop that makes well-designed products that address a niche demand. One of which is its Rod Steward, a bag support designed for the Fab’s Chest by Ron’s Bikes, but as I found out on my Rivendell Bombadil, it works well with a Rivendell Sackville BagBoy bag.

Let’s check out a quick review below…

A FoCo Collabo: Josh’s Bender 29+ Touring MTB with Oddity Squid Fork

Will Bender is a bicycle frame builder based in Fort Collins, CO. His custom frames run the gamut from all-road to gravel, touring, and modern hardtails. Last summer, Josh paid Will a visit to document his shop and learn about his background and approach to building bikes. While he was there, he enlisted Will to build the touring MTB of his dreams — a comfortable 29+ rig capable of carrying heavy loads and designed to harmonize with the Oddity Squid Fork made concurrently by another Fort Collins frame builder, Sean Burns.
