Thick MTB Grip Review Roundup
This is a good time for thick grips. There are more options than ever for anyone seeking a little extra surface area. Travis is a bit of an expert on the subject, and never travels without a set of grips 33 mm or larger in case he needs to borrow a bike. So, he’s gathered a baker’s dozen and gave them a squeeze.

Ergon’s SMC Core Saddles
For those looking for the ultimate in comfort, the Ergon SMC Core saddles ($159.95) are unlike anything we’ve ridden before. Based on the popularity and success of the SMC saddle series comes additional models featuring Ergon’s Core and TwinShell technology. What makes these saddles so unique is the patented CORE 3D® design. As your hips rock with each pedal stroke, the saddle moves side to side, following pelvic movements. This reduces pressure on the sit bones. The sensation is particularly noticeable if you don’t wear padded shorts.

Sklar Sweet Spot Review: Josh’s Mash-Up Sweet Jammer
The Sweet Spot from Bozeman, MT-based Sklar Bikes is a steel hardtail mountain bike designed to be a venerable quiver-killer. Built around 150mm of front suspension, with clearance for up to 29 x 2.8 tires, its geometry embraces builder Adam Sklar’s mantra of “fast is fun, but fun is fun-er.” Sweet Spots were Adam’s first foray into offering a small batch frame design and sizing, which he hopes will make his bikes more accessible and faster to produce.
I picked up a Sweet Spot of my own earlier this spring after many years of searching for the perfect hardtail. Due to a few requests I had to make it even sweeter, it turned into a custom project that retained the established Sweet Spot geometry and material selection. Below, let’s take a closer look at my build in addition to a brief interview with Adam about these bikes and his design/build process!

Ergon’s New Gravity and Downhill-Inspired GD1 Evo MTB Grips
We’ve sung Ergon’s praises before and a recent announcement should pique the interest of DH and gravity riders. The new GD1 MTB grip offers ergonomics and comfort, fine-tuned for the rigors of racing flat-out down the most rugged trails. The GD1 Evo features more damping, better control, and enhanced comfort, resulting in less gripping power due to its conical shape, super soft thumb zone, and new inner stop design. In addition, the factory version features a unique rubber compound exclusively made in Germany for an even more precise grip feel. The GD1 Evo is twist-proof on carbon handlebars and available in two diameters.

Ergon’s 2020 GE1 Grip Range Features New Colors
If you look at all my mountain bikes, you’ll note they all share one thing in common: the grips! A few years back, I got hit by a car and broke my pinky. It took months of PT to get my grip back to where I could feel comfortable on a mountain bike again. Yet, one thing I noticed was severe pain while on long descents. I tried everything but then a friend turned me on to the GE1 grips from Ergon and I never experienced pain again. Now, I’m not a physical therapist or a bike fit specialist, but the team at Ergon have designed the best grips I’ve ever used and they fixed my hand pain.
New for 2020 are my favorite grips, back in a few new colors. Take these olive drab and desert tan grips. It’s like they made them especially for us! The new 2020 designs from Ergon are shipping now, so holler at your shop to order you a pair if you too are a fan.
