Bikes, Products, and People from Sea Otter Classic 2023: Part One

Sea Otter Classic is one of the largest annual cycling festivals in the world. Each April since 1991, cyclists of all persuasions have descended on Laguna Seca Raceway outside of Monterey, CA to cheer on professional and amateur racers, as well as check out the latest and greatest in cycling technology at the massive vendor expo.

And this year, that tech happened to be especially late and great, and there was more to talk about than usual. Maybe it’s because there were more exhibitors in attendance than normal. Maybe it’s the easing of strains on the supply chain. Whatever it was, Josh Weinberg and Travis Engel were on the ground all weekend and, over the next few days, will be sharing their findings and observations from the massive event. So, let’s get into it below!

A Look at Paul Component Engineering’s New Sprinter Van Wrap by Chris McNally

Paul Component Engineering has a lifelong legacy of making parts you can rely on, for just about any bike. This legacy is only possible due to the fact that the team at Paul live, eat, dream, drink, sleep, and travel for all things bike! Part of their tradeshow and bike race fleet is this Sprinter van, which recently got a facelift thanks to Chris McNally. Let’s take a look at this van’s new vinyl wrap in detail below.

For brands, launching a new or a newly-designed bike is an exciting day, with various outlets talking about the model all at once and social media fluttering with anticipation. For viewers, it can be overwhelming for sure, but for me, when it comes to Ibis’ new launches, I always get stoked to see what watercolor artist Chris McNally comes up to coincide with these launches. Here’s the new Ripley, illustrated in watercolor and ink, on Mount Lemmon in Tucson, Arizona. Head over to Chris’ Instagram for more of his kick-ass work and to Ibis to see the new Ripley in the flesh.

Recently, Blackburn has been premiering their Roll With It film in various places around the country. To coincide with this premiere, artist Chris McNally submitted his watercolor sketchbook from the trip for us to share here on the Radavist. These are the sketches he made while on the bicycle tour through the deep, deep south. Enjoy!

If you’d like to read Brian Vernor’s trip report, make sure you check that out too!

Chris McNally for Spurcycle… BOTTLES!

San Francisco has something for every cyclist. If you’re into road riding, there’s plenty to fill the afternoon with hairpin turns that bank into the fog. Or if gettin’ dirty is more your liking, the ribbons of brown pow await.

Chris McNally has illustrated the “skinny” and the “dirty” in two bottles for Spurcycle. In stock now and ready to ship!

Merckx Mondays

Artist Chris McNally, like many of us have a long withstanding love for Eddy Merckx, his legacy and his bicycles. Maybe not his modern machines, but rather the years of classic racing. Specically, Faema and Molteni.

As part of a giant undertaking, Chris is working on a new watercolor painting project: a bike shop of life experiences both fiction and non-fiction. Inside this gem of a idea will be bikes he’s owned and bikes he’s yet to own. Case in point: a Molteni Merckx…

There’s more to come from this unique undertaking, but for now let’s just appreciate the detail he put into this classic race steed.

The Vanilla Bicycles x Chris McNally Collection

I love seeing projects like this form. Especially when it’s got Chris McNally involved. That man is so talented. Here’s the scoop from Vanilla:

“Born out of a friendship and shared love of impractical vehicles and the clean aesthetic of 60’s and 70’s road racing, this project represents the culmination of seeds planted a few years ago. When Sacha started in on a design for the new Vanilla kit, he was reminded of how garish modern team gear has become. Thinking about what the design could be, he wanted to evoke the beauty and simplicity of past designs, while keeping the forward-looking feel the Workshop believes in…”

The Athletic: Brian Vernor and Chris McNally Cyclocross Shirts

Man, I feel like this collaboration has been in the works for ages. Two of my favorite artists, working together for one rad brand, the Athletic.

“Brian Vernor and Chris McNally teamed up to make these fantastic t-shirts. This isn’t the first time that these two have teamed up together, but it is something that they have been talking about for a while.

Aaron Bradford and Vernor set out to make this one at Wilder Ranch in Santa Cruz. Just as Brian and McNally did with their other shirt at Townsley Tunnel.

These are the spaces we ride all year round on cross bikes. In the North Cal. it is always cyclocross season, the terrain dictates it.”
