“Le Petite Cannibal”

I have a ton of Merckx Mondays content coming from Australia over these next few weeks but today I’ve got one piece of radness to share. This year, all my friends seem to be having kids and it’s no secret that FYXO‘s a daddy now. Hence the mini Molteni Baby Skinsuit.

$40 and guaranteed to make your offspring faster. Or something. Made to order, bespoke baby wear and ends this week, so get on it. This is one example when it’s acceptable to buy upgrades…

“FILM Shot & Directed by Kristian Ansand & Martin Gilluck | Music by A Dancing Beggar | Produced by ERTZUI FILM ertzui.de

The Rapha Continental was established in the United States in 2007 with the aim of rediscovering the lost spirit of cycling. To help realise that ambition, the Rapha Continental joined forces with the finest independent framebuilders in America. In recognition of the Continental’s continued expansion in 2013, Rapha is now proud to be working with some of the finest independent framebuilders around the world.

The result is a growing collection of custom bikes that reflect the craft and heritage of global framebuilding, bikes that are versatile enough to handle the wide range of terrain that the Continental riders encounter. Meticulously designed and entirely handbuilt, they combine technology and innovation with individuality and flair, creating elegant, understated bikes that handle beautifully and perform brilliantly.”

As the Rapha Continental continues to grow, Rapha will be working with some of the best bespoke framebuilders in each Continental territory. In 2013, these will include:

Pedalers’ Fair in Seattle

Ryan from Go Means Go has been working hard on the forthcoming Pedalers’ Fair in Seattle:

“Go Means Go is working with Swift Industries and Babecycle on this project in order to shine some light on the talented makers and artisans that live and work in Washington State.  We focused on soft goods for the most part, with 20 vendors attending.  A broad range of goods including custom wool bespoke cycling clothing, leather goods for cycling, caps, bags, panniers and even furniture, we’ve also invited a few custom framebuilders.  ”

Big x Top Preview

Jordan from Big x Top emailed me yesterday to tell me about a new venture he’s working on. It’s called Big x Top and he’ll be working on developing straps, a line of bags, and bespoke bags for all. He’s planning on leaning more towards function over form and here’s a preview video by Pixel Mason showcasing him at work.

14 Bike Co is Moving

I’ve heard about this happening for a little while now and I can’t say that I’m opposed. Check out the latest from 14 Bike Co:

“Yes, 14bikeco is moving out of the Truman Brewery! For the moment we are going to be concentrating on wholesale and online with a new premises coming soon. The decision to move came about through the fact that there are a load of projects that we’ve got going on that we really want to put our full attention to, without having the day-to-day demands of running a bike shop slowing things down.

From the beginning our focus was to make beautiful handbuilt English bicycles, utilizing the skills honed in the history of English manufacturing to create bespoke bicycles to last a lifetime, and although it’s been amazing to have the shop up for so long it’s time for us to move on and concentrate on developing more of our own products and designs.

14bikeco wants to say a huge thank you to all of our shop customers and of course everyone at the Truman brewery
for all the help and support they’ve given us over the last 2 years!”

Makes perfect sense. Running wrenches and dealing with flat fixes will suck all the time from your day and a lot of the time, hiring more people isn’t feasible with rising overhead. I’m glad to see 14 Bike Co is shifting their paradigm.

SPIN by Ben Roberts

I just caught this bike portrait project over on the 14 Bike Co blog. SPIN is a new project by Ben Roberts:

“Over the last few years, fixed gear bike culture has embedded itself on the streets of London.

A collaboration in progress with designer Christian Thümer at Signal | Noise, SPIN meets some of London’s unique fixed gear bikes in their own habitats.

Watch out for future developments, including bespoke illustrations and a planned book.”

Kinfolk: International Bike

Tracko had the scoop on Kinfolk‘s new project with Coat, Brooks and Kara Ginther. He also had a much nicer image than the original Wallpaper* article. That being said, here’s the PR from Wallpaper*:

Despite the perils of potholes and truckers’ blind spots, team Wallpaper* are committed urban cyclists. So committed that we commissioned a bike that could be broken down, packed in a bespoke bag and loaded on a plane, with no excess baggage charge, and taken with us wherever we went. The project pulled in a wide range of craftsmen collaborators from the US, UK and Japan — frame builders, designers, paint specialists, saddle makers, leather carvers and bag and luggage makers — to ensure that every element of the bike was as beautifully put together as it could be.

Not a bad looking project. I’d build it up proper, that’s for sure.

Brick Lane Bikes: New Prototype Trick Frame

I know the image looks small, but if you click on it, it’ll open up to a higher res. Brick Lane Bikes have a new trick frame out. Departing from their 4130 tubeset, the crew decided to go with Columbus Zona. Here’s what they’ve got to say about it:

Fresh new BLB prototype Trick frame. Testing in progress!!

Hand built from Columbus Zona tubing. Strong & tough. It will fit 55c tyres & is perfect for the super wide Velocity P35.

Bespoke gusset is strong & stealthy yet super mean. More info coming soon….

Sounds promising!

Frame of Mind: Of Steel

Some of you may have caught this at Tracko yesterday, so excuse the re-post. In all honesty, I didn’t watch it until just now and man, it’s really worth it. The video, shot by Ben Ingham’s, focuses on Dario Pegoretti. Entitled “Of Steel” it peers into the creative genius of Pegoretti and is the perfect segue for the opening of Bespoke on May 11th in NYC. Watch the trailer right here!
