This just in from the wire. Jon Ander Ortuondo from Spain took first at the Red Hook Crit Milano. Congrats Jon! Damn, look at all that Brooklyn in the top 5. Nicely done fellas! Congrats to everyone. Photos will begin to surface shortly.

Now that the new Urban Velo is out, Ed Glazar can post some of his unused photos from this year’s Red Hook Crit. For the entire evening, Ed was set up at the one chicane on the course. A sketchy s-turn that could easily have led to more crashes than ended up happening through the evening. Head on over to Ed’s blog to see the rest of the photos.

The NY Post actually did a pretty good job on this story. Big ups to Jeff from Continuum for talking to the media about track bikes in a great light. Also, much respect to Dave for throwing this, the racers for enduring the course and all the spectators for coming along to watch!

Such a rad photo! Lucas Brunelle was at the Red Hook Crit last night following the lead pack as they tore through the cobbles in a 20-lap unsanctioned track bike-only race. Ed Glazar caught him tailing Al, who placed 3rd in the crit. The media presence last night was crazy. Multiple photographers and camera crews were present, making it hard for the local bike photographers to get in on the action. I know Ed was trying to get a few at this turn and I’m sure he’s happy with the final product.

Last night’s Red Hook Crit was a huge success. In its third year, the unsanctioned bicycle race had a huge turn out of racers and spectators. The competition was fierce with Dan Chabanov taking first place, John Ktel in second and Al taking third. A few spills and many flats kept the 20-lap criterium interesting and the after party was bumping till the wee hours of the morning. Tak was there shooting photos, which are now up on New York Bike Dreams. I’m sure others will surface, including mine, so I’ll post them later on.

Big ups to Dave Trimble, the Bicycle Film Festival and other sponsors for making this happen!

The unsanctioned race has been getting a lot of publicity over the past few years and Velonews.com has a great article up on their site documenting the history of Dave’s successful event. Mark your calenders for the 2010 Red Hook Criterium. The event’s date is set for March 20th at 11pm. Coincidentally, Ed Glazar shot this photo of Gabe Allen at the 2009 Red Hook Criterium. After Gabe‘s accident in SF, he’s finally back on the East Coast and is in the process of rehabilitation. Maybe we’ll see Gabe at the event?

Michael Green at Bike Blog NYC posted a video short from Fusco Industries showcasing Dave Trimble’s Red Hook Criterium from last night. I have to say, I was impressed with the crowd that showed up and even more impressed with K-Tel’s 3rd place win. Joan’s a normal guy, not a road racer or a track racer. He just trains and it shows.

The 2009 Red Hook Criterium is an unsanctioned race through a desolate post-industrial part of Brooklyn. Brakeless track bikes are mandatory for riders. The field will be a mix of semi-professional cyclists, bike messengers, and urban cyclists. The race consists of 16 three quarter-mile laps featuring several hairpin turns, a fast sprint through the parking lot of a chain retailer, a cobblestone stretch, and a sprint finish. Start time for the race is 11pm on Saturday night, and assuming a 2-minute lap time, will last roughly a half-hour. Bus and automobile traffic on the course, even if kept to a minimum, is a near-certainty.

The first person to cross the finish line at the completion of 16 laps will take home $300. The second place finisher will receive a $150 prize, and the third place finisher will pocket $50. Additionally, the first rider to complete the first and eighth laps will receive a prime, or prize, to be announced on race day.

Immediately following the race will be a house party where the podium presentation and distribution of prizes will take place.

On Saturday, March 28 the 2009, the Red Hook Criterium will take place and will be be filmed as a competitive sporting event. The film will be produced by Kalim Armstrong (Orange Bikes Take Manhattan, Messenger) and John Hoppin, with assistance from Daniel Leeb (Cinecycle). The race organizer is David August Trimble, and the race director is Al Barouh.

Multiple HD cameras will be set up to film the race. At least one helmet cam will follow race action firsthand. Additionally, a surprise helmet cam shooter may be in town to cover the race. We will have a camera at the podium presentation immediately following the race. Live race commentary and analysis will be provided by John Hoppin and Michael Green (bikeblog NYC).

This project is made possible by the Bicycle Film Festival family, a festival showcaseing films featuring the bicycle in 39 cities annually. The Melbourne-based Hunter Bros Cycling team takes on the world’s first track bike criterium; the Red Hook Crit Brooklyn.

Jon Takao, the footwear designer at Specialized looked to the royal family to inspire the latest Red Hook Crit track bike. This black and gold bike is an homage to the Crown Jewels, the gates of Buckingham, a deck of cards and believe it or not, Alice in Wonderland. Check out the BTS video above and a few photos below.
