Anytime there’s an Edward Abbey reference in the cycling industry, my interest is piqued! Back when Advocate Cycles was around, their Hayduke MTB frame offered up a modern hardtail geometry in steel or titanium, at a more affordable price. When Advocate closed shop, the owners began to work on Esker Cycles, which launched earlier this summer. Now, the Hayduke hardtail is back with new features, new geometry, and the same desert vigilante spirit as its namesake. Get out to the desert with your own Monkey Wrench Gang and see more at Esker Cycles.

Esker Cycles’ New 150mm Travel 27.5 Elkat Mountain Bike
Your next full suspension doesn’t have to come from one of the big brands. Esker Cycles are a new company, looking to put riders first with their new Elkat model, a 150mm travel, 27.5-platform frame, featuring Orion suspension design. I got to see the Elkat in person while in Bozeman and was impressed by the bike in its entirety. I don’t want to spill the beans too much because you should really head to Esker’s website to read about the company and the bike. Check out a few more photos below.

Otso Cycles Hoot Ti Review: Titanium Hardtail Gets the Last Laugh
Launching today, the Hoot Ti from Otso Cycles is the brand’s first foray into designing a truly modern and progressive hardtail mountain bike. Built around 140 mm of front suspension with short 425mm chainstays across all sizes, the Hoot is meant for demanding trail riding yet is playful enough for riders who like to get airborne. It’s an evolution of where the brand, which has been innovating since day one, is going while also showcasing its ability to deploy new technologies to solve challenging design problems.
Josh has put considerable mileage on the new Hoot over the past few weeks, both in his usual testing grounds of southern Arizona and a big week in the steep mountains of northern New Mexico. Continue reading below for Josh’s review of the Hoot and a peek inside Otso’s Minneapolis, MN-based operations.

Falconer Cycles Now Offers Titanium Frames: A Look at Cameron’s Hardtail Touring Bike and Rack
Falconer Cycles is now making titanium frames and last weekend, he unveiled a stunning titanium hardtail touring bike to John…
For creatives – be it sculptors or painters – expanding into other mediums is often fulfilling and cathartic. Learning new methodologies and processes keeps makers engaged with their work. Lots of bicycle fabricators start out TIG welding steel frames and, later, expand into working with titanium. This offers new horizons for not only the brand but also for loyal followers to access a superior material.
Cameron Falconer is the latest builder to be documented here expanding into titanium from steel. While in Southern Arizona last weekend, John caught up with Cam who showcased a titanium hardtail touring bike with a custom titanium rack. This was “John’s modern bike shoot of the year” as he put it excitedly and you can see why below…

Dancing with Titanium: An Esker Japhy Ti 29er Hardtail Review
As far as production hardtails are concerned, the Esker Japhy is one of the most excellent all-rounder options out there. Truthfully, I had very little to critique with the steel Japhy, and so I was elated when they reached out asking if I’d like to throw my leg over a new titanium Japhy. The Esker Japhy Review: One Scrappy 29er Hardtail
When one thinks of Esker Cycles, the Hayduke 27.5+ hardtail (reviewed here by Locke Hassett) quickly comes to mind – and in many ways, the Hayduke served as the launchpad for the design of Esker’s latest model, the Japhy.
While the Japhy looks like considerably “less bike” than the 140mm Hayduke with its 120mm fork and 29″ wheels, don’t count it out yet: the Japhy is scrappy and is willing to claw its way through just about anything!
Over the past few months I’ve been riding the Japhy all over our local trails here in Santa Fe and while at first I was hesitant about taking it out on some of the more technical terrain, I found it to be an exceptional climber and a surprisingly fun descender.
So, let’s get into it!
