I know this is kinda a half-assed attempt at a Merckx Mondays post but this is better than nothing! Keith Anderson has these new Freddy Mertz Molteni shirts up on his Flickr. How good is that? Surely he’ll have them at the San Diego Custom Bicycle Show.

Merckx Mondays
What have we here? Is that “The Gypsy” touching Eddy Merckx’s hour record bike? It sure is. Lodovico from Columbus / Cinelli sent me an email this morning with this photo attached. What perfect timing! The photo shows Roger De Vlaeminck in awe and appreciation for the Cannibal’s most famous bicycle. But where’s the bar tape? Is this what started the bare-bar trend? I think so.

Merckx Mondays
Today’s Merckx Mondays steps away from the Eddy Merckx label and looks at one of Merckx’s earliest professional bicycles. While Merckx rode Colnago-built bicycles for Molteni, he also rode Masi-built Faema bicycles while on the team. On his recent trip to the Vigorelli, Andrea from Eroica Cicli shot photos of Dr. Luca De Ponti’s 1968 Masi Mod. Speciale cronometro, also known as the Faema Merckx. To my knowledge, this bike has not received a lot of modern coverage and these photos are the first I’ve seen of the bike.

Is Lemmy Kilmister really Eddy Merckx? Colin from Montreal thinks so. That’s what inspired him to make these Lemmy Merckx decals. I got two in the mail last week and thought they’d be a perfect starter for Merckx Mondays. I gotta say though, the “E” just isn’t there quite yet.

Yes, it’s late and yes, this is as half-assed as I get but this Eddy Merckx road bike posted up by Eisenherz Bikes is gorgeous. One question though, what the hell is up with the paint job? I’m assuming it’s either a respray or some small, lesser-known team. Check out the rest of the photos here!
Thanks to Chris J for the heads on this one!
Edit: Leave it to Jeremy from Tears4Gears to point out that the bike is a team La William from 1989.

This week’s Merckx Mondays is so packed that I’m going to give you just a teaser of a recent bike that I shot, rather than the full thing. It’s Chris’ gorgeous Corsa Extra pista and this thing is too good to try to stuff into this post. But don’t fret, there’s content from all over the world below. London, Australia and Austin, Texas.

This week’s Merckx Mondays entry is filled with great content. For the first time in a while, I’ve received some great Eddy Merckx submissions through my email. Most of the time, I get eBay auctions or Craigslist finds but this week I got artwork and other gems!

Merckx Mondays content comes in waves. At times these waves are breaking overhead and other times, they’re barely lapping the shoreline. This week I’ve got a ton of great content from all over the world. One of the best things about Austin is the great riding here. Last week, my friend Chris took me to ride Terrace Mountain. It kicked my ass! Just about 10 miles in an hour with some of the steepest climbs I’ve ever encountered. This was no joke and I can’t imagine doing the ride on anything but my MX-Leader road bike. Such a solid machine for 45mph descents and steep climbs!

Each week, I scour the ‘net using all of my known resources for Eddy Merckx material. Sometimes, I come across older Flickr pages that I’ve previously overlooked and more often than not, eBay offers some tasty finds.
It’s Merckx Mondays, after a holiday weekend. Check out some randomness below.

The Molteni jersey and frames that Merckx rode are icons from the history of professional cycling. Even when they’re in black and white, you still know what you’re looking at. Tokyo Fixed Gear recently visited Kamir’s show at Tom Dixon‘s and on display is this Molteni Corsa Extra. For those of you who appreciate throwback designs, you need to read on.

Merckx Mondays
This week, a year ago, I posted this image of Merckx in his Faema kit reminding us to chill. I’ve been posting Merckx Mondays entries for over a year now and to be honest, It’s been hard some weeks finding content. While Merckx may be the greatest cyclist of all times, finding new and interesting subject matters can be draining! But when all else fails, there’s always eBay and the gems it presents.

Ever notice that the Merckx logo is non-drive side? I thought I’d flip it for you today. It is Merckx Mondays you know? Today I’ve got a bunch of Merckx tidbits including this bit from Italian Cycling Journal:
“The town of Rivalta Brentino of Belluno (VR) is getting ready to relive the emotion of the Granfondo Eddy Merckx-Trofeo Giordana next June 12th, 2011. Eddy Merckx The event will be celebrating its fifth anniversary. Yes, you can ride along side Eddy Merckx.”

Last month in Belgium a rather large gathering of Merckx bicycle owners congregated at the Eddy Merckx Wielercentrum Gent for Stalen Ros 2010. While I found a slew of photos of the event at the time, it wasn’t until Cam Chris sent me a link to Koen Lensink’s Flickr that I was beyond impressed at the turnout. Koen’s Flickr set has photos of some stunning bikes so go check it out!

So it’s been a few weeks since the last Merckx Mondays but this week I’ve got a few gems in store for you! First up is this custom Merckx portrait done by the R.E.Load Philly crew. They had it on display at the 2010 Philly Bike Expo and it’s the perfect introduction to this week’s Merckx Mondays!

I have been slacking in the Merckx Mondays department. With a few posts in queue (awaiting a large-format scanner), I’m forced to take Kyle‘s recommendation from a few weeks ago. International Cyclespot has a great article up on the Cannibal’s 1968 victory at the Paris Roubaix. It’s a long read but is well worth it. You can also watch the above video from Eddy’s victorious year above. Damn. The hell those guys endured!

If you’ve been to Austin, chances are you’ve been to Mellow Johnny‘s and seen Lance Armstrong’s two Eddy Merckx-built bicycles hanging by the cafe. I tried my hardest to get a ladder or a stool to stand on to photograph these bikes but the best I could do was stand on Eric Puckett’s back while I shot some images. These two bikes make for a sweet Merckx Mondays, so read on for more photos!

Brilliant! This Merckx Mondays is brought to you by Landlords Cycling Club. There’s one more Eddy illustration to see over at their blog. Don’t miss it! I had a few ideas for today’s post but I couldn’t track down Eddy at Interbike and the bike flash tattoos never happened. Bummer on both accounts but probably a good thing the latter fell through!
