Roads Less Traveled: Rasputitsa Nov 7, 2017

You learn something new every day. I did not know what Rasputista is until this video. “Rasputitsa is a season when travel on unpaved roads becomes difficult, owing to muddy conditions, either from autumnal rains or spring thaw. It also refers to the condition of the roads, during those seasons.” What an ideal name for a dirt road race like the Rasputista Spring Classic.

Cool to see them only doing 40 miles. I’ve done a lot of these events that are 100+ miles where there’s just so much filler for the purpose of making the race a certain length without really adding to the experience. I’ve pretty much stopped doing them due to the logistics and training involved, but I’d be more tempted to do something like this.

    • I’m down for ‘softer times.’

don’t deceive yourself, the terrain and typical weather for this race makes it as hard as most 100 mile gravel races

It’s not that I don’t want a hard race. I’m just tired of riding a bike in the middle of the nowhere for 12+ hours.

  • I’m glad they also called it what it’s really known as up here: mud season. :D

Nice scenery. Seems like gravel racing is cycling’s snowboarding – a hip, cool thing for the youngsters to pick up.
BTW, it’s RaspUtitsa, the stress is on the U

Gravel’s mostly men in the 40s and 50s.

      • Yeah, I was gonna say, most ‘gravel’ races are filled with older men. ‘Youngsters’ are hardly the demographic.
