Beautiful Bicycle: Darren Baum’s 650B MTB Jan 14, 2013

Around the time of the Australian Custom Bike Show, Baum Cycles sent me photos of Darren’s own 650B Extensa MTB. Because it was going to be unveiled at the show, I wanted to wait a little while before posting it. I know a lot of you want to see more MTB content on the site and I can’t think of a better offering to the gods of dirt.

Built with SRAM’s XX1, this is a die hard MTBr’s dream machine and it’s already got me contemplating  my own 650B MTB.

See more below!

Many thanks to Baum for sending these over!

  • Excited to see some more MTB content! Know anyone else running the XX1 without a chain guide?

    • Brian, XX1 is specifically designed so that a chainguide is unnecessary. There are alternating tall and short teeth on the chainring that interlock with the chain to keep the chain from jumping.

      • god dammit thats cool.

  • Holy moly! stunning bike and photos, as usual from baum. that is a show stopper. also +1 for 650b! and more mtb content! hell yea!

  • toight, but that narrow no-sweep bar looks painful.

  • Mr_Bridge

That looks phenomenal, 10/10 to the photographer too.
Nice to see logo-less ENVE carbon hoops too.

  • SO hot

  • Squirt. Love the ring with no guide and custom-painted fork. As cool as the XX1 is, seems overkill for a bike like that.

  • This bike is amazing! I still think that 1×11 is cool but the 10-42t is a tad ridiculous imo. Not sure if i’m a fan of 650b yet. Still love the 29’s! Still a beautiful build.

I have so much advice to give on your MTB build! The Baum looks…like…a….speed party!

  • Joshua Robot

I’d love to know more about the fork and the rims. Is this a 29er fork with frame geometry designed to adapt it for 650b use?

As for the setup, beautiful but a bit roadied out for me. Forget slammed stems, get those bars wide and get rad.
