An In-Depth Review of the Redesigned Swift Zeitgeist Saddle/Handlebar Pack

Years ago, after finishing the slowest-known-time attempt on the Oregon Outback during its 2nd annual ride, I wound up in Seattle.  Just to clarify for those familiar with our rolling squad of rodeo clowns from that year, we didn’t shit in that dudes yard, we were drunk in the woods 40 miles behind because we couldn’t even make it to most peoples 1st night camp on our 2nd day.

Readers’ Rides: Andrew’s N=1 Sport Touring FW Evans

Oftentimes, we find the best bikes for us at the most random times. Andrew shares his build of this beautiful FW Evans with us on this week’s Readers’ Rides!

Two years ago, my wife and I bought our first place in our hometown of Franklin, TN and the space dictated we’d have enough room for one bike each. Since then I’ve been building swiss army bikes with varying degrees of success, usually overkill, and it’s only been in the last few months I’ve been completely honest with myself about what the bike will encounter…

Yeah Buddy! The Dugout Boys on the Tour Divide

Since no one is out riding the Tour Divide this year and I’m locked away in a lake house in Wisconsin, why don’t we take a trip down memory lane? Like, I found a backup of these images on my iPod kinda trip down memory lane, back to 2014 baby. This was my first proper “bikepacking” or off-road touring trip. I borrowed my dad’s 90s hybrid and put a Surly fork and some racks on it and hightailed it to Missoula after finishing my first few weeks working as a tour guide in Oregon. I met Kurt and Sam as they were working their way down the Tour Divide as the inaugural Blackburn Rangers, which I had applied for too, but didn’t get, so why not just crash their party anyway?

Two Years and a Few Falls on the Ron’s Bikes Dirt Tourer

I had been holding back on these notes for about a year now because I felt that calling it a “review” sounded like too much. The audience here is used to deep comprehension reviews and it’s very intimidating to put it in the same category when my experience with bicycles is reduced to the five I’ve owned in my adult life, this one included. So instead this is more of a short story about a bicycle, with hints of technical information where it feels required.

Hybrid Moments with Commencal’s Fast City Bike or FCB

What makes a bike an appropriate city bike? Commencal, known for their mountain bikes, just announced a flat bar “Fast City Bike”, built around SRAM’s Apex group, disc brakes, and rolling on an 6061 T6 aluminum frame. The FCB will fit 50mm tires too! So what makes this a city bike and not a gravel bike or a touring bike? That’s up for you to decide. At $1,099, the FCB is an interesting option for all three options! Check out more info at Commencal.

Tout Terrain: Blueridge GT Touring Bike

Over the past few years, the trend of bikepacking has really taken over, and with good reason! Riding on singletrack, fully-loaded is a real treat. You don’t have to worry about cars dusting you out and can truly be isolated if that’s what you’re going for. Yet, I can’t help but feel warm and fuzzy for classic touring bikes as well. I caught my bicycle touring bug on a road bike, then a touring bike, and then bikepacking, yet the lines and functionality of a classic tourer is so timeless. Tout Terrrain, makers of many on and off-road touring bikes, just announced their Blueridge touring models. Pictured here is the GT build spec and it has it all!

Specs:
-Integrated Expedition Rack II with optional EX-Rail system and Ortlieb Quick-Lock3 Mounting Kit
-Rohloff gear hub option for proven reliability
-Derailleur drivetrain option for precise and light shift action
-Thermocrom premium tubing for maximum strength-to-weight ratio
-700c wheelset favours speed and efficiency
-Drop-bar options provide aerodynamics and multiple hand positions
-Gates Carbon Drive belt-compatible frame for a strong, clean and reliable drivetrain

Crust Bikes: Evasion Lite Details

When it was released, the Crust Bikes Evasion was a true to form game changer for production bikes but even then, some games should be changed up a bit. Matt from Crust Bikes has been leaking this project for a while. A stripped-down, lighter-ish, yet just as capable Evasion, dubbed the Evasion Lite.

Here is the take-away:

– Straight 1,1/8th Crust carbon fork with internal dynamo routing and brake cable routing. 100mm X 12mm.
– Flat mount front and rear.
– Fixed 142mm X 12mm rear dropouts. No rocker dropouts on this one, in efforts to shave weight.
– Integrated headset cups.
– All sizes up to the Large have 28.6 D.T and TT, the Large and Xtra-Large have a 28.6 TT and a 31.8 DT. All sizes are heat treated CR-MO
– The steel plate on the drive side has been axed, you guessed it, save weight. However by doing this it slightly minimizes the max tire clearance.

You can see more information regarding tire size and other tidbits at Crust Bikes.

Tomii Cycles Showcase: Kevin’s Gravel Packer

This year was to be the first year Nao Tomii of Tomii Cycles was going to attend NAHBS. For a small builder like Nao, spending the kind of money it takes to pull a seat up to the table of the USA’s largest hand made bicycle show takes a lot of financial planning, so when NAHBS was postponed this year, Tomii Cycles wouldn’t be able to attend. Most builders display customer’s bikes at NAHBS and asking his clients to wait four more months for their bikes, especially during a pandemic was out of the question. I reached out to Nao and asked if we could display his bikes here at the Radavist, so this week, we’re doing just that. Here’s Kevin’s Gravel Packer, complete with paint by Jordan Low and Andrew the Maker bags…

TransCali: Bikepacking the Rubicon Trail

Sometimes the most gratifying journeys aren’t a product of being perfectly prepared; rather, they occur when you’re in the shit, working with the wrong tool for the job, and in spite of overwhelming odds, you scrape by. That’s precisely what took place this summer on a supremely challenging bike trip across the great Golden State.
