I’ve been digging what Blue Lug has been doing with their Rew10 Works framesets and Cook paintworks, but this singlespeed cross bike is my favorite thus far. Subtle splatter paint over the tan base color and a classy steel fork really do it for me. The disc front and canti rear is clever as well.

First debuted at Interbike, State Bicycle Co’s new singlespeed off-road division is now available for pre-order with a mid-November delivery. Their affordable cross bikes are available with a Reynolds wheel upgrade – which is almost as much as the bike itself, or as frames to be built us to your specification. Blastin into the fat marketplace are two singlespeed fat bikes, one coming in under $500 with an admittedly fun coaster brake setup and another with disc brakes for under $700.

Yikes! This bike looks like a real ripper. Bryan from Royal H Cycles built up this exquisite singlespeed ‘cross bike for the Bike Cult show in NYC and it’s now available for sale. The price is $3500 as shown, with a 57cm seat tube and 56.5cm top tube (center to center). I think that’s a great price, especially for such a unique frame. Adam Sklar builds bikes in Bozeman, MT and this is his newest creation: a 29+ MTB with 430mm chainstays and a Fox 32 fork. I love medium format film for shooting bike portraits, especially with a backdrop like that.

I’ll admit, this bike should have been shot with a Kleen Kanteen, not a Purist, but Kyle doesn’t like rules, at all, so it’s fine.
This MB-1 came into Golden Saddle Cyclery around the time Kyle sold his Saluki, regrettably. We’ve all been there before, you’re in a bind and you’ve gotta part ways with one bike to make ends meet, but luckily for Kyle, he kept in alignment with Grant Petersen‘s ideologies.
Bridgestone’s MB-1 hit at a unique time in mountain biking. Dirt drops were in and rigid was the (only) way. For Kyle, this bike became his around-town singlespeed, opting for White Industries components and Nitto’s Bullmoose bars. Topped off with Rubena Cityhopper tires.
Matt just fired over some photos of his 2009 NAHBS RetroTec Cycles RetroFat SS, retrofitted with the new Whisky 70w Fat Tubeless Rims to Industry Nine hubs… the consensus? I dig it, especially the color, the Cambium and those Surly Nate gumwall tires.
I think it looks like a ton of fun and if you’re going to Saddle Drive this year, you’ll probably see it mobbing around.

The All-City Junkyard Dog, or JYD isn’t an absolute staple bike in your stable, but it sure looks fun.

After passing away a few weeks back, Ezra Caldwell‘s work keeps popping up all over, miles away from his home studio in New York City. In fact, this bike was first built up by Golden Saddle Cyclery years back for Sean, a loyal customer living in Santa Barbara.
A singlespeed commuter is really all most people need. 650b tires provide a smooth ride and for medium sized frames, they look well-balanced proportionately. Exra had a way of proclaiming his approach with frame design by not really saying anything. While this bike may seem very straight-forward, the details in the metalwork are what first caught my eye.
The chainguard is attached by two 5mm bolts that actually pass through the down and seat tubes. Then the guard itself is incredibly elegant, especially when matched with the White Industries ENO cranks.
Stainless lugs and raw steel tubes make up the frame’s materials, with a good amount of patina forming on the steel. It must be the salt in the air. Santa Barbara is coastal, you know. The rear rack is custom, with wooden planks, which even out the overall build, especially when compared to Ezra’s signature wooden handlebars.
In a lot of ways, this bike is void of ostentation, yet meticulously detailed. Something that seemed to spill over from Ezra’s personality onto everything he touched.

Absolute Black not only has one of the best names, they claim to have the best singlespeed cog. Designed in the UK and manufactured in Poland, these cogs offer up quite the blast beats for your buck. As far as I can tell, they’re the first people to adopt and adapt SRAM’s “narrow wide” tooth to a singlespeed cog, which seems like a no-brainer for cross.
These beastly cogs fit Shimano freehub bodies, offer up a thick, 7mm base to prevent freehub damage and are constructed from cnc machined 7075 Txxx Aluminum, with a steel option on the way for the bigger riders.
18t is in stock for $39 with 16t and 20t on back-order until the 25th of June.
