North of Nightfall Teaser

It seems nowadays mountain bike videos get bigger, badder and honestly, more unbelievable. Athletes are pushing themselves and their locations for these flicks to the ends of the Earth. It just so happens, this video takes place in the arctic circle. Brrrrrr!

On June 19th, Red Bull hosted its annual Mini Drome race in an industrial neighborhood of Maspeth, New York. In keeping with tradition, the event had no shortage of rave lights, bass pounding DJ sets and Red Bull flowing out of every corner of the room. But unlike years past, this Mini Drome had a twist: a figure 8. Named the “Over/Under”, this miniature velodrome, sporting a cool figure 8 design, is a faster and tighter version of the already infamous “Human Powered Rollercoaster” or “La Ocho”. Teams of two and single participants, called “All Stars”, duked it out for the number one spot on the podium. In the end, team Deluxe Cycles of Brooklyn took home the team title and Red Bull’s own Addison Zawada from Jacksonville, Florida, the individual title.

This year’s Red Bull Mini Drome took place at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple on June 28th. Unlike last year’s frigid race, this year took place in the middle of summer and brought a much higher (and more leveled) caliber of racing to the event. Racers definitely took note from the year previous and brought fixed gear freestyle bikes, fixed gear DJ bikes and a lighter gear ratio. This made for some really impressive bike handling and transition pumping skills to be shown off while each racer gained more speed with every lap.

This year’s Mini Drome featured a new “fastest team” category which Brooklyn Machine Works took home. And of course the individual fastest racer which went to Brooklyn local, David Rodebough.
