Lorenzo’s Custom Pedretti Pista: A San Diego Spritz

Lorenzo’s Custom Pedretti Pista: A San Diego Spritz

The following is a story of friendship, art, and feelings. It’s the story of a custom Pedretti Pista Spritz with a special appearance from a legendary Brian Baylis-painted Holland Cycles track bike.

San Diego, California has a rich cycling history. The city and surrounding region have varied terrain and year-round temperate weather, inviting a range of cycling disciplines from track to mountain. While the 1970s and 80s were perhaps the city’s golden age for road and track racing, strong local contingencies keep the legacy alive.

Our friends Jon Pucci and Lorenzo Romagnoli are two such aficionados. Collectors, tinkerers, artists, and (some would say) style icons, the duo share an affinity for modern classics and often focus their passion on restoring neglected frames to their former glory. And sometimes, they take on new builds…

2021 Philly Bike Expo: Bishop Bikes Columbus SLX/MAX Track Bike

It wouldn’t be Philly Bike Expo coverage without a Bishop Bikes gallery and for 2021, photographer Jarrod Bunk selected this beautiful Columbus tubing track bike.

Where do I even begin here? At first, I thought Chris brought back the 2013 NAHBS track bike I photographed, and then I thought it was his personal blue track bike, stripped raw since it has the same Drillium Revival stem. Upon closer examination, this is true-to-form Chris Bishop doing his thing with the simplest form of bicycle. I just got off the phone with Chris Bishop where we spent a good forty-five minutes discussing this bike. There’s a lot going on with this “simple” machine so let’s get to it!

Mick from 100 Tacos‘ Eddy Merckx Pista has some lovely beausage. After the seat stay cap cracked, he had it repaired and rather than paint-matching the raw steel, he let it oxidize, giving this bike lots of character. While this isn’t a complete photoset, I think these photos capture this bike wonderfully. Killer ride, Mick!

Merckx Mondays: Scotty’s Eddy Merckx SLX Pista

This is not for the vintage elite, the collectors, the Eroicas, the spoke sniffers, or the internet aesthetes. Do not bother commenting on the lack of period correct toe clips, or the lack of bar tape, or how you don’t like white tires. The bar angle will rub you the wrong way and Scotty will ride on, not giving two shits.

Scotty’s a working messenger in Los Angeles. Scotty’s older than dirt. He walks with a stride, or a cadence that is only found in individuals who live, breathe and sleep track bikes. You won’t see Scotty on a road bike and in fact, you won’t see him on any other bike than this street-thrashed Eddy Merckx SLX pista. The components tell a story, moreso than any museum-grade bicycle will, regardless of heritage.

Like beausage? This bike is for you. Just remember, before you type a critique, Scotty don’t care. Happy Merckx Mondays. Thanks to Tracko for the heads up on this bike!

M-m-m-molteni Monday! While Tracko’s got a sweet Merckx Mondays post up, I’m adding to the bike coveting with this sick Molteni Pista up on eBay. If I had the money and if this thing was a little bit bigger, I’d swoop it up for sure. Some background, this is being sold by a reader, who’s a photographer in need of some new glass. I’ve been there before and it’s a tough sacrifice to make.

See the rest of Anthony’s Eddy Merckx Pista in high res here or try your luck, bidding on it at eBay!

David Lundqvist got ahold of a beautiful Stuttgart pista frameset and built it with all Campagnolo C-Record Pista. I am drooling right now. And no, that’s not my old frame. This one’s in much better condition. It’s been a while since a Merckx Mondays, but I thought this deserved one!

There’s one more gem below.

Packing a bike shouldn’t be that hard to do and yet, I’ve seen some horrid examples. Boxes made from three, with the edges exposed and the cardboard literally falling apart. Like everything FYXO, Andy did a little tutorial on his site not necessarily showing how to pack a bike, but how he packs a bike. Check it out here.

Having just let go of my beauty last year (my Stuttgart Pista, not a girl), I know how hard it is to say goodbye. Andy’s had to make that decision recently, forcing him to sell his beautiful MX-Leader track bike. Like my Stuttgart, his MXL represented his brand and his shop, FYXO Hub. But that doesn’t mean when you sell it, you can’t take it out for one last photo shoot. And like a good friend, he sent these my way!

And this is King Kog‘s. Tracko always gives me a hard time about not looking around enough, but maybe he’s into this? I’m adding this to a series of prints I hope to have at the end of the month. Who’d buy one?
