Our Solstice Packraft Paddle on the San Miguel River with Four Corners Guides

With my partner Cari’s birthday always falling on the Summer Solstice, it’s usually up to her to decide how we spend the longest day of the year. This year, with temps in the 90s here in Santa Fe, we were excited to get out on the river in our Alpacka rafts with our friends Doom and Lizzy from Four Corners Guides, where we spent our Solstice evening on the San Miguel river…

Enjoy Outdoors, Now and Tomorrow: Part 02 – Cycling

The supply chain is disrupted, bikes are selling out all over the country, more riders are out on trails and the roads alike, is this a moment? Or is this the start of a new reality for a sport that has seen popularity rise and fall before? How will small mountain towns deal with tourism which brings the income and now potentially a deadly virus? Will tourists only be from their home state? Or will the pilgrimage to our favorite riding destinations come back to life?

Watch the live stream, discussing cycling and the pandemic here at 12noon PST.

Yonder Journal: Wilderness Prints

This print from Yonder Journal celebrates and congratulates Wilderness. Here’s an excerpt:

“Congratulations Wilderness. Congratulations Wilderness for being just what you are, not that you need our gratitude. You would be better off without us anyway, the conscious, self-righteous/self-loathing, needy us. You would even be better off without the fawning, in awe, perpetually blissed-out us, the enlightened us, the elevated us. You would just be better off without us, without our tents, our non-motorized vehicles, our horses, our campfire rings, and our buried feces, you would still be you, an even better, cleaner, you, you would be Wilderness just as you were meant to be, absent the blight of consciousness, the acne of sentience.”

You should read the whole piece at Yonder Journal and pick up a print at the YJ Web Shop!

Nahanni Reforestation

My good friend Benji at Poler’s wife, Nahanni, recently decided to undertake a massive project. Her father ran a treeplanting business on the west coast in British Columbia from 1977 to 1987 called Nahanni Reforestation. At the time, Nahanni was a young girl and she grew up in the woods – not to mention she was born in a teepee. Years later, she discovered all of her father’s negatives and began scanning them.

It’s inspiring to see it all unfold and now, she’s launching a Kickstarter to gain funding for a book.

On the Road to Interbike in a 1970 VW Bus

On the Road to Interbike in a 1970 VW Bus

This time of year, as warm days are fading, timing is crucial for road trips. As Interbike approached, Mission Workshop / Acre had discussed doing a bit of a photo story with Golden Saddle Cyclery, myself and Sean from Team Dream, who would bring his 1970 VW bus along. We’d shoot instant film from the Impossible Project and document the journey.

Like all trips, things don’t adhere to any schedule, or plan, or route. We knew what we wanted to do and ensured we’d get in at least one ride – more on that later. Since the van was going into the Mission / Acre booth, we had to be in town this morning. After a few hiccups, we made it and most importantly, so did the van with all our stuff!

I’ll have photos from us shredding in the Sequoias shortly, but for now, let’s look at some end of summer car camping photos. Road tripping with three of your friends is the best.
