The Monumental Loop 2.0: A Father and Daughter Bikepack
This is Melina’s first bikepacking trip. She’s been on a couple of road tours and knows how to turn a set of cranks. That said, off-road has never been her thing. In fact she can’t remember the last time she threw her leg over a mountain bike. She’s headed off to graduate school soon, and I want her to be hooked on bikepacking before she leaves. So this needs to be awesome. Naturally, I’ve turned to southern New Mexico and the venerable Monumental Loop.

2018 Philly Bike Expo: Fat Chance Yo Eddy 2.2 – Jarrod Bunk
2018 Philly Bike Expo: Fat Chance Yo Eddy
Photos and words by Jarrod Bunk
Chris Chance brought a newer Yo Eddy to Philly Bike Expo this year, the new Yo Eddy 2.2 had a triple butted stainless top tube and downtube, as well as some new dropouts, and a clever chainstay yoke. These Yo Eddy framesets are produced by Chris Chance and Steve Potts, and the rest of the Fat Chance line (Slim Chance, Chris Cross) are built by Commotion.
With the frame and fork being produced in the USA, the next logical step was to ring White Industries for a Headset, Bottom bracket and Cranks with matching blue extractors, Which look great on this bike. It’s rolling on Praxis AL32 wheels, which are stopped by the revered Paul Component Klamper brakes. Nostalgia aside the Yo Eddy 2.2 checks all of the current MTB boxes, with a finish to make you swoon.

The Surly Midnight Special is Truly a Fat-Tire Road Bike
The Surly Midnight Special is a drop bar bike that fits big tires – real big tires. Beyond fitting huge tires, what makes it unique among the expanding options in this category is that its geometry is derived from a road bike rather than the ‘cross bikes that most “Road Plus” bikes have descended from. Chainstays are short and head tube angles are relatively steep across the board, making for a quick-handling bike that loves to carve corners at any speed – but especially when you’re going fast.
Don’t let the massive tire clearance fool you; despite the wide 650B tires, it handles on the road more like bikes you’d expect to see narrower tires on. Because of this, the Midnight Special is difficult to classify. It fits big tires and it’s got disc brakes and drop bars, but it’s not a ‘cross bike and it’s unlike any bike being marketed as gravel. It fits more tire than a Straggler but its geometry is more like that of the Pacer. So let’s get into that.
