Search and State #NYCtoGSC Party in Los Angeles at Golden Saddle Cyclery

If there was anyway I could be there, I would be! Search and State‘s NYC to LA trip looks like it’s been completely insane. Rider Joseph Holway has ridden for the past 20, some-odd days from the SAS factory in New York to Los Angeles to deliver a jersey. It’s a wild concept that has my interest piqued.

Los Angeles, head to GSC on the 1st of July and welcome Joseph, LA style. Get that man a drink and take him to Smoggy!

Weiss Watches are Made in Los Angeles

Weiss Watches are Made in Los Angeles

Many would consider a wrist watch a luxury item and by all means, rightfully so, especially in the digital age. For those of us who still wear watches, it’s nice to see domestic production returning to the US in such a niche market. These days, there are millions of options, all of which look great, but when you begin to weed down those with casings made in Taiwan and China, suddenly, you’re looking at an investment.

I don’t know many people who can walk into a luxury boutique and drop thousands of dollars on a Rolex, Heuer or an IWC, but seeing something made in Los Angeles for around a grand isn’t that bad. At all. Especially considering that no one else is manufacturing their stainless casings, sapphire crystals, hands, faces and bands in the USA like Weiss Watch Company is.

Cuppow and a Chris Chance in Los Angeles

I absolutely love everything about these photos. Greg from Cuppow brought his Chris Chance road bike to the west coast for a little R&R&R (riding, rest and relaxation). While he was in Los Angeles, Kyle took him to the blacktop for breakfast and shot some photos of his rad ‘Chance.

Los Angeles You’ve Been Rad!

Los Angeles You’ve Been Rad!

Is the riding in LA the best in the country, or did a group of my close friends make it that way and present me with a great time, every time I’m in town? Who knows. I enjoy riding in LA, be it MTB, road or cross and while I love to ride road here, I’ve only begun to scratch the surface of the real dirty Los Angeles.

Oh and Ty can really boost his Surly Pugsley!

Locals Only Ride in Los Angeles

Locals Only Ride in Los Angeles

Locals Only isn’t about exclusivity when used in this context, because truth be told, each time I’ve been on this ride, there are usually more out of towners than locals. It’s more of a way that Kyle and Ty like to throw visitors into the proverbial fire. The first time I did this ride, it was at night, in the rain, during goat head season and with no lights. It sucked. This time, it was rad. I won’t post the route (locals only, breh), but we did about 25 miles and 3,000′.

Cali is Not California™ – Los Angeles Ride with Geoff McFetridge

At a glance, Los Angeles might not feel very bike-friendly, but scratch the surface like a lottery ticket to find an intertwined network of very open, majestic roads, many within the city itself. If you don’t have time for Dirt Mulholland, or the Angeles National Forest, Griffith Park and the famous Observatory will do just fine, especially if you start your ride out at the Trails for a coffee and pastry.

This particular morning, a solid group of people gathered to ride with LA-based artist and creator of the fabled Mudfoot racing team, Geoff McFetridge. No one was half-wheeling, no personal records were set, we all just chatted as we climbed Griffith Park and took a quick loop through “La La Land”. The ride ended at Geoff’s studio where we were given insight into his daily operations…

During the Tour of California, Rapha North America and PiNP got together once again for a series of stories from the road. Under the guise Cali is Not California™, I took photos and Jeremy Dunn of Rapha North America told the tales, all relating to the thing we love: riding bikes with friends.

See more on this afternoon at Rapha’s blog, including Geoff’s illustration for the La Centieme Poster Collection at the Cycle Club SF.

Tonight in Los Angeles: Velospeak at Shelterhalf

It’s a night of Made in the USA bicycles, components and accessories at Shelter Half in LA.

Tonight is the night to celebrate cycling product made in the USA. On view will be all three models from Detroit’s Shinola, a beautiful one-off Sycip Java Boy, and the Cielo Tanner Goods Edition bicycle. Also in store is plentiful product from Swrve Cycling, a personal favorite of mine. Matt and Muriel of Swrve will be there tonight to detail the wonderful features of their BLK Label line. There will be a handful of Paul Components as well as product from Mission Workshop. This is all on top of Shelter Half’s already amazing selection of goods from all over the US. The event starts at 7pm and is located at Shelter Half, 161 South La Brea.

Jamming Out in Los Angeles

Jamming Out in Los Angeles

Well, not that kinda jamming.

I’ve been very fortunate every time I’ve been to LA, only because I have the best friends there. Friends who are the best ride guides and of course, own the best bike shop in LA (I mean the best bar in Silverlake). Tracko took me on one of the best cross rides I’ve been on in Los Angeles the last time I was in town. Parts of it were very LA, while other sections felt like Austin and some even reminded me (mostly smelled like) Australia. We got to fuck around a bit on tech sections, avoid dog walkers, took a few spills and hammered it home just in time for lunch. Los Angeles really does have some of the best bike riding in the country…

We totalled 48 miles and around 3,600′ of elevation but who gives a shit about the numbers with trails like this. See for yourself below!

2012 SSCXWC in Los Angeles

2012 SSCXWC in Los Angeles

Beginning any race with a LeMans start is sure to cause a ruckus, but add in a real life “cycling salmon” and things get interesting. This year’s SSCXWC began with a bang. Both the men’s and women’s field showed that you can truly have fun and still be somewhat competitive. From the snot rocket cannons, to the cesspool pit and even the crowd-induced bottle necked course, the racers had to endure a lot more than they bargained for. Oh and mud in SoCal? The cross gods smiled upon LA last Sunday. See for yourself in the gallery.

AMGEN Tour of California #ATOC: Stage 08 – Los Angeles

This whole trip has been a blast and what better way to end these escapades than with a party at the Golden Saddle Cyclery? As the AMGEN Tour of California finished up in LA, the city rejoiced. Over at GSC, the party was going strong and Hennie, the Rapha Mobile Cycle Club served up the coffee as Kyle and company made brunch.
