Chumba Bikes just announced the launch of its new wheel-building service under the name Stoke Custom Wheels. The service is owned and operated by Chumba Bikes and will operate out of the Chumba HQ in Austin, TX. Read on to find out more.

Coming from Chumba’s perspective, a brand that builds rock-solid bicycles that stand the tests and challenges of bikepacking racing, ultra-racing, trail riding, and gravel racing, this same ethos is applied to Stoke Custom Wheels. For over 10 years Chumba’s custom wheels have been consistently proven at events like Tour Divide, the Colorado Trail Race, and AZTR under our clients and team riders.

The mission behind Stoke Custom Wheels is to provide handbuilt custom wheels that are made to last. All of Stoke’s wheels are built to the highest standards, using practiced techniques and high-quality components.

Offering custom wheels for mountain bikes, gravel, road, and touring, Stoke wheels are tuned to the style of each rider. Riders can customize the rim, hub, spoke count, and type of spoke to customize the wheelset to fit ride goals using an online wheel customizer tool.

The component offerings have been chosen based on proven characteristics in performance and durability. The techniques and care in each wheel build complement the components to make the highest quality wheel possible. Component choices are available from manufacturers such as Astral, Chris King, DT Swiss, Easton, ENVE, HED, Industry Nine, Nox, Onyx, Raceface, Sapim, Velocity, WeAreOne, White Industries, WTB, Zipp, and many others.

Stoke will also specialize in dynamo wheel builds, pairing primarily SON dynamo hubs to various rim choices. Expert advice and customer service are provided by Stoke to help plan out lighting and charging options for commuting and bike touring adventures. Lighting and charging kits are available on the site from kLite, or by request for other brands.

In addition to custom wheels, many in-stock wheelsets will be available, offering ready-to-go dynamo options and full gravel and MTB wheelsets built to the same quality as the custom sets. With Stoke’s depth of knowledge and component resources, they can also recommend and supply additional components to complete your new wheelset, like tires, cassettes, rim inserts, and more.

In addition to the component manufacturer warranties, all Stoke Custom Wheels come with labeled backup spokes, complimentary truing for up to two years and free spoke replacement for broken spokes for up to one year.

Wheel building specs:

• Single-wheel or full wheelset builds are available
• Options to add dynamo hubs for commuting, bikepacking, and night riding setups
• Wheels built within +/- 5% average tension on each respective side. This means that the spokes on each side of a wheel are balanced, improving durability and longevity of staying true.
• All wheel builds come with a Park Tools Wheel Tension App measurement to confirm build quality and spoke tension balance
• Wheels are pre-stressed so that they don’t come out of true on the first few rides
• Proper build techniques using thread locker, spoke washers when necessary, and correctly sized spokes
• Choices of carbon or alloy rims, quality DT Swiss or Sapim spokes and nipples, and many hub options can be selected to fine-tune the ride quality of each wheelset.
• Complimentary truing for up to two years and free spoke replacement for broken spokes up to one year.
