Kona Founders Purchased the Brand From Kent Outdoors

Kona Bicycles went through a rough patch around Sea Otter classic and like we predicted, the brand isn’t dead, in fact it was purchased from Kent Outdoors by its original founders, Dan Gerhard and Jake Heilbron. In 1988 Jake Heilbron, aka “Jake the Snake,” founded Kona Mountain Bikes with Dan Gerhard, so it’s amazing that the brand is returning to its roots. Read the full press release, written by the Kona team, below.

Bikepacking Roots: Rolling Horse Route – Northwestern Colorado Multi-Day Tour

If you’re looking for a two-week-long tour of epic doubletrack in Northwestern Colorado, then check out the latest Bikepacking Roots CRoP! The Rolling Horse route was designed with particular attention to the region’s rich natural and human history. It roughly circumnavigated the Grand Hogback–a 90-mile-long spine of upturned rock marking the geologic meeting of the Southern Rockies with the Colorado Plateau.

The route seeks to reveal the intimate connections between the many varied landscapes once stewarded by the Nuche (Ute people); specifically, those whose ancestors hunted amongst the high places we now know as the Elks, Raggeds, Flattops and Roan; and gathered along the banks of the Roaring Fork, Crystal, Colorado, and White Rivers.

Cactus Store’s Don’t Bust the Crust Shirts

Back when this website was based in Los Angeles, Echo Park’s Cactus Store was our local shop for all things succulent and cacti. From potting soil to pots, books, and apparel, it had it all. Well, that store has closed, but the brand has a greenhouse shop in NYC and an online store where they sell lots of nature-nerd apparel. Coinciding rather closely with our From Biocrust, With Love, video project, the brand re-upped the “Don’t Bust The Crust” shirts, officially licensed and all. Check them out at the Cactus Store.

Ron’s Bikes Aluminus Maximus Gravel Frames

Inspired by the work of Charlie Cunningham and other cult classic aluminum steeds, the Ron’s Bikes Aluminus Maximus gravel bike ($2,000 frameset) is the anti-carbon propaganda demigod we need from small-batch bicycle production. These bikes are made in the USA by Frank the Welder and have been selling like hot cakes over the past several months, so when it came time to list them on RonsBikes.com, Arya and Ronnie only had sizes 51 cm and 60 cm left. So if you have short legs or long legs, they’ve gotcha covered.

We’d like to remind everyone that Arya and Ronnie lost their factory and means of primary income last year and it’s been hard on the brand. So if you have any free money and would like to see Ron’s Bikes grow, check out their in-stock-today items and throw them some love.

2024 MAAP Alt_Road

MAAP is best known for pushing the aesthetic of cycling apparel, bridging between trendy Gorpcore and traditional silhouttes. The vessel for this expansion is its Alt_Road line, which for 2024, has a number of new kit pieces. Our favorite are these Alt_Road Overshorts ($135). They’re a loose-fitting shorts meant to be worn over bibs, or perhaps with nothing underneath at all. Check out the full Alt_Road drop at MAAP.

Fitz Cyclez Shop Visit: NorCal Terroir

Fitz Cyclez Shop Visit: NorCal Terroir

During his sojourn to Northern California in April, John Watson wanted to document one framebuilder in particular whose work had caught his eye. John Fitzgerald has been building elegant custom steel bicycles under the name Fitz Cyclez for just under two decades, yet he tends to fly under the radar. He doesn’t attend the big bike shows, and he’s not really interested in marketing his brand. But as anyone who’s seen a Fitz in the wild can attest, his work speaks for itself – and his work is seen often throughout Sonoma County and the greater Bay Area, thanks to Fitz’s popularity within the randonneuring community.

To tell the tale of Fitz Cyclez from the eyes of a local, John Watson tapped Santa Rosa’s own Nicholas Haig-Arack to interview John Fitzgerald. Take a peek into the world of Fitz Cyclez.
