Shots from the Road 04.06.2012

Yesterday, I woke up rather early and went on a little ride with Ross. It wasn’t particularly long, nor were there many climbs, we just wanted to get a spin in before the weekend hit us. Austin’s great for many reasons, two of which are photos like this, taken from my Instagram. What I didn’t get photos of were the two pitt bull / mastiff mix dogs that chased Ross for a mile. The water bottle trick didn’t even phase those beasts.

Next Week: Dueling Banjos

If Andy from Fyxomatosis has taught me anything it’s “you don’t have to post photos right after you take them”. And for that matter, you don’t have to always post your own photos from rides. Next week, we’ll be dueling banjos

Raidô Means Ride or Journey

I’m so stoked on the new Viking vector logo done by Paul DeVay of Angry Icons (shown in a clipping mask above). Its simplicity is a new direction for the site and it’ll be popping up quite frequently in new products. This past week, I’ve been working on so many collaborations that my head is spinning and the only way I can keep it straight is by riding. Here in Austin, the trees have been barren for so long that it’s taken all winter for new growth to sprout. The live oaks and mesquite trees are like dripping veins from the sky and when you’re in Texas, the summer heat shows no mercy, sending you to their shade. I spend a lot of time cooling down while riding and when you look up, you’re greeted with chaotic beauty. The ride and journey continues…

Next up, printing this Raidô graphic on a shirt to correspond with a 4/20 product launch and if all goes as planned, the Necronomicog set will be available soon after. Stay tuned!

The Dam Loop

Reportage

The Dam Loop

Look, cycling in Austin is by no means as “epic” as Oregon, Colorado or California, but we’ve got some damn fine riding here. In Travis county, the elevation maxes out at 1,300′ and drops down to around 400′, leaving most of the gain on your rides to short, steep climbs. The Dam Loop is a popular ride for weekenders and training elite alike but it’s no where near as fun as some of the hill loops, unless you incorporate a few into the mix, which is what we tend to do. It’ll come in around 50 miles and over 3,000′ if you play it right but it doesn’t have to end there. And it’s hard not to, especially if it’s cool out and the heat hasn’t gotten to you. Not to mention the looming skies and limestone cliffs make for great scenery.

In the few days that I was in Austin after Australia, I hit the loop with Jon a few times and this Recent Roll showcases that.

Cardiel x Chrome: Sacramento to Chico

Here’s the latest from Cards and Chrome:

“On a summer day, Chrome Familia member John Cardiel and a couple of friends rode from his home in Sacramento 100 miles north to the Chrome Bag factory in Chico, CA. The intent was to see his new Fortnight travel bag being made. It just so happened that the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company is two blocks away from the Chrome bags factory. Here is what ensued.”

Hill Country Tacos

Reportage

Hill Country Tacos

No, we didn’t stop there to eat. Not this time. Ross and I have been riding a lot when I’m in town. One day, we took off for the dam loop and finished it off with Jester and 360. It’s been raining a lot here in Austin, causing all the limestone cliffs on 360 to collapse due to the excess run-off. It’s an eerie sensation to ride next to large, wet rocks, ready to fall but if you catch the sun just right, it sparkles in the water. This Recent Roll was taken a month or so ago, when I had just gotten my Bishop. It’s lovely weather to be riding in right now. Get out on your bikes!

Friday Afternoon NYC Randomness

Reportage

Friday Afternoon NYC Randomness

Yesterday was a blast. As I was getting my coffee in the morning, a young man came flying up the sidewalk yelling “Checkpoint!”. Immediately, I thought there was a race. Turns out, he was lost, so I followed him all over the city looking for the an alleycat. We stopped everywhere looking for fliers or information. Chari, Continuum, all the shops downtown. While we were in the city, I headed up to meet Daniel from Search and State and then we blasted 7th avenue with a group of guys from LA and SF before heading back to Brooklyn.

Riding a track bike in NYC is a buzz like none other and these photos came out sick.

How I Learned to Ride a Straight Line

How I Learned to Ride a Straight Line

Flying into Far West Road / Portra 160NC Yashica T4

There’s a great story on Williamsburg Greenpoint News+Arts called “How I Learned to Ride a Straight Line“. Where the author, John D. Eustice (you NYC racers should know that name) relates his years of racing in Belgium to everyday cycling practices. Advice like “steer with your belly button” and “relax your jaw” are things we’ve all heard but the punch-line is a story about how an old Belgian woman taught him how to ride a straight line. It’s worth the read, especially the part about not riding like an asshole down the bridges of NYC…

Thanks for the heads up Affinity!
