The Radavist

I like bikes and people that were born to get dirty. Riding steel on and off road with friends, both close and new is a great way to bide your afternoons in Northern California. I got to spend a lot of saddle time with these three bikes, all of which I’ll be posting up this week, so stay tuned.

I’m heading back to Austin, where I’ll barely have time to process before heading back out to NYC, then Philly, Pittsburgh and Portland. What a whirlwind month it’s gonna be!

The 2012 Rapha North West Gentlemen’s Race was a lot of fun to photograph and this video gives you some insight as to how grueling it was to participate. The teams started off, with a general idea of the course, since it’s a popular ride in Portland but finished not knowing what hit them. After 120 miles, they climbed 12,000′ of elevation. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be offering high-resolution, professionally printed and packed photographic prints through the new PiNP Web Shop. The first in the series is entitled Highway 39. This winding road is found in the Angeles National Forest, en route to Cloud Burst off Highway 2. This was shot using Neopan 400, so expect lots of God grain.

An 11×16 print on glossy paper will run you $35 shipped in the continental USA.

Because of the delicate nature of photographic prints, I will only be shipping this batch to the USA. If you would like one internationally, please contact me for pricing.

Earlier this year, Jon, Ross and I took off on a 120 mile ride out to Colorado Bend State Park here in Texas for a weekend of camping. Poler sent along some goods and I shot some photos, many of which have just now made it onto the Poler site. Head on over and check them out! A little over a year later, general tourism is still out of the question in this area but for cyclists, there is no shortage of great roads to ride here.”

Since Tracko is in limbo right now, he can’t put up rad videos like this one by Ben Ingam about L’Eroica and Avon Celli.

To help raise awareness for Cystic Fibrosis, a group of riders headed out for London from Paris on their track bikes. So far they’ve raised €10,500 for the cause. Expect a full video in September. Check out more here.

The 5th Floor is throwing a ride from London to Windsor and I wish I could be going!

I must have missed this video when it first came out. The Rock’n’Rollin guys took on the Stelvio Pass and all I can say is “jealous”. Check out the full report here, with photos.

The guys from Deux North went hunting again. This time up Whiteface Mountain.

Mr. Grandpasaurus Rex got rad on our ride up to Mt. Disappointment two weeks ago. So pitted!

If you follow @KyleBKelley and myself on Instagram, these photos should come as no surprise. Tuesday was my last full day in LA and I wanted to do a ride I’ve never done before. But we wanted to take one of the shop helpers, Christian with us, so where would we go?

We began doing Mt. Wilson: 18 miles of climbing and 4,500′ of elevation, which is a piece of cake. Then, we left Christian to nap for an hour at Redbox and headed up Mt. Disappointment, with its rumored top pitches of over 20%. A would be easy feat for my Bishop road with its Austin-hill gearing (34×28) but I was on Ty’s Hufnagel with a granny gear of 38×25. I.e. it hurt like hell.

Even Kyle, who’s a mountain goat of sorts admitted to almost getting off his bike. 3 miles, 1,200′ later and we were at the top and on this one, the views were breathtaking.

Our day totalled around 65 miles and over 7,200′ of climbing. While Kyle doesn’t like to get hung up on distance and elevation, I like to throw it in there not to brag but to show that riding is about having fun with your friends, even while you’re all in pain!
