Argonaut Ride in Mt. Hood National Forest

Argonaut Ride in Mt. Hood National Forest

Every new bike needs a maiden voyage and last Saturday, that’s what we intended on doing. Ben from Argonaut, Billy and I headed out to Estacada, Oregon for some playtime in Mt. Hood National Forest. I had no idea what to expect other than “we’ll be climbing immediately. And that we did. Before reaching the ranger station at mile 25, we were in a good place. Billy’s sidewall blew out, but a simple dollar bill boot fixed that. Aside from the blow out, mechanical systems were good to go. For the time being.

Around mile 48, I noticed Ben and Billy pulled over immediately (I tend to be at the back a lot on 5-8% grade climbs up mountains). In all his crazy torque, Billy popped a spoke on his drive side, rendering his wheel a wobbly mess. I really wanted to finish the projected 120 mile loop but “no man left behind” is a more pressing mantra. At that point, it was snowing, the roads were wet and we were freezing as we descended at a whopping 14mph, awaiting the imminent threat of an exploded wheel. But alas, we made it to the ranger station, where we left Billy to be picked up by car as Ben and I trudged onward.

In the end, 75 miles and 5,200′ of climbing ain’t bad. Truth be told, it was too beautiful up there to make it a hammer fest, so I’m glad a mechanical merited some time off the bike for photos. We ended up at the Safari Club, a vegan’s nightmare. Why? See for yourself in the gallery. This is one of my favorite Recent Roll posts of all time.

Stop and Ride

What is it about the internet that makes people so entitled and judgmental? Who cares if someone else’s bike is set up differently than how you prefer yours. It’s their bike, not yours. I’m sure if your bike was featured, others would point out the nuances that you actually prefer, as faults. People are so quick to point out the negatives, rather than lift up the positives. All these symptoms are the mid-week stir-crazies. Just stop being so critical and look forward to the times when you can ride with others.

Just stop being an asshole and ride your fucking bike how you prefer.

Deux North: The Hunt 2

The newest video from Deux North‘s Hunt series is pretty rad. It’s not just a bunch of dudes climbing a mountain, there’s a dialog here, a tie in with the local’s favorite past time: the demolition derby. Check it out!

It Was a Busy Weekend in Portland

Apologies for the lack of posts this weekend, turns out it’s easy to forget about work when you’re out riding all day. I arrived in Portland on Thursday and got to pick up this beauty from Argonaut Cycles. There’s a long story behind this bike, which I’ll be sharing with you this week, so stay tuned. ‘Til then, all I’ll say is, man, riding Saltzman on a brand new bike is pretty rad…

Brooklyn to Philly 2012

Brooklyn to Philly 2012

Two years ago, I rode with a small group of friends from Brooklyn to Philly. Well, technically from Brooklyn to the WTC PATH station, then took the train to Newark and rode from there to Philly. Rather than riding along the shoulder of busy highways and biways, we took the gravel path along the Delaware & Raritan Canal State Park. It was shorter than the last time we did it (previously totaling 120 miles) but that’s because the route was dialed. This year’s ride came in around 100 miles and barely breaking 1,700′ of climbing. Nothing to brag about but for someone like me, who hasn’t experienced an actual Fall in a few years, it was a lovely ride.

Shot with my Yashica T4 and cheap Kodak film. Check out more photos in the gallery.

Grain and Grade

On my recent trip to California, my mornings and afternoons were spent combing the roads for ideal backdrops. Here’s a few outtakes that are free to consume. Please, don’t fret, the weekend’s coming soon.

The Brovet was Hell

The Brovet was Hell

This ride broke me and I’m not ashamed to admit that. After 8 hours of riding in 25 degree weather, through headwinds, frozen rain and mud, I cracked. When I packed for the trip to NYC, Philly and this ride, Sandy wasn’t even on the map. So I left all my rain gear, winter gloves, jackets and wool at home in Austin. In a mad dash to acquire appropriate gear, I found myself without a lot of options.

Cheap gloves, leg warmers and a packable rain jacket quickly reminded me that I was underprepared for the weather we faced out of Pittsburgh and into the mountains. For the entire morning, my body convulsed as I shivered. My hands went numb for hours and I was soaking wet from head to toe. I still can’t feel my finger tips or palms and my jaw was sore this morning from chittering all day. But today was a different story… We’re sitting just outside of DC, awaiting our flights home.

More on this story to come. For now, check out the #GoYonder Instagram tag and I want to thank all the dudes who made this trip so memorable!

About to #GoYonder

About to #GoYonder

Today, before the sun is up, a small group of friends and I are going to embark on a 600k brevet-style ride out of Pittsburgh, over the Appalachian mountains and into DC. Loosely termed a “brovet”, this ride is part of a project that’s come to be called Go Yonder. I can’t say anything more than that but we’ll be posting photos on Instagram ( @JohnProlly @moi_is_moi @tytanium @no_ralphy @quesofrito @coelmaness @yonderjournal ) of all the randomness we encounter for the next 36 hours.

The Mudville will be my work horse and since we have no idea what to expect on the road, it’s set up with a SON hub, an Edelux lamp (mounted to a Cronometro Nob, via a R&M mount) and a Viscacha saddle bag by Revelate Designs. We’re all hobo-camping, probably only clocking in 2 hours of sleep, so I’ve got a bag liner, a tarp and a merino hoodie. Fingers crossed, loose legs and Scrapple!

See you on the other side of the mountains and check out more photos below.

I’m in Philly for the Bike Expo

I’m in Philly for the Bike Expo

This year, my friend Harry from NYC emailed me, asking if I’d be interested in riding from Brooklyn to Philly for the Bike Expo, like we did two years ago. I needed no persuading. I booked my ticket and before I knew it, I found myself in Brooklyn for a few days.

Today we rode to Philly and the route is amazing this time of year. I haven’t seen Autumn in years and man, it was in full vibrancy. Here’s a few Instagram shots, with 35mm on the way.

Our route looks complicated, but is actually pretty simple. Try it out yourself.

Recent Roll: Here’s to the Open Road

I got my film back from last week’s riding in Northern California and there are some straight up road porn shots in there. Take this for instance. Who knew that the 128 is this gorgeous! It’ll be a little bit before I post the rest of the photos, but for now, enjoy the open road.
