Universally Pegoretti: Fatto a Mano in New York

In ‘Universally Pegoretti,’ we explore the lives of Pegoretti owners around the globe and, in the process, discover that passion for Pegoretti is universal.

In the second episode of this occasional film series, we head to New York to meet Anthony Mangieri of Una Pizza Napoletana and his partner, Christina. From early morning Central Park laps on their Pegorettis to the kitchen and colorful creativity at Una Pizza, Anthony and Christina talk about the sense of peace and fulfillment the bike brings them, Anthony’s eternal connection to good food, and what his philosophy towards handmade pizza has in common with Pegoretti.

A Farewell Pegoretti Love 3 Aluminum Road Bike

We’ve lost a lot of celebrities in the past few years but none shook me as much as the passing of Dario Pegoretti. The man was a legend. A true auteur. A builder that didn’t just weld bikes together, he created moving art. After the news settled of his death, I felt like I hadn’t paid my respects. That is until this bike rolled past me at Chris King the other day.

This weekend is the Chris King Open House, and to commemorate Pegoretti, Above Category shipped CKPC out this Love 3 aluminum road bike. Handmade and hand painted by the man himself. Aluminum you say? Yes! Dario made a small run of these bikes from Columbus’ XLR8 tubesets. He machined his own dropouts with replaceable hangers, used 30mm OS chainstays, a 31.6 seatpost for extra stiffness, and a threaded BB for worry-free rides. After his final fun of Love 3 frames, he continued his practice in steel.

Above Category built this bike up, as part of their permanent collection, so I had to show my respects to Pegoretti and give it some extra special love on the shop floor at Chris King, where the bottom bracket, headset, and hubs were machined.

Ride in Peace, Dario.

Più di Pegoretti: Design Students Products

“Enthusiasm for cycling, commitment to your own work and the openness to learn new things from each other — that is the bond that unites the students from the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design and Dario Pegoretti, the master builder of top-quality, individual frames for racing bikes. For weeks he and the students wrestled with ideas and plans — thinking, drawing and designing. The many ideas finally gelled into a singular project: Più di Pegoretti.”

Anyone who’s attended design school, can attest to at least one professor who has singlehandedly changed their outlook on the world. I’d imagine Pegoretti would be such a professor. Check out the Più di Pegoretti project and see what his students came up with this semester!

Dario Pegoretti is a true artist. A builder who’s known for his elaborate paintings as much as he’s regarded for his frame design and construction. His work evokes varied reactions spanning from awe to confusion and yet, there’s a beauty in each brush stroke.

Derek Yarra from Above Category recently visited Pegoretti’s shop in Italy and took some great photos, including this portrait. Head over to the AC Blog to see the rest!
