Wolf Tooth Components: Thru Axles and Trainer Caps

With thru axles an industry standard and most thread pitches have been established, Wolf Tooth felt it was time to throw their hat into the ring of axles but they added their own design twist.

“Knowing the pain of damaging their prized frames, they added end caps that would take the brunt of rock scrapes and crashes. And because to look good is to feel good, they decided to offer Axle Caps in eight anodized colors. Caps thread into a dedicated recess in the axle head and are easily replaceable or swappable with an 8mm hex key.

Because cold weather and short days are never far from a Minnesotan’s mind, they also created Trainer Caps to reduce barriers to winter workouts. Non-drive side Axle Caps are joined by drive-side plugs that can be installed or removed with ease to make the prospect of hopping on the trainer a little more bearable.”

Bags by Bird: Teardrop Handlebar Bag

Jay Ritchey’s bag company, Bags by Bird, launched earlier this month with the Goldback saddle pack, a modern spin on a classic bag design. BXB just announced their new Teardrop Handlebar Bag, designed for dirt drops, or other handlebars with flare. The bag’s unique profile allows for maximum portage storage with drops, keeping to a tapered design. Naturally, it won’t fit on all drops, so check out the dimensions at Bags by Bird before ordering!

In Stock: the Radavist Wool Socks in Jasper Green and Red As Well As Other Items!

Wool socks are a cycling apparel staple. Wear them year round and they’ll wick sweat in the summer and provide warmth in the winter. We love DeFeet’s wool socks because they blend nylon and polyester in their wool for increased durability and lifespan. We’ve got two color options this year, inspired by one of our favorite minerals found in the American West, green Jasper and red Jasper.

Each sock has our jackal on the side and the Radavist script logo on the foot. Made in the USA by DeFeet and in stock now at the Radavist Web Shop. We also restocked the long sleeve t-shirts in all sizes. We also have new 1″ Jackal lapel pins in stock too!

Please note: we will try our hardest to get these socks to you before Christmas, but there is no way to guarantee delivery before December 25th. Thanks for understanding!

This past summer I was lucky enough to meet to some truly amazing people in Minneapolis.  I noticed a common thread connecting these wonderful humans. It all culminated in getting to ride with Delcie on her über custom Cup Cake…

Peacock Groove

Erik Noren is a bit of mythical beast in the world of framebuilding. His bikes are outlandish, sparkly, and painstakingly detailed. With his newer venture, Cake Bikes, he seeks to build proportionally-sized, high-performance bikes for shorter riders. Cake partnered with Minneapolis Wheel masters HED cycling to offer fat-bikes built around a 24 x 4” platform and has since moved into building cross and gravel/adventure bikes built around a 650b platform, and some yet smaller wheeled bikes which we will get to at the end.  While the bikes’ geometries are focused on smaller humans regardless of gender, the cake race and adventure team is compromised entirely of women/trans/femme/non-binary riders.

Bags by Bird: Goldback Bag

Bags by Bird is a side project of Jay from JayBird films. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because Jay makes beautiful videos, most notably El Silencio, a project with Tumbleweed Bikes. On these intense bikepacking trips, Jay was testing out his prototype bag, and working on launching his company, Bags by Bird, or BXB for short. His flagship bag is the Goldback, available in a variety of sizing and material options and made one at a time by Jay. See the Goldback bags at Bags by Bird.

One of Liz and my stops along the great American Bike Shop Tour of 2017 was Bedrock Bags in Durango, Colorado. A larger than life operation, in a very small space, boasting that they “make the best bikepacking gear on the market.” And when I mean small…I mean small, at first I had no clue how everyone worked in this small space at the same time, but as Joey Ernst, one of the owners, and Tae Hillyer, the production manager, and I chatted about the business I began to understand. This space had been thought out in the same tailored, tight, and clean aesthetic as all of their bags. Just like you don’t want your knees rubbing your framebag, everyone at Bedrock Bags had created a very workable space with no elbow rubbing in a very small, but very efficient corridor.

So you know your knees aren’t going to be rubbing one of their framebags.

We’ve Added Some New Products to the Web Shop

We’ve been wanting to do a MTB jersey for a while but couldn’t find one that we liked in terms of the cut or material. Then we found Voler, or rather Voler found us. Using our Disruptive Coloration patterns, we made these dirt jerseys for men and women from our green or black pattern. They’re quick drying and wicking. The best part about this material is it’ll keep the sun off your arms in the summer and it’s lightweight enough to wear even in warmer months. The fit is less boxy, less baggy, more streamlined and less likely to flap in the wind or get snagged in your pack. If you like your jerseys bigger and baggier, we suggest ordering a size up. Note: getting our ENDO jerseys to match the Voler jerseys and vice versa was hard, while the tones are the same, the Voler jerseys came out a little lighter… They’re $75, with men’s and women’s sizes in each color, and in stock now.

We also re-upped some sizes in the Long Sleeve Winter Tee, added some Point Socks, sticker packs, and RUNE Stem Caps.

Head to our web shop to pick one up!

Philly Bike Expo 2018: Joe’s Last Breezer Built Lightning – Jarrod Bunk

Philly Bike Expo 2018: Joe’s Last Breezer Built Lightning
Photos and words by Jarrod Bunk

Nineteen ninety-two, SPDs were finally becoming accepted in lieu toe straps, Joe Breeze welded his last Lightning, and I was 8.  I didn’t have an appreciation for mountain bikes until later in life, but when I did I still remember reading about Joe.  Fast forward from twelve-year-old me to now, as I was loading some friends from Bicycle Revolutions into Philly Bike Expo, I got a text letting me know Joe brought this and was around, with the weather for Saturday looking a lot like rain I was happy to be able to spend a moment talking with Joe about this bike.

This is the last bike built entirely by Joe Breeze, this 92 Lightning was made with Ritchey Logic short butted tubing according to Joe. The headtube is the first iteration of Joe’s diffusion tubing which placed material around the headtube and tied back into the downtube with a gusset evenly distributing, or diffusing that force to the downtube.  This design allowed for use of the Lawwill Leader fork. Around this time Joe was in Moab experimenting with new ideas and concepts, one of them was the diffusion tubing concept, Lawill forks, and fairly modern (for the time) geometry.

Ritchey WCS components had just launched, so Joe built this bike with a smattering of those parts as well as his backdraft rims made by Ukai in Japan, there are even some early generation Paul Component levers that were used on the build. This bike was on display briefly before retiring into Joe’s collection, thanks to Joe for the time to talk about this awesome piece of MTB history.  I was able to meet someone who created my vehicle, my escape from daily routine, the entry drug to all other types of cycling for me, the mountain bike that certainly made PBE special.  Oh and according to Joe those zip ties belong there.
