Entry Level Fun on the State Thunderbird ‘Cross – Andre Chelliah

I see it all the time at the bike shop I work at. A young, college-aged kid comes into the store and strolls the aisles. They take in the smells, sights, and sounds of cycling. They have just seen the newest Svenness video and are ready and stoked to dip their toes into the timeless obsession that is bike racing. Then, they flip over a price tag and that excitement quickly turns into a nearly impossible math problem- how can I afford to pay for school as well as buy a quality bike to race on? This sentiment resonates strongly with me.

Being a student at The University of Texas and racing bikes on the weekends, there are times when I have to pick between textbooks and race fees. In an area where collegiate teams are not extremely supported or competitive in disciplines other than road racing, the best thing to do is pay your own way through the cross or track season. When Mehdi from State Bicycle Co asked me to shred on The Thunderbird, their $1000 singlespeed ‘cross bike, I was ecstatic to have time with a bike that could be a buy for new racers looking for something with quality, style, and affordability.

Repete Cycles: Grizzly Cross

Repete Cycles: Grizzly Cross

Repete Cycles have been featured here on the Radavist before. Their handmade in the Czech Republic, custom frames are simple machines with clean, austere lines. That is, until you start to really examine their cyclocross bike, the Grizzly. Subtle elegance can be found in the bent Columbus Spirit HSS stays and the matte brown finish. Details that make this bike as fierce as the alpha predator from which it formed its namesake.

Oddly enough, this Czech company will be at the North American Handmade Bicycle Show in Louisville this week and I’m not complaining! You can see more of Repete’s work at the NAHBS Exhibitor Feature website.

Above Category: Baum Turanti

There’s something so boss about an oversized titanium frame, especially with Baum‘s own unique selection. It looks like you can throw anything at it. Dirt rides down fire roads and cross races beware! This Turanti from Above Category fits the bill, right down to that blue paint and red anodized components. NAHBS-Bound Curtis Inglis Retrotec Backroads Bike

Inspired by the Bel Airs of the 1950’s, this backroads Retrotec is remarkably as easy on the eyes as I’d imagine it’d be on washboarded gravel roads. With clearances for a 45mm tire, this build included hydro Di2, the new Whisky No.9 CX fork with fender mounts and one of those nifty Brooks Cambium saddles.

You’ll also spy 2 winchester shells in the bar ends, with special meaning to the owner, Matt, who works for QBP. Those shells shot his late gramps’ ashes into the woods. To further up the ante, the seat pack is one his wife’s gramps used in the Korean War to hold ammo. Matt uses these items to remind him how bad-ass his grandparents were… and it kinda puts the pain encountered while pedaling a bike into perspective.

Thanks to Marty Wood for the beautiful photos and the crew from Angry Catfish for help on the build.

We’ll be seeing this bike at NAHBS next month! Til then, check out more below!

Riding the Charming Creek Trail on the New Santa Cruz Stigmata

Riding the Charming Creek Trail on the New Santa Cruz Stigmata

After settling in New Zealand, just outside of Nelson, we awoke to one of Mother Nature’s most memorable spectacles of the year in the form of a full-nuke sunrise. Skies were scorched, clouds were obliterated and as it began to mellow out, I put down my camera and began to grind my coffee beans in preparation for my morning ritual.

When I was first contacted for this media launch, I heard four words: Santa Cruz New Zealand. During what I call the slow and sleepy first of the year, news like this is exactly what I needed to kickstart my stoke for 2015. All I could think of were the sick trails that photographer Sven Martin had been sharing on his Instagram and what HouseMartin seems to be best known for: trekking into insane singletrack and ending rides at the beach.

A Resurrection of the Santa Cruz Stigmata Cyclocross Bike

Reportage

A Resurrection of the Santa Cruz Stigmata Cyclocross Bike

The original Stigmata marked its territory inside the well stacked lineup of Santa Cruz mountain bikes in 2007. Made in the USA from Easton EA6X tubing, these ultra light race machines were quite the hit. Although, at the time and into the near future, ‘cross was and would be going through some changes. Disc brakes, through axles, pressfit 30, tapered head tubes and other technological advancements were on the horizon, many of which being already implemented by various companies.

This constant evolution and the crossing over of Easton’s tubing no longer being available in smaller batches made the guys at Santa Cruz a bit weary. They decided to sit out from a few cross seasons…

Cyclocross World Championships – Tábor 2015

The first hint I was approaching Eastern Europe, was receiving a bath-size wet nap prior to takeoff on Air Dolomiti flight 1692 from Munich to Prague. Anyone who has ever whiffed a Bulgarian armpit or endured 34 rows of heavy built men who disavow deodorant can deduce how these would come in handy on a small airplane. As the pilot squeezed the throttle, our Embraer 195 headed east through light snow…

Bombtrack at the Bike Transalp

Bombtrack rider Stefan “Fish” Vis took to the 2014 Bike Transalp, a 7 day mountain bike stage race, totalling 600km with 19,000 vertical meters and 1,200 registrants. Unlike the rest of the field, Stefan was on a cyclocross bike, Bombtrack’s the Hook.

As you could imagine, a cross bike would be a better companion on the long road climbs up, but would require a bit of finesse on the downhill sections… Head over to the Vimeo page for more information on this race.

USAC Cyclocross Development Program: A Belgian Experience

This looks really great:

“The USA Cycling Cyclocross Development Program focuses on international training and racing with the aim to make an impact in World Cup and World Championship competitions. This short excerpt was filmed during the busy holiday race period (December 2014) and shows young American cyclocross racers (Jr Men, U23 Men, Women’s Youth) training near Vorselaar, Belgium and racing in Loenhout, Belgium.

Under the direction of Head Coach Geoff Proctor, the program achieved strong results in its build-up to the world championships in Tabor, Czech Republic in late January, 2015.”

Moots Routt Dirt Drop Expedition Bike

For 2015, Moots introduces a rather interesting model to their extensive lineup. The Moots Routt is made for expedition-style, ultra-lightweight bikepacking and backcountry touring. With disc brakes, 450mm chainstays and a nice bottom-bracket drop, this bike will sail with ease down fire and frontage roads and rip up singletrack. With clearance for up to a 44mm tire, it’ll take whatever you throw at it on trail and tarmac.

Since the Routt is titanium, it’s bound to offer a smoother ride than other materials and since it’s a Moots, it’s backed by their lifetime warranty. Made in Colorado where they know a thing or two about the wilderness.

Saila Bikes Titanium Cross with SRAM Rival

Reportage

Saila Bikes Titanium Cross with SRAM Rival

Simple, straight forward and built with no nonsense parts, this titanium cross is just one example of Lauren Trout’s frames built by hand in Austin, Texas at Saila Bikes. With so many people building with 44mm head tubes, curved stays and disc brakes, it’s nice to see one with a 1 1/8″ fork, straight as an arrow stays and canti brakes. That’s the beauty of custom thought: you get what you want.

Even with SRAM, ENVE and Chris King, you’re looking at a custom, handmade, titanium bike for under $5k as shown, which is a damn decent pricepoint for a frame that will most likely last you for decades and while others charge near that for a frameset, Lauren Trout learned how to weld and wield titanium at Seven Cycles.

Shooting builders in their workspaces is one thing, but their craftsmanship shines when you can photograph the finished product. Just look at those welds… stacking dimes.
