For Kyle’s bachelor party, a group of us planned a surprise trip to Baja for the Rosarito to Ensenada bike ride. It happened to be on Cinco de Mayo this year, which created a whole set of logistics we weren’t anticipating but all in all, the event and the party went as smooth as a track bike on those beautiful Baja roads!

Man, Ace from the Sleepers is on a roll with the good vibes videos. First, the Mavic project with Team Dream at the Tour and now the Sim Works Pop Up at GSC. Keep them coming dude!
Leave it to the Sleepers to document the haps in town including Cranksgiving, a food drive race thrown by the U Lock Mob (for the past 15 years!) with proceeds donated to Para Los Ninos.

“The Department of Art and Design at Azusa Pacific University presents High Water,a solo exhibition and large scale screen-printing workshop by Devon Tsuno. In his first body of work using risograph and screen-printing processes, High Water is an educational exhibition, inaugurating the first in a series of new Windgate Workshops hosted by the Department of Art and Design.
For over a decade, Tsuno has wandered the San Gabriel River drainage system, a stone’s throw from the APU campus, documenting the disjunctive economic and topographic relationship between streams and rock quarries. The product of this disjunctive relationship has created an area of “hard-rock” quarry mining water flowing through a “managed” natural landscape.
Tsuno will collaborate and create works with students, using a large-scale format 60 x 84 inch screen print, on handmade Japanese Kochi Mashi Washi paper. This will provide students the opportunity to learn through real world work experience. The new workshop is made possible with generous support from the Windgate Foundation and presents students with the unique opportunity to work side-by-side with professional artists like Tsuno, by collaborating, discussing and creating tangible works.”
We all ride bikes but it’s what we do to occupy ourselves in the meantime that defines us. Love this video!

It’s been almost a year since I went to France with Sean Talkington of Team Dream Bicycling Team, Ace Carretero from The Sleepers, Tebow the Enduro Pro (a.k.a Team Dream / Ringtail Intern) and Mavic Cycling to follow the Tour De France. This trip was life-changing for me and not a day goes by that I don’t think about something or a moment from this trip. It’s probably the fact that I have all of these French friends on Instagram now, or maybe it’s because I had the best meal of my life there at Miznon (that roasted cauliflower…I hear there’s one in NYC now!)
Whatever it is or was…holy cow…that was an amazing time!
Tourist de France

Roughly 8 or maybe even 9 years ago (it’s a bit fuzzy after all these years) I started working at a bicycle shop in LA called Orange 20. The shop manager at the time Mr. Kyle Kelley aka Trackosaurus Rex hired me to work in the new larger space they had just rented. Soon after that, Ace Carreterro aka The Sleepers came on board. Ace and I were both sales associates who ended up working pretty much the same weekly schedule with Kyle. I had very little in common with the two of them.
I would like you to close your eyes for a brief moment and imagine yourself sitting at home on a beautiful Summer evening and… oh wait, you can’t really read this with your eyes closed now can you. Let’s try this again. So, now that I have already wasted this much of your time, maybe just imagine (with your eyes open this time) that you get a call from someone asking if you would like to visit the Tour de France and ride your bike for a few weeks with “American Cyclocross Legend Tim Johnson” (he prefers to be called that to just plain old “Tim”.) Now imagine that while chasing the TdF you will also be traveling through the French countryside in a fully restored vintage Mavic Service Course Vehicle from 1974. Now please imagine that you have never been to the Tour de France but you have dreamed about it for years and now someone is offering you a Willy Wonka sized golden ticket in the form of an all expense paid trip. Mavic asked us to fly into France around the 8th Stage and create some videos for social media purposes. The goal was to ride with Go Pro Cameras and capture the energy of the tour to make 4-5 videos in a little over a week. That meant we would need a real life video editor, so I made a call to my buddy Ace Carretero and the trifecta was complete!
Last week, the Los Angeles cycling community lost one of its best. While I barely knew Richy, his impact on his loved ones was profound. The Sleepers put together an edit from a recent group ride to celebrate Richy’s life. See more at the #Richyeel hashtag. Ride in peace, brother.

“Who’s ready for the #goldensaddlecyclery chapter of the Swift Industries Campout this weekend in LA!?!? We know we are! We’d like for everyone to meet at the bike shop on Saturday, June 25th around 2 and we’ll be rolling out around 3. There will be short stops for food and maybe a drink while we meander to the base of the mountains. We’ll be then taking the Mt. Wilson Toll Road up to Henninger Flats for the night!!! There is a 3 1/2 mile dirt road up to the campground, so bring to bike you feel most comfortable riding off-road.”
Last Sunday, Ace from the Sleepers and I met up with volunteers from CORBA, MWBA and IMBA to work on the Ken Burton trail in the San Gabriel mountains. While most of our time was spent working, Ace got a good amount of video from the day, along with some great interviews…
“Corba’s Steve Messer leads the charge for the Ken Burton Trail Day. Watch Steve and good friends Robin and Michael as they lead the charge to get Ken Burton Trail back to its prime. With this trail opening, you will have the accessibility to connecting Brown Mountain to the Arroyo and Gabrielino trail. The Trail is slated to open up Spring of 2016.”

Ace is the Sleepers, a one man video production outfit in Los Angeles. You’ve surely seen his work on this site, right?
His Cannondale track has seen various permutations, as these things tend to do. The ones that are actually ridden, anyway. From drops to risers and now a super simple city bar, Ace’s bike has finally hit that sweet spot for cruising around Los Angeles. I’m pretty sure Kyle shot photos of it a few years back, yet I can’t dig anything up. Some notable notes: the off-center head badge, Phil Wood hubs, Sugino cranks, loved and weathered Flite with one of those damn hot Salsa stems.

Golden Saddle and the Sleepers pulled together a great little video showcasing the weekly LA River Camp Coffee meetup. Interested in going? LARCC meets every Wednesday morning at Sunnynook River Park, starting at 7AM.
Once upon a time there was a very wise Ent living in the Angeles Forest that stumbled upon a gentle being who looked to be riding a road bike up to Josephine saddle and around the back side of Strawberry Peak, a route only walked or traversed via Boneshaker. This man was warned of the hazards that lie ahead and the inherent danger he was putting himself in by riding tires so skinny into these parts of the forest, but yet he pushed ahead. The Ent sent word via crow to the small village living at what we call Red Box today, these people were asked to send a smoke signal when the man arrived in the village, but the man never did.
This old folklore was the inspiration behind the first half of the Mudfoot Fundo One Hundo, a 100-mile route through the Angeles forest showcasing the drastic changes of climate and terrain of Southern California. The elevation gained is the equivalent of riding from sea level to the top of Mt. Whitey. Many started the ride, and some finished, but everyone had fun.
