Rip Zinger for Stussy: West Americanized Tour

Stussy – Ripzinger West Americanized Tour from Stussy on Vimeo.

My good buddy Rip Zinger put together a rad little edit for Stussy promoting his book, entitled the West Americanized Tour. Here’s the information from the Stussy Vimeo page:

Tomonori “RIP” Tanaka’s rolling perspective through the United States is a modern day survey on street culture. His release of a book called Ripzinger West Americanized Tour is a collection of images that document RIP’s infatuation with the American dream. Skating on a Krooked Zip Zinger deck, hence the name, he explores the notion that photography can be more than simply photographing a subject. He proposes that the action of snapping a picture is closely aligned to the act of skateboarding. There is a moment when one must make a decision- when to take that jump, when to bail and when to stick your landing. Photography holds similar decisions. There are fractions of seconds when you must decide on the composition, light, expression and then click.

Remember the photo of Marco hopping Kiyo and Sexysushi while they were dry humping on a skateboard? Well, there’s another photo from that day below. Check it out!

Fixed Gear Freestyle’s Top 10 Photos of 2009

Well, 2009 is almost over and in the past year, we’ve seen people grinding handrails on fixed gears, doing bunnyhop barspins, wallrides, 1080 triple taps and numerous other tricks that have shaped the sport of this so-called “fixed gear freestyle” movement. Here are my Top Fixed Gear Freestyle Photos of 2009, in no particular order and in as least-biased of a position as I can possibly present.

Above: Tom LaMarche’s record-setting fixed gear nose manual at the Brooklyn Banks lead to many close-calls and near misses. Eventually he landed a buttery-smooth manual, across the entire box at the Banks. Be on the watch for this video clip in Bootleg Sessions 4.

LOOP Magazine has a nice two-page spread on Peel Sessions in their second issue. Takuya Sakamoto shot the pictures for the article and wrote the descriptions.

Tak comes out to Peel Sessions frequently and he’s seen it grow over the years. Now that there are more freestyle kids in NYC, the crowd has gotten to be a core group of riders. These guys are some of my best friends. Thursday nights is my favorite night of the week and Tak really captures the atmosphere in this article.

His photographs bring out the environment and grittiness of the Peel Sessions spot and it shows the various kinds of bikes that roll through on any given Thursday.

Toku’s toboggan

Once again, I’m posting pics from Shiba Friday in Tokyo. Sexysushi just upped some new shots and they’re really epic. I’m sure by now everyone’s sick of seeing these kickers, but whatever!

Nasty’s barspin

I have no idea how he pulled this off. Look at his hands!

Ted’s no-hander

… and once again, Super Ted with a nice no-handed air.

Prorry Get Off Your Damn Bike

Prorry get off your damn bike… Please

That joke will never get old! I think this was taken right before I bruised my heel and sprained my ankle the first night in Tokyo. Shiba Friday rules. We need to make a Peel Sessions kicker pair! Maybe that can be my project.

Reason #1 why I like gussets. This frame was destroyed by putting a BMW fork on it. The increased leverage from the longer ATC and general beefiness causes stress fractures and cracks at the HT / DT / TT cluster. Like when I toasted my Surly Steamroller last year.

At least he wasn’t hurt!

By the one, the only Sexysushi! See ya next week man!

Fixed Gear Fingerflip

When Sexysushi was over here last fall, he rolled out to Peel Sessions and snapped a few pics. I noticed today that he just uploaded this one of Wilis doing a laydown frame hop. Stuff like this reminds me of Gonz’s old video of him trying to kickflip a mountain bike. Anyone see that one?

This pic kinda looks like some throwback freestyle pic. Every time I see him do this, I cringe! My fat ass would snap my bike if I landed on it like this!

Edit: here’s that video! Thanks Andrew!
