No matter who I talked to in Pittsburgh and no matter what kind of bikes they were into, they all said “you HAVE to go to Kraynick’s bike shop”. So as I was making the rounds of shops in the Iron City, I swung by and man, it was something else.

When you open the front door, a loud buzzer rings and as your eyes adjust to the dark, you’re greeted with forks and drawers.

It’s kind of overwhelming at first but then you realize there’s an order to the chaos.

Sometimes I make reference to the “cave-like” feeling that some shops have. Kraynick’s is definitely one of those shops. Wheels and bike frames hang from the walls and ceiling.

Further back is the repair area and much like the front stock room, no horizontal surface is safe. Tools are everywhere.

The shelves are stocked and overflowing with parts and vintage boxes.

Down a narrow corridor is a series of repair stands where customers can work on their bikes.

Hanging from the walls are frames wrapped in cardboard and parts boxes on the floors.

The whole time people are walking in and out, Kraynick is working on repairs and talking to the customers.

He’s quite the character.

The ground floor is like an art installation. Upstairs are 1000’s of frames hanging from rafters as the entire building is engulfed with bicycle parts.

Outside, on the sun bleached facade is a sign.

And the gate is always drawn but the shop is open during normal shop business hours. If you’re ever in Pittsburgh, I highly suggest swinging through this shop. It really was something else! Check out a few more photos at my Flickr.
