Industry Nine’s New Hydra Hubs Have More Engagement and Less Noise
As you might have guessed by our banner ad this month, Industry Nine‘s had something up their sleeve for a little while now, re-designing their hubs into a new system called Hydra. These new hubs have 690 points of engagement, .52º between engagement, use independently-phased six pawl, 115 tooth drivering. This allows the Hydra system to hold engagement without damaging the hub or its internals, and best of all for most users I’ve conversed with, results in a beautifully subdued ring of the freewheel, rather than a swarm of angry hornets. I was able to put in a few miles on these new hubs, coming off of the older system on one of my hardtails and was able to tell the difference immediately. Check out a few more bits below.

Pottery, Stickers, and the Eastern Sierra Dream with Casey Clark
In an all too familiar series of small world events, I ended up at a small property about an hour north of Reno with Casey Clark. Casey is more known in this bike world for his side hustle of “Camp and Go Slow” stickers and patches, a visual play on the famous Campagnolo logo. Think of this as a Behind the Music if you will, well behind the sticker at least…

Matt’s Crust Bikes What-Would-Weigle-Do – Jarrod Bunk
Matt’s Crust Bikes What-Would-Weigle-Do
Photos and words by Jarrod Bunk
Matt’s brain – the owner/operator/designer for Crust Bikes – always has rats spinning on a hamster wheel. His affinity for the modern randonneur is apparent in a lot of the bikes he designs. What does a person who could essentially develop any conceivable bicycle that their hearts do, well they start with a simple question? What would Weigle do? Call it an homage or a cap nod to the Concours de Machines that Peter Weigle made a few years ago, the top tube and downtube are cut from longer butted tubes and only the thin-walled center section is used. Matt is a lighter rider so he can afford to run this type of tube set without worry. Fabricated by Darrin Larkin in LA, this is one of one and it’s a beautiful example of pushing the custom bike limit especially when built around a smaller rider.
The build kit is compiled of a lot of René Herse, Compass and of course Honjo fenders, as well as a Chris King Hub/Headset, Ti Record Post and a Berthoud saddle. Yeah, the bike is really light, of course, and there are ways to make it even lighter. Your eyes don’t deceive you there are no bolts in the rear posts, that’s cause the posts are flared. Does anyone have any guesses on the weight?

John’s Crust Bikes Dreamer is An All Road Light Tourer
I love bourbon but over a year and a half ago, I quit drinking, so my love for the brown Kentucky whiskey has been put on hold. Last year when I drove up to Portland to shoot the bikes of the Chris King Open House, the team there hooked me up with a set of their ultra limited Bourbon hubs and headset as a thank you for shooting 19 bikes for them. When this color was teased at NAHBS, almost three years ago, my head imploded. No matter what I could do, however, Chris King said that Bourbon wouldn’t be a color in their catalog. Something about not being able to get the color consistent. Bummer! They did however, have a small batch aging in their archives. When I was gifted the Bourbon parts, I had to make a bike worthy of such a kit.

An In-Depth Review of Revelate Designs’ New Dyneema Infused Lineup
Revelate Designs’ Newest Dyneema Infused Lineup
Words and photography by Spencer Harding with additional words by Lael Wilcox
When I heard that Revelate Designs was planning to release some new bags featuring fancy Dyneema fabrics, I was drooling. For those in the back that remember that pedestrian activity called backpacking, which was my background before bikepacking, you will remember salivating over gram-saving Cuben Fiber everything! I hope our new Dyneema overlords can forgive the reference to the previous name of the fabric, I just get a little sentimental. If you are curious about the name change, you can check this article or fall down a rabbit hole of the many applications of Dyneema fibers here. The most important takeaway is this: Dyneema is the world’s strongest fiber with superior strength to weight ratio, and for a set of bags designed for the express purpose of achieving a FKT (fastest known time) on endurance mountain bike routes, every ounce counts.

Wolf Tooth Components: Thru Axles and Trainer Caps
With thru axles an industry standard and most thread pitches have been established, Wolf Tooth felt it was time to throw their hat into the ring of axles but they added their own design twist.
“Knowing the pain of damaging their prized frames, they added end caps that would take the brunt of rock scrapes and crashes. And because to look good is to feel good, they decided to offer Axle Caps in eight anodized colors. Caps thread into a dedicated recess in the axle head and are easily replaceable or swappable with an 8mm hex key.
Because cold weather and short days are never far from a Minnesotan’s mind, they also created Trainer Caps to reduce barriers to winter workouts. Non-drive side Axle Caps are joined by drive-side plugs that can be installed or removed with ease to make the prospect of hopping on the trainer a little more bearable.”
