Tinker Bell is Going to Crush it at This Weekend’s SSCXWC

Photos by Josh Sawyer

Giro’s marketing manager, tandem slayer and all around bad-ass, Amanda Schaper wanted to add a bit of fairy dust to her already magical Tinker Bell costume for this weekend’s SSCXWC. She took her Empire VR90 ‘cross shoes and spent a few days masking off various layers of spray glue and sparkles. The end result is something else! If you’re going to the SSCXWC this weekend, make sure you give Tinker Bell a high five and a beer handup!

Check out more photos below of these awesome shoes below.

Bike Mag Limited Edition Giro Empire VR90 Razzle Dazzle Edition

I almost don’t want to show you these, because as you might have guessed, they were a gift to “friends and family” of Bike Mag. Ever since architecture school, where I explored WWI razzle dazzle camouflage and its potential for a building’s façade I fell in love with the seemingly random pattern language. Since then I’ve enjoyed seeing it appear literally all over pop culture and now, the cycling industry.

My favorite dirt shoes are the Empire VR90s and while I’ll always default on black, these shoes are a piece of art. I’m honored to own a pair so to the crew at Giro and Bike Mag, thanks for making them happen! Check out more photos below.

A Weekend in the Sierra Mountains at Giro Cycling’s Grinduro!

Reportage

A Weekend in the Sierra Mountains at Giro Cycling’s Grinduro!

When Joe Parkin approached Giro’s Dain Zaffke about a new race format a few years back, the initial reaction the two had was more than a chuckle, rather than any degree of seriousness but the seed had been planted…

Why not make a new race format? Part gravel grind and part enduro. Grinduro. You get the best of both worlds, competition and socializing on bicycles. A few segments would be timed: a fire road climb, a fire road descent, a road time trail and a singletrack descent. The event would prove to bring about a rather interesting dialog: what is the most diverse bicycle in your stable?

Grinduro Knuckle Gloves

I’m not sure if I’ve ever looked more forward to a cycling event as Grinduro. The format is sure to bring about competition, yet I doubt many people will be taking it seriously. Personally, I’m gonna be in party ride mode. Especially after these next few weeks!

To liven up the environ, Giro’s got a few fun products slated to launch at Grinduro and of which we already looked at in this year’s Interbike coverage. These knuckle gloves will be a hit, I’m sure…

You can still sign up for this event!

Giro’s New New Road is Made for Speed with the Chrono Collection

When Giro launched their New Road apparel line a few years back, they brought in their take on what road cycling wear could become and now, their Chrono Collection addresses the other side to that coin for apparel.

The Chrono collection was launched yesterday and I’ve been reading up on it at their site. My take-away here: the Chrono Collection offers affordable and functional pieces for men and women but the most significant designed piece is the Chrono Expert Halter Bib for women. That’s innovative design.

Check out more at Giro and I’m curious to hear your thoughts on this.

Giro Brings MIPS to the SYNTHE

Last year at the Tour, Giro unveiled the SYNTHE helmet. A lightweight, aerodynamic, well-ventilated helmet with a clean, minimal profile. This year, the SYNTHE got safer with MIPS, or multi-directional impact protection system. MIPS is the by-product of the science behind safety, which in my opinion is more important than any speed or aerodynamic efficiency testing you’ll read online. Another factor to consider is looks. There are colors to match your desired look, from black to fluorescent. The SNYTHE looks good, which will make you want to actually wear your helmet more.

See more on the SYNTHE with MIPS at Giro and check these out at your local dealer in the Fall.

Grinduro Confirms Ray Barbee and Mike Watt For Music

Hopefully by now you’ve heard of Grinduro, Giro’s two-day event in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Part gravel grinder, part enduro and all fun. Co-sponsored by SRAM, all proceeds from the event will benefit the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship. Thanks to Ray Barbee and Mike Watt, the October 10th event just got a lot more rockin’…

In addition to the music and the racing, Grinduro will feature displays of art and hand-built bicycles, and excellent food from former Clyde Common chef Chris DiMinno of Gourmet Century fame. Featured builders include Black Cat, Blue Collar Bikes, Caletti, Falconer, Retrotec, Steve Rex, Soulcraft and others. There will also be displays of handmade creations from Paul Component Engineering, White Industries, Strawfoot and Traugott Guitars alongside art from Geoff McFetridge and others.

Caletti Giro Grinduro Edition Titanium Cyclocross Bike

Reportage

Caletti Giro Grinduro Edition Titanium Cyclocross Bike

October will be here before you know it and with it, comes Grinduro, a different kind of bike race. After my pre-ride photoshoot, one thing became evident: the best rig for this race is a cross bike. Don’t even try to ride a road bike, because you’ll be walking and if you ride a MTB, you might clock in a better time on the descents, but there’s a 25 mile climb.

When Giro announced the Grinduro, Santa Cruz framebuilder John Caletti of Caletti Cycles began working on a cyclocross bike for the event. With bent seat stays, clearances for a 40mm tire, disc brakes and no-rattle housing, this bike is the ideal weapon for a day filled with Sierra Nevada gravel and crag.

My favorite detail on this frame in particular however is the Geoff McFetridge artwork. The evil mountain awaits and Grinduro is coming… Best get your rig ready.

Giro Cycling’s Grinduro Timed Gravel Race in Sierra Nevada

Reportage

Giro Cycling’s Grinduro Timed Gravel Race in Sierra Nevada

The cycling industry is a competitive place. With mountain bikers clamoring over Enduro, the road and dirt industry has its sights on gravel grinder races. As the name implies, the Grinduro is a mix of the two. A mix, but a whole lot more…

Giro’s Grinduro is an entire weekend event that unfolds in the town of Quincy, California. A place that can get quite warm in the summer, so luckily, the event takes place in October. Participants will be able to camp at the fabled Quincy Campground, be fed by Chris King’s Gourmet Century, enjoy beer from Sierra Nevada brewery and enjoy music from live bands.

The format of the race includes timed climb segments, timed descent segments and a ripping 12-mile long singletrack ender. The intent is to chat leisurely in between segments, get to know your fellow racers, enjoy delicious food along the way and then give your all during the timed sections. Once you’re done, finish up the night at the campsites with a massive shindig.

The following Gallery was taken on the Giro Grinduro course, a 65 mile long mixed terrain route with approximately 9,000′ of elevation. These roads are some of the most beautiful in the area and as you will see, will not disappoint… Will you Grinduro?

Registration is open now, so head to the Grinduro site for more information.
