Più di Pegoretti: Design Students Products
“Enthusiasm for cycling, commitment to your own work and the openness to learn new things from each other — that is the bond that unites the students from the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design and Dario Pegoretti, the master builder of top-quality, individual frames for racing bikes. For weeks he and the students wrestled with ideas and plans — thinking, drawing and designing. The many ideas finally gelled into a singular project: Più di Pegoretti.”
Anyone who’s attended design school, can attest to at least one professor who has singlehandedly changed their outlook on the world. I’d imagine Pegoretti would be such a professor. Check out the Più di Pegoretti project and see what his students came up with this semester!

Florian’s Troica Disc All Road
When in Berlin, photograph German frame builders, right? Troica Cycles is a Berlin-based builder, specializing in tig-welded, steel cyclocross and road bikes. While their website’s offerings look beautiful, Florian‘s bike is a little different. This all-road, light tourer, randonneur, or what have you, features a beautiful segmented fork with a custom rack to boot. Its paint job is accented by the sour apple Chris King, ENVE M50 wheels and a bright turquoise Chris King headset. This bike is colorful, yet subdued at the same time…
Today I got to spend four hours with Florian and his Troica, admiring its subtle style and capabilities. Check out more for yourself in the Gallery!

Tannenwald Luchs 29’r Loaded with Tune Components – Kevin Sparrow
This Tannenwald Luchs 29 was hanging at the Tune Factory and I just had to shoot it. From what I gather, Tannenwald is a local favorite. Honestly, I didn’t know much about the brand besides the frames being built in Germany. I reached out to to them and got a little bit of information about the company.
Tannenwald is Rüdiger (Rudi) Kupper and Stefan Lichtner. The frames are all handcrafted by Stefan in Palatinate, Germany. “Back to the roots” refers to their “commitment to the finest steel construction and craftsmanship”. The LUCHS 29 was inspired by a 42km long MTB trail near the builder’s house. This LUCHS is built with Tune components and has the Schwarzwald-themed paint scheme.
I love how much this bike represents the region, all the way down to the Tune Componentry. She looks like quite the ripper if you ask me.
Fairwheel Bikes in the US stocks all of Tune’s componentry. If you see something you like, they probably have it in stock. If they don’t, they can order it for ya!

Born in the Black Forest at Tune – Kevin Sparrow
With a number of high-end component manufacturers and brands to choose from, I find it helpful to narrow the decision by knowing where and how the products are made. I’ve ridden the Schwarzwald Giro the last three years and each year I’ve wanted to visit the Tune factory, but never could until just a few weeks ago.
The story of Tune started in 1988, when Uli Fahl lived in Munich. He wanted to lighten his mountain bike and began prototyping parts in his kitchen. In 1989, the company was established and Tune’s first product, a lightweight quick-release skewer, was born. Fast forward to today and Tune has a portfolio of different lightweight components for road and mountain bikes. And now, nestled on the edge of the Black forest, it’s near some of the best testing grounds in the world.

ERTZUI FILM: Light Wolf
It’s always a good morning when ERTZUI FILM sends over a video!
“Almost 5 Years ago, we made a portrait about a certain Felix Wolf – a shining new prospect in the world of custom wheel building. Flawless accuracy and a determination to absolute perfection made him stood out from the rest and soon, LIGHT WOLF became a trademark for custom wheel building on a totally new level.
Not much has changed since, although it was time for a revisit.
LIGHT WOLF is not a one-man-show anymore, he shares a workshop in a historic industrial area with his friends of VELOHELD and he got himself a new safe. On May 25th 2015, LIGHT WOLF celebrates its 6th anniversary and his future looks bright.”

Although it’s far from the spartan life of East Berlin, living in the west part of town is not always easy. The instability in world politics is constantly reminding the citizens of how vulnerable their city is. West Berliners stoically maintain a spirit of normality in their isolation. Their celebrations and manifestations of life before the wall serve as rituals that keep the absurdity of the surrounded city at bay…

The 2014 Schwarzwald Giro – Kevin Sparrow

Most of us got a good night sleep in our camper. The nights in Freiburg are chilly and it doesn’t start to warm up until the sun peeks over the tree line later in the morning. Everyone met at Biosk at 9:30, for a planned roll out at 10. It would have been nice to get a decent breakfast but Josh and I downed a bowl of cereal and I took a nutrition bar for a reserve. Others stuffed their jerseys full of snacks. We all knew we had a long day ahead of us…

Freiburg is a quaint little town nestled on the edge of the Black Forest near the French/Swiss border. The city is rich in historic buildings and churches. The streets are covered in cobbles, train tracks and tiny canals on the sides of the streets. Bike lanes are everywhere, cyclists and tourists fill the streets for most of the day. Portus Cycles: The Greenhorn
With all the framebuilding talk today, how fitting is this video featuring the inception of a Portus Greenhorn. This was one of my favorite things at Eurobike, but don’t be too quick to jump to conclusions, for things aren’t always what they seem! Make sure to watch the whole video and here’s the scoop:
“A short docu of the building process of the first Greenhorn. Handmade in Germany – handmade in Pforzheim. The frame is made of Reynolds 725 steel and fillet brazed. The parts are from Tune and Schmolke Carbon.”
