Avalanche Cycles Shop Visit: Vive L’Innovation à Paris

Earlier this month, Josh stopped over in Paris, France, following his time in the UK covering Bespoked Handmade Bike Show. During his visit to the City of Lights, he visited multiple bike shops and fabricators. First up in a series of reports from his time there, Josh checks in with Marie and Laurent of Avalanche Cycles, who take an innovative approach to building bicycles and components from steel, stainless, and titanium.

Dirt drops are mentioned periodically here on The Radavist, usually in the context of a modern hardtail, rigid mountain bike, or adventure touring bike. But where did this terminology come from, and how are vintage dirt drops wildly different from what we have today? Using his 1983 Steve Potts as a platform for discussion, John unfurled the unique history behind this bike and looked at a proper 1980s dirt drop setup. Let’s check it out.

Hannah Builds Her Chumba Cycles Race Bike

Chumba Cycles sent over a rad video showcasing its Chumba Ultra Race Team athlete Hannah Simon as she builds her bike for the 2024 gravel and bikepacking racing season.

In late December of 2023, Hannah joined Chumba’s production staff as a production assistant. She quickly grew her framebuilding skillset. This year she fabricated her Sendero Titanium MTB and Terlingua Steel gravel bikes.

First, she took on the AMR (Atlas MTN Race) in Morocco with the Sendero, coming in 3rd place over the 1300km race. Next up was Midsouth (3rd SS), the East TX Showdown 400 (1st place), DOOM 400 (2nd), and the inaugural Rule of Three 200. Later this year Hannah will be traveling to Kyrgyzstan to race the 1938km Silk Road Mountain Race!

We’re elated that the Builders for Builders has returned for 2024. This fundraising effort benefits the Sierra Butte Trail Stewardship (SBTS) – hosts of the Lost and Found gravel race and the Downieville Classic. Lorenzo’s Custom Pedretti Pista: A San Diego Spritz

The following is a story of friendship, art, and feelings. It’s the story of a custom Pedretti Pista Spritz with a special appearance from a legendary Brian Baylis-painted Holland Cycles track bike.

San Diego, California has a rich cycling history. The city and surrounding region have varied terrain and year-round temperate weather, inviting a range of cycling disciplines from track to mountain. While the 1970s and 80s were perhaps the city’s golden age for road and track racing, strong local contingencies keep the legacy alive.

Our friends Jon Pucci and Lorenzo Romagnoli are two such aficionados. Collectors, tinkerers, artists, and (some would say) style icons, the duo share an affinity for modern classics and often focus their passion on restoring neglected frames to their former glory. And sometimes, they take on new builds…
