I Hope Your Weekend Was Rad

Sorry for the lack of updates this weekend. Tracko’s been in town and all we’ve been doing is riding and partying. Hey, it was the weekend, right? He heads back to Cali tomorrow and regular posting will commence.

In the meanwhile, I hope you had a great weekend.

Recent Roll: The 128

This is by no means a recent photograph. It’s from a ride I did in California with the Giro New Road team. Highway 128 snakes its way through the Navarro River Redwoods State Park and when the road aligns with the setting sun, you get these great slivers of light coming through the trees.

It’s been too long since I’ve been in California. After two months, I’m jonesin’.

LA Night Ride

LA Night Ride

No trip to Los Angeles is complete without at least one night ride with the Golden Saddle Cyclery guys. During my last visit, Dave, Kyle, Ty, Ace, Jeff from All City and I went out on a Griffith ride, through the hills and up to the Hollywood sign for some beverages. At that point in the trip, we were all toast, especially Jeff, who had just come off a 24 hour flu. At least he got some more photos to use for the #partybrand that is All-City

As “hoody hooooo” echoed through the night, we rolled home along the bike path.

Of Usability and Accuracy

Of Usability and Accuracy

When I buy a new camera, I like to use the weeks spent here in Austin to work out its nuances and familiarize myself with its basic operations. There’s nothing worse than missing a shot because you’re fumbling with the lens, or trying to be sharp with focus. A rangefinder is still new to me, having used SLRs more, I’m used to seeing through the lens for focus. You set up your shot, make focus and what you see is what you get. But not with a rangefinder.

I’m much faster this way and yet there’s something about the ergonomics of the smaller, rangefinder body that makes the learning curve very shallow. After two rolls, the camera feels better in my hands. The lenses move with ease and I don’t second guess myself. I’m planning a big trip in March and this will be my primary camera of choice, along with the Hasselblad.

But first, I have to get this camera’s use dialed in. So I shoot what I know. Faces, favorite places and subjects that I’m comfortable with. Because when you shoot a photo of even the simplest thing with a Leica, it just looks so good. Now if I can just get some decent panning shots!

Jake Ricker: Amalgamate and Born to Die Zines

Jake Ricker reached out to his photography buddies to pull together a new 70-page zine out called Amalgamate. The photos are great and the proceeds are going to help cover his wife’s medical bills after she was attacked by three dogs on a hike last year.

Some of the friends that submitted photography and art are:

Dustin Klein, Damian Riehl, Kyle Kelley, Jason Yim, Dylan Bigby, Kyler Martz, Matt Lingo, Terry Barentsen, Chas Christiansen, Crihs Thormann and Aron Dubios.

He is also still selling his other 60 page zine called Born To Die of his photography. $12 each or $20 for both. To help out and order PayPal $12 or $20 as a “gift” to jakericker@gmail.com. And make sure to include your address.

Recent Roll: Base Miles

We’ve had cool mornings here in Austin and the low-lying fog has been an eerie companion on rides. It totally changes the arid landscape. I hope everyone is finding the time to get in base miles.

One of My Favorites

One of My Favorites

I’ve been cleaning out my hoard drives and trying to pull together a 35mm zine (hey, who isn’t doing one?) when I came across this oldie of Puckett. This was from one of the first Recent Roll posts here in Austin.

Texas Cyclocross State Championships

Texas Cyclocross State Championships

Last weekend was the Texas Cyclocross State Championships in Fredericksburg, Texas. Unlike the last cross races I’ve shot, it was bright and sunny outside, so I decided to shoot with my new Leica M7 and Hasselblad, rather than the 5D. I’m digging a lot of these, check them out yourself!

Total Randomness

Total Randomness

November and December have been a lot busier than I anticipated. Usually, it’s my time to get back into a daily routine of riding, riding, riding but I found myself traveling more and more these past few weeks. This Recent Roll is a series of snapshots taken in Portland, Austin and Los Angeles during that time. Shot with my Contax G2 and Kodak E100VS. Enjoy.

Recent Roll: Lauren’s Icarus Frames Porteur

One day, Lauren said to me “I wish my commuter had gears”. For someone who loves supporting his frame building buddies, it was like music to my ears, so I contacted Ian at Icarus Frames right away. After some measurements and a lot of back and forth, we had an idea what to build Lauren. The end product was a low-trail touring bike that could be set up like a porteur for now and easily converted into a road-drop touring bike. As always, Ian provided some of the cleanest fillets in the business and now we just have to decide on a paint job.

I shot some photos with my Contax G2 and Kodak E100VS before sending it off to Bryan at Fresh Frame. Check out more below!

Test Roll Contax G2

Test Roll Contax G2

I recently got a screaming deal on a Contax G2 with the Zeiss 45mm and 28mm lenses. The 45mm is arguably the best piece of glass, ever and the Contax G2 has been hailed as the best rangefinder ever, even beating out the Leica models (so they say).

While some will argue a rangefinder should be MF, I kind of enjoy the AF. Once the camera came in, I headed out into the night to capture some of the vibes on the East Side of Austin. Later, I brought it to Colorado Bend State Park on a day trip with my parents, who were visiting from North Carolina. The results from my first test roll of 3200 Delta black and white resonated through my scanner yesterday.

Check out some wonderful randomness in the Gallery and I can’t wait to shoot more with this camer.
