Phil Wood Passed Away

84-year old Phil Wood ( @PhilWoodCo ) passed away today on his farm in Baxter, Iowa. Since 1971, the Phil Wood Company specialized in hub and other bicycle component manufacturing. In 1991, he sold the company to Peter Enright and other investors. Most of us first came to know Phil Wood’s products through the popularity of their track hubs. Reliable, handmade in the US, hubs that set the standard for modern wheel builds. Let’s all observe a moment of silence today for Phil Wood. His contributions to the bicycle industry are undeniable.

Indy Fab: The 40th Anniversary Phil Wood Ti Track Bike

The guys at Indy Fab have quite the stable brewing for the 2010 NAHBS. They were commissioned by the team at Phil Wood to fabricate 41 (#00 – #40) limited-edition titanium track bikes in honor of Phil Wood’s 40th anniversary. There are tons of Phil Wood logos cut out of literally every component on this bike. It’s really over-the-top. Luckily for those of you who will not be in attendance at the NAHBS, they snapped some shots of bike #00 before packing it up.

Phil Wood ISO Track Hubs Update

Well, here they are. Straight from the Phil Wood website via their Twitter account.

Our ISO track hub is now available! The front hub has a larger flange than our high-flange track hub, and the rear has 120mm spacing and in 32 or 36 spoke hole configurations. Provided with the rear hub are six Phil Cog retention bolts. They are Grade 8/Class 8.9 with a minimum tensile strength of 150,000 psi.

The hub is offered in a single-fixed, double-fixed, fixed-freewheel, and fixed-freewheel (White Industries freewheel-specific) configuration. Cogs are available only in 1/8″ and in 16-19 teeth. We strongly recommend using Phil ISO track cogs with our bolts due to bolt fitment.

These are currently not listed in our web store.

Please call us at (408) 298-1540 to order.

Phil Wood Limiteds

You gotta hand it to Phil Wood. Not only do they make some of the most sought-after track hubs on the market, they have managed to continuously make their hubs in the US. Even in the horrible economy, the people at Phil Wood are moving forward.

I’m not usually one to get all hyped up on limited bike parts but these hubs look pretty nuts. I had a set of Bayliss Wiley hubs on my Higgins Path Racer and have always loved the old 1950’s hub designs. Large, weight-reducing holes cut in the flanges just make a hub look extra sexy. Now I’m not so sure these hubs are as light as the Wiley hubs, but they sure do look pretty.

Affinity got in a few sets of silver and purple last week. I snapped a quick pic after picking up a wheelset. Excuse my fingerprints.

The first weekend of June saw another lap around the sun for the Handmade Bicycle Show Australia and while there was no blowing out of the candles, the show turned five this year. This edition was once again hosted in the incredible Seaworks building in Williamstown. Overlooking the city skyline, Melbourne looks close enough that you could touch it. Massive shipping vessels bring goods into the port, making a spectacular backdrop for a celebration of the craft and culture of the Handmade Bicycle. Made in Philly: Shop Visit at La Marche Bicycle Co

Longtime readers of this website will know Tom La Marche, primarily due to his fame during the popularity of fixed gear riding in the early 2000s. More recently, Tom has pursued his love of framebuilding under the banner of La Marche Bicycle Co part-time while working as a stunt man for various Hollywood movies and TV shows. For the past few years, he’s been working on getting his workshop dialed in and making bikes for a select clientele. While in town for the Philly Bike Expo last year, I caught up with Tom at his new shop space and photographed his personal Town & Country gravel bike. Let’s take a look below!

“Long time no see!” piped Dustin from a leather chair near a window with grey morning light pouring in through the huge windows of Roam Industry, a backcountry focused bike, climb, and ski shop in Monticello, UT. He sips his coffee as we catch up and listen to Zeppelin. His kid has teeth coming in, and he is a small business owner in a small town. He is tired, but not too tired to laugh, talk, and show me around the shop.

Photos and words by Jarrod Bunk

Sometime after Red Hook Crit this year, Jocelyn Tipton had her race bike stolen, luckily for 2019, they found a new ride, this Pratt.  Joining Dani Moreshead and Sam Fox this year for a new all-women team Pratt/Phil Wood will be competing at Red Hook Crit Brooklyn and Milan, Mission Crit, Redbull Last Stand, and a few others in preparation for 2020 fixed gear nationals.

The build features some nice touches from Phil Wood, including their hubs, headset, and seat collar as well as tires from Challenge and rims from Princeton Carbonworks.  The paint was a mix of spray-bike and the graphics were designed by Still Life.  One thing for sure this bike will turn your head at breakneck speed during the races, so take a moment and check the gallery above and good luck to the new team!

My Geekhouse Woodville Update: Handsome Mud Butler Fenders and Compass Barlow Pass Tires

Fenders aren’t exactly my favorite bicycle accessory. Granted I live in Texas where it “never rains” or so it didn’t really until this year. We’ve had a very wet spring and summer, resulting in a lot of unexpected rain riding. So much so that I finally broke down and decided to ditch the big, plump tread of my Bruce Gordon Rock n Roads for some fenders and the biggest tire I could find that would fit…
