Steady stayin’ salty. That’s the shitty thing about snow in cities. You wash your bike off each night and the next day, it’s a salty mess again. It’s usually not an issue for aluminum frames, but a steel bike (with a steel drivetrain) can get crusty. I usually overhaul the bb and cranks once a week to keep everything in working condition.
If you’ve been reading this blog for any length of time, then you know that Darkthrone is one of my favorite metal bands. Their work spans almost 20 years. While they started out as a death metal band, Darkthrone quickly became synononymous with the growing Norwegian genre of music called “black metal”. Multiple other people have worked with the band, but Fenriz and Noctorno Culto have been there from the beginning.
Nocturno Culto has been busy with Darkthrone’s current work and his side-project, Sarke, which is one of my favorite 2009 releases. To call Darkthrone “black metal” at this point in their career is questionable but with a logo designed by Tomas Lindberg of At the Gates, Darkthrone’s iconic presence in the world of metal is undeniable. As a side-note; if you’ve seen the Revival, you’ll recognize the song I used in my section embedded below.
When I saw this Bike Jerks shirt just now, it immediately made me think of Darkthrone.

After a two-year hiatus and a mission to find a new event location, Ruta Del Jefe relocated from Appleton-Whittell Research Ranch in Arizona, US, to Cuena Los Ojos in Sonora, México. The 2024 event was nestled in the hills of Cuenca Los Ojos conservation ranch just south of the Arizona border, straddling the line between biomes, states, and countries.
While the event was, of course, a weekend full of riding bikes across beautiful terrain, it was also infused with workshops, informative presentations, bird walks, dancing, coffee, chocolate, and incredible local food.

To do this, we look at the page views for each and every Beautiful Bicycles gallery. Then we look at comments and internet chatter. Once we cull all this data, we’re left with a solid list of bikes. We love compiling this data as it helps us determine what bikes you like to see the most and thus, informs what bikes we document in the future.

“It’s just a bike.” The late Bruce Gordon built bicycle frames to enhance his customers’ lives. Through all my interactions over the years, up until his passing in June of 2019, he would take praise for his work, but would always end the conversation with: “It’s just a bike.”
To talk about this bike in particular, you first have to know Bruce. Who he was, his ethos, the mythos, and what he brought to the “g” word: gravel. Bruce was making fat-tire road bikes for a long time. Long before many. He developed tires, toe clips, and helped foster an entire movement of makers in the Petaluma, California area and beyond.
But just like that, he was gone, and he left behind a legacy…
