Chris King Brings Purple Back

If you’re like me, every time a purple Chris King headset pops up on eBay, you watch it, patiently. Most of the time, the auctions close out too high, or it’s for a 1″ threadless. So imagine my surprise when Chris King handed off a purple 1 1/8″ Sotto Voce headset to me last week. These are a very limited run and can only be picked up at their Eurobike 2012 booth.

Here’s more information:

“We have something special up our sleeve for Eurobike 2012. Come to the Crema Cycles outdoor booth at this years show and visit the Chris King product bar where we will be hand-assembling components before your very eyes.

Chris himself might be the one to put the finishing touches on your hub, headset, or bottom bracket. As if this weren’t reason enough to pay us a visit we will be offering a limited amount of purple anodized shells and cups. These purple parts are exclusive to this years show and are sure to go fast. In addition to purple we will also be offering black and red options.

GET THEM AT EUROBIKE #FG-A5/5″

Who knows, maybe if there’s enough interest, we’ll see the return of the purple!

Chris King: 2011 Commuter Challenge

Chris King has a rather unique way of rewarding their Portland workers who commute by bike into work each day. They offer up cafe credits and even PTO for when you ride in. At the end of the year, they tallie up all the points and credits, which you can see here:

“The results from our commuter rewards efforts have been calculated for 2011. Another great year of promoting bicycle transportation and even better rewards from our boss, Chris King. The extra days off are always nice but it’s those cafe credits that make each commute day even more sweet.

2011 Commuter Rewards totals for Chris King Precision Components & Cielo Cycles:
17,818 total commutes by bicycle
136,419 miles ridden
$27,846.95 in cafe credits earned
216 days of Paid Time Off awarded”

So sick.

This trip to Portland has been special. Not many people get escorted from the airport and brought directly to the Chris King facilities. When I landed, Chris DiStefano picked me up and gave me a tour of the shop. We saw where the round stock aluminum came in and where it was cut down. I got to over see the machining floor and where the hub shells and headsets were assembled and finally, Chris showed me Cielo‘s facilities.

In an age of overseas manufacturing, Chris King still proudly makes all their products here in the States, from materials made in the States.

Crossing the Big Empty: Confessions from Chris Burkard on the Trans-Icelandic Bikepacking Route

Editor’s intro: I’ve long been inspired by the work of Chris Burkard, particularly his work in Iceland, so when I saw he had taken up bikepacking and was about to embark on a crazy tour across Iceland’s interior, I reached out to see if he’d be willing to share his story. Read on below for an intro by Chris and an interview…

God’s Country Day 1:  Captain’s Log

The pain felt like a feathery flame, arriving fierce and lacing itself into the layers of fibers in my quads.  I bend over my bars to stretch and shake the lactic acid bath pooling in my legs. My chest strains to keep air in my lungs when it desperately wants to escape.  I glance around to see if the others show similar conditions to help calm my mind. Although I had fared well earlier in the day when we were sticking to the fire roads, now the steep grade of this narrow, rutted trail has me feeling worked.  I’m barely keeping my inner dialogue silenced. The steeper and higher we climb up the pass, the weaker my mental fortitude becomes.

Here in the hallowed halls of the big red ‘S’; you know, the Death Star of the cycling world… you might be surprised to see there are some real people roaming around. Real people that are, first and foremost, big fans of bikes.

People like my buddy John Friedrich, the only man I know who would happily talk about the different weights of DOT brake fluid and what they offer to the rider, literally, until you’d choose water boarding over continuing the conversation… Or like our mechanic Patrick “Tree” Miller who seems like someone delivered to earth in one of those rescue pods shot through space as the planet Krypton went through nuclear collapse. Patrick is the NICEST most willing to help person I’ve ever met… and yes, he is a bicycle mechanic! How about that?
