Viral Bikes kicks off the season with its Dérive CR, a 4130 triple-butted chromoly version of the titanium hardtail with a Pinion gearbox John reviewed last year…
The Dérive CR is a carbon copy of the titanium version but made from steel. It has the same geometry, same Pinion Gearbox and the same lifetime warranty all Viral frames have. The Dérive CR can be outfitted with a color-matched Viral Carbon Boost fork or a Rock Shox Pike Select with 120 mm of travel.

Geometry
Slight adjustments were made to accommodate only 29er wheels since John looked at the Dérive last year, including a lower bottom bracket and increased reach.
It clears 29 x 2.6” tires, making it a great bike for day rides or multi-day tours. For the first time in the company’s history, the Dérive CR can be purchased as a frame only, in case you have an existing gearbox you’d like to keep using with the new frame. Of course, the frame can also be purchased with either a mechanical or Smart.Shift gearbox, and now has the option of a color-matched Carbon Boost fork or Rock Shox Pike Select.
Complete bikes have an amazing build spec, including the above-mentioned options of forks, plus a PNW cockpit and dropper post, Ergon saddle and grips, and Industry 9 1/1 Enduro wheels to compliment the Vittoria 29 x 2.6” tire tread.
The retail price for the frame only starts at $1695 and goes up from there, depending on spec. Complete bikes start at $5895 for a Smart.Shift rigid bike or $5995 for the Pike Select Smart.Shift bike. Manual gearboxes are available for the complete bike; please reach out to Viral for pricing.
Pre-orders are available now from Viral Bikes and require a 50% deposit. Pre-order customers will receive 10% off the retail price. Delivery of the frame kits and complete bikes is expected in August this year.
