Kyle’s Gilmour Track Bike

Reportage

Kyle’s Gilmour Track Bike

As someone who only rides bikes that were made in the States, Kyle‘s collection of steeds is quite impressive. Calfee road bike, Riv Saluki, S&M BMX, FBM Sword, Santa Cruz Stigmata cross and this Andy Gilmour track bike. When he picked this up from Anthony at Velo Cult, the allure of brakes and bottle cages took over. When all you do is climb on your track bike, hoods are the best thing you could ask for. The 44:17 gearing is ideal for the hilly rides of Los Angeles and tackling Griffith Park with ease… and the Campagnolo C-Record Pista group is just an added bonus.

Rapha: Self Survey

I’ll always say I don’t like posting photos of myself, but I can’t pass up this one. A few weeks back, I met up with George Marshall from the Albion to get my portrait taken for the Rapha Survey. But what bike? My Icarus of course…

Moth Attack

Reportage

Moth Attack

Moth Attack is one of the most unique builders I’ve ever met and not just because it’s owned and operated by a woman. I spent a few hours visiting Megan in her commercial live work space in Los Angeles, touring her facilities that are literally feet above where she sleeps at night. This is the ultimate bike apartment, where everything from racing bikes to commuters and mountain bikes hang from the walls but to add to the mix, Megan designs and fabricates custom bicycles inside the space.

Sharing the loft is Jack, a track cyclist and mechanic. Both Megan and Jack have seperate, lofted studio spaces where they work. See for yourself below…

5th Floor: Hame

The 5th Floor guys just posted this new video:

“‘Hame’ is the fruits of a great few days spent with Angus Sung in my hometown and the surrounding Glasgow area. Hame follows myself and James Wright as we track out of Glasgow and into the Campsie glens climbing for the majority of the ride. The filming of it had a little more poignancy since its likely to be my last time at hame or in the UK for a while and I really appreciate Angus capturing that. It’s also a great opportunity to introduce James Wright who will be repping the 5th in Scotland. I did a brief bike check on his Kagero some time ago but you can expect to see and hear more and more on James as he flys the banner for us. Big shout out to Chris for being the driver on this one!”

50th Anniversary Paramount Track

Reportage

50th Anniversary Paramount Track

The customers and their bikes that walk in and out of Golden Saddle Cyclery amaze me. One minute, a custom Moots, the next, an Indy Fab cross bike. It never really gets old but you quickly adapt to seeing Beautiful Bicycles everywhere you look. Then a gem like this rolls into the doorway. A 50th Anniversary Schwinn Paramount track. These frames were made at the Waterford facilities in the late 80’s and it shows. The finely-crafted lugwork, anniversary logos and bright jade paint make this track frame one Beautiful Bicycle. I took it outside, in the last moments of sunlight and tried to capture all these details.

DJ’s Mash Histogram

Reportage

DJ’s Mash Histogram

Meeting viewers in person and seeing their bikes is one of my favorite things about traveling. This morning, DJ rolled into GSC on his Cinelli Mash Histogram and I tried to quickly sneak in photos before he noticed his bike was gone. It didn’t work because like a good owner, his eyes were on his bike the whole time. Who can blame him? Especially with the parts list…

Elkabikes: Columbus MAX Beast

Oh man. I love me some Columbus MAX. I’ve got a track bike made from it and even my road bike’s seat tube is MAX. At this point, I’ve seen just about every resolution for the MAX top tube. This bi-oval beast is either capped in an awkward lug, or the seat stays wrap around it but I’ve never, ever seen a detail like that. Why hide something when you can express it?

That’s not the only detail expressed here. You’ve gotta check out more at the Elkabikes’ blog. The brake bridge, track ends and seat tube cluster are WILD.

Oh, and these guys are from Moscow!

Tokyo Fixed Gear Now Carries Enigma Frames

When I think of UK framebuilders, I think of Reynolds tubing, Nervex lugs, bent-rake forks, path racer geometry and a classic paint job. While Enigma definitely nods to all of these, their performance-based cycles are a lot more modern than their predecessors. Made in the UK, from stainless, Ti and good old steel, Enigma is one of the few UK manufacturers who chose domestic over a dockside delivery. Tokyo Fixed Gear is their newest UK dealer, so swing on over to test ride or purchase one of their track, road or commuter frames.

Beautiful Bicycle: Kumo Classichrome Track Frame

I really wish I could have visited KUMO Cycles when I was in Australia. Especially after seeing this Chassichrome track frame. I can identify with large frames and this 60cm Columbus Life beauty was made with Llewellyn lugs, sports a hand carved Kumo BB shell cutout and keeps it classy with a chrome fork and rear triangle. Check out more details at KUMO. Thanks for sharing Harry!
