Merckx Mondays: Scotty’s Eddy Merckx SLX Pista

This is not for the vintage elite, the collectors, the Eroicas, the spoke sniffers, or the internet aesthetes. Do not bother commenting on the lack of period correct toe clips, or the lack of bar tape, or how you don’t like white tires. The bar angle will rub you the wrong way and Scotty will ride on, not giving two shits.

Scotty’s a working messenger in Los Angeles. Scotty’s older than dirt. He walks with a stride, or a cadence that is only found in individuals who live, breathe and sleep track bikes. You won’t see Scotty on a road bike and in fact, you won’t see him on any other bike than this street-thrashed Eddy Merckx SLX pista. The components tell a story, moreso than any museum-grade bicycle will, regardless of heritage.

Like beausage? This bike is for you. Just remember, before you type a critique, Scotty don’t care. Happy Merckx Mondays. Thanks to Tracko for the heads up on this bike!

Mash SF: Chas on Battery Street

All I can think watching this (and after navigating the ever-increasing congested streets of SF last week) is… suckers! Chas steers no-handed with ease through a sea of sedentary car commuters who’d be better off riding bikes in the great city of SF. Nice one Mash!

Seabase is At it Again

“Gran Canaria on the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago, is one of the most diverse and beautiful places to go cycling. It offers spectacular roads and stunning views that put your mind at ease. In January 2015 Patrick Seabase explored the volcanic island in the atlantic ocean on his track bike (ratio 47/17). Preparing himself for an upcoming project – he covered 12000m of altitude throughout 25 hours of freeriding within 6 days.”

Nice one, Patrick!

Photos and words by Chris Lee and Chris Dilts.

This past weekend, racers and spectators gathered for the eighth annual Red Hook Crit. Unlike previous years, this last Saturday provided far more sun and warmth, although racers had to fight against considerable gusts of wind all day.

2015 brought the most diverse field of racers in the history of the Red Hook Crit. With 29 countries represented, it was a melting pot of nationalities staging in the Cruise Terminal, where riders warmed up before the races. Additionally the number of competitors in the women’s field more than doubled from last year, boasting a healthy 79 racers registered.

Like last year, multiple qualifying heats during the day were used to advance and place racers in the two feature races later that night. The men’s field had a new addition of the “Last Chance” race. The “Last Chance” race was a 14 lap crit with the top 10 finishers were added to the feature race.

At the end of the night, Ivan Ravaioli and Ainara Arteaga took home the win, the medals, the custom RHC Cinelli track bike, and the glory.

Mash has been working on a few new projects and part of that is documenting track bikes being thrashed on the streets of SF. This shot of Dylan on California street is amazing. The lean, the composition and those tracks. If you’ve ever ridden down this particular strip of road in SF, you know how rad this is… Keep ripping, Dylan.

Stay tuned for more at Mash!

Some builds come together quickly, while others are more of a slow roast. This one falls into the latter category: a collection of carefully matched parts coming together over a few months. The wait was worth it, though, and Kenjitsu’s (known as 21 Ninjas on Instagram) Parallax project has finally come to fruition with everything in its place.

The simplicity of track bikes is no doubt what led many of us down the road of parts upgrades, but Kenjitsu’s bike goes beyond simply matching colors for the sake of it. The Campy Record Pista crankset and Izumi chain are classic track bling, but this build is firmly situated in the modern era with the Cadence x Ritchey C260 stem, Cinelli NEOS carbon bar and post, and MASH x San Marco Concor rounding out the contact points.

However, it’s the wheels that stand out here. The purple Phil Wood Tsunami Relief hubs – set #02 of five – feature artwork by Wakako from Blue Lug laser engraved by Grayson Yokota. The 90mm flanges are laced to H Plus Son Archetype 32 hole rims via Sapim CX-Ray bladed spokes, making for a truly drool-worthy wheelset.

Kenjitsu capped off the build with a purple Radavist top cap and a pair of NOS Time ATAC World Champion Carbon MTB pedals. Look for Kenjitsu and the Parallax on the streets of Vancouver this spring!

From the qualifying until the half finals there are eight riders in each group but only four riders can make it into the next round. Every lap the last man/woman is going to be kicked out of the race. In the finals the race continues until there is only one left.”

I know we’ve been immersed in NAHBS this past week and everyone’s probably reaching their limit on amazing, custom handmade bicycles but this one needs some exposure. Chris Bishop’s latest track bike is nothing short of amazing. This Supersprint bike has Samson track ends and a clean fastback seat stay, accented by Todd Eroh’s paint. 2015 NAHBS: Repete Cycles Falcon Track

You don’t often see track bikes like this at NAHBS. Fixed gears, sure. Street-track bikes, yeah, you bet. But a Czech national track star’s personal race machine? That’s a first for me. Repete Cycles brought this stealthy beast to NAHBS and it won me over.

AX Lightness bar, stem and post, along with Mavic Comete track wheels and an SRM system. This isn’t your typical track bike. Raced by Jan Kraus for Repete, the 21 year old Czech Team Representative has quite the number of accomplishments under his belt. Do they wear belts with skinsuits? See Jan’s track record at the Repete Cycles Facebook.

2015 NAHBS: Enduro Bearings 24mm Outboard Pista Crankset

One of the best new products I saw at NAHBS this year were these Enduro Bearings 24mm outboard pista cranks. You might ask why these somewhat simple looking cranks would have piqued my interest and guys like Trackosaurus Rex so much and the answer is easy: why not!?

Made in the USA, with 144bcd chainrings in the works as well, these outboard bearings and cranks will retail for approximately $800. Guess what? Road cranks are on the way! What’s old is new again, just way, way better.

In the meanwhile, follow Enduro Bearings‘ Facebook.

2015 NAHBS: LoveBaum Track

Reportage

2015 NAHBS: LoveBaum Track

LoveBaum is a framebuilder pairing from Denver, Colorado started by Chad Lovings and Bryce Baumann. The two initially met in Rifle, Colorado at Yamaguchi’s framebuilding school. Shortly after leaving, they decided to begin building together under the name LoveBaum.

The two bikes at NAHBS bearing the LoveBaum name immediately caught my attention in the rookie builder hallway. The first being this curved seat tube track bike. Made from a mix of True Temper and Columbus Life tubing, Bryce intends to put its stiffness and design to the boards at his local velodrome.

White Industries hubs laced to no-name carbon rims and Challenge Pista tires are powered by the AARN chainring and Dura Ace cranks, polished to a shine. With custom leather work by Carson Leh, the contact points on this bike are different than your average track bike.

A Leh top tube protector keeps the custom fillet brazed bar and stem from chipping the top tube’s beautiful pearlescent paint. This is probably one of the most elegant track bikes at the show and has won me over.
