There have been several storied chapters in R+E Cycles‘ 50-year history but, as Katie Sox describes, the through line has been a commitment to crafting the bikes that best fit their customer’s needs—even when those bikes have five seats. On the brink of new ownership and as they celebrate 50 years of frame building and service, read on for a closer look behind this stalwart in Seattle’s cycling scene.
If you’re tandem curious and want to spend the year accelerating your relationships, check out Rivendell’s Hubbuhhubbuh. Rivendell describes the Hubbuh as:
“A HILLYBIKE tandem for everything from fun family rides with reluctant riders, to let’s go get ’em rides on road, to trails. Loaded or unloaded. It’s speedy on the flats and descents, as all tandems are, and also as all tandems are, slowish up hills.

Tandem’s always been like Fat bikes to me, I don’t really know why but I want one. They’re easy to fall in love with I guess, cartoonish and rad/dorky looking, raising questions about how it would be chasing the sunset on one. Ever since I designed the Sequoia at Specialized about three years ago, I’ve been thinking about how to make a tandem. As a designer and bikeaholic, I always have a million ideas and projects around, 99% never seeing daylight. A Sequoia tandem, however, would be a project fairly easy to pull off if made the right way.
After this weekend’s Floyd’s of Los Angeles ride, I kept thinking to myself, we need more tandems! Handsome Cycles has created a Kickstarter campaign entitled “Ride More Together,” to raise money for people who may not be able to afford the Pillion, their new tandem model. The goal of this campaign is to be able to provide tandems to people who would otherwise not be able to ride a bike, specifically the blind. Handsome has partnered with the Vision Loss Resources of Minnesota to ride with blind students, so if you’d like to support this effort, check out their new Kickstarter.
