The Rapha Women’s 100

Today is International Women’s Day and Rapha is throwing their #WOMENS100 on July 7th.  Here are the details:

The Rapha Women’s 100 – JULY 7th, 2013
We invite you to ride at least 100k with us this July 7th, 2013. This is the same day that the Etape du Tour is happening in France. Each year this event kicks off with some crazy participation number 0f 25,000 people riding the same route as the Tour de France. Unfortunately, the number of women who do this event is quite paltry. So, in an effort to get that number up, we have declared “l’attaque” (that’s French for “attack!”) on this day. Let us see how many women we can get riding on the day!

QUESTION?: Never ridden 100k before? Not a problem.
Over the next 16 weeks – roughly the time before July 7th – we will be providing tips, tricks and general guidelines to get you up and over your first 100k. We have lined up a good amount of bi-weekly (I can tell you this already that it is going to spill over to more than bi-weekly) content focused on getting you there. All brought to you by the fantastic women that we ride and interact with on a daily basis both here in Portland as well as some great celebrities in our little world of cycling (people like Gem Atkinson from Bianchista – who is the great rider and smiley woman in our Spring Summer catalog. You may notice that she likes to wear pearls. Which is awesome.)

There will be more about this in the coming weeks than you could ever imagine. As well, the San Francisco based Women’s Prestige on April 13th (which is full with 24 teams of women) will be a sounding board for what the Rapha Women’s 100 as we hope to inspire all of these ladies to join us in July.

How many women can we get to ride 100k on that day? 100? 1,000? 10,000? 100,000?

How to Follow Along?
How do you know if you’re doing it right? Well, you can’t do it wrong, that is for sure. The #WOMENS100 hashtag is going to be a great place to look to find some of the inspirational women who are helping us get there. Instagram and Twitter, go for it. Strava will also have a page completed by tomorrow to help show how many women have signed up on the day. Also, we have set up an Events tab on the Rapha Facebook Page to help you follow along.

Also, don’t miss out on the very impressive Rapha Women’s collection and the Festa Della Donna sale this season!

Snow Day!

Reportage

Snow Day!

I don’t know about you, but I would have much rather been swimming, soaking in the sun during NAHBS weekend, instead, we all found ourselves stomping through snow. Denver in the winter isn’t exactly warm (although the locals say it is) but that didn’t stop us from going on a quick little ride the morning after NAHBS wrapped up. Ty had his Stinner, I took my new IF 29’r, Josh from Avery took his award winning bike (in jeans and work boots), Tyler from Pearl Velo had his Karate Monkey SS and Kerry had his Gunner (probably the least equipped tool for the job and yet he still crushed it). It was a pack of grown-ass-men goofing off, getting pitted in snow drifts and that’s all I wanted to do the whole time I was in Denver…

In Roads: Handmade Bikes in Denver and Boulder

I’m still on kind of a Denver high and no, I’m not talking about the altitude. I really fell in love with that city and believe me, that’s a big deal considering it was under snow most of the time I was there. In Roads is the aforementioned documentary on handmade bikes in Denver and Boulder. Featuring Salvagetti Bicycle Workshop and Mosiac, with music by Trout Steak Revival. Great work Tyler!

Now I need to make it back when it’s warm!

The 2013 PiNP Calendar: March

This is the third layout of the 2013 PiNP Calendar, entitled “The Lost Highway”. The camera, film used and location are located on the bottom left of the document.

On the first of each month, I’ll be posting a PDF file here on the site, allowing you to print this letter-sized document as you wish. Print as many copies as you’d like. Hand them out to friends or your local shop. It’s intended to be a free offering from the site, as a thank you to all the readers out there.

Spring is just around the corner and that means it’s time for rides that will kick your ass. The place where I go in the US for ass-kicking is Los Angeles. This stretch of the 2 is closed and for good reason. Falling rocks cover the road but man, is it other-worldly.

Enjoy!

Brian Vernor for Argonaut Cycles

Stoked to finally see some of these photos. Brian’s work is always inspirational. Here’s some information from Argonaut:

“We invited Brian Vernor up to Portland a few months ago to turn his lens on Argonaut. The book captures the essence of the brand and as usual Brian did a fantastic job. We produced a very limited run of books which we will have on hand at NAHBS. We will be releasing the digital version on March 5th so everyone can enjoy the wonderful work that Brian and David from Wilderness put together for us.”

See more teasers below and once the digital book is live, I’ll link to it.

I came across these two exceptional photos on Flickr earlier this week and had to share. The top photo was taken at the Hoosier Pass in May 1976 and the bottom, the Blue Ridge Parkway in late July 1976 during the Bikecentennial76 Oregon to Virginia trip 12 friends embarked on. Only 9 completed and you can read more at DDsiple’s Flickr.

Now’s a good time to plan a tour!

I’ve Never Taken This Trail

Reportage

I’ve Never Taken This Trail

“Yeah, I’ve got a route planned, but we might dip off and take this one trail”. No matter how organized you try to make a friendly, chill ride, sometimes the best thing you can do is take that trail. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes you end up walking a hobo path over a twelve foot drop onto limestone but more often than not, you can make due.

Most of the trails here in Austin are very cross-bike friendly. Some are not, but we avoid those for the most part. People say, “get a MTB”, but they’re also the ones driving their cars to do a piece of 5 mile singletrack. You don’t want to ride a MTB out 15 miles on the road, then up a 18% sealed climb before you bomb down a scenic descent. But a cross bike…

When Kyle was in town, I pulled together a little ride with some friends. We spent about 40% of the time on sealed road and 50% on gravel, singletrack or dirt. That missing 10% was on this one “oh shit” hiking trail we poached on a piece of government land. We made it out alive, save for Chris flipping over his bars and one flat tire. John even rode a stock Nature Boy up some very steep faces. It was impressive.

Beers were had and stories were made. Bottom line is, we had a fucking blast and all lived to tell the tale / Instagram it but no Strava for this route. I wanna keep some of it a secret. We ended up doing +/- 40 miles and about 3,500′.

While the Fixed Mag cover is a beautiful sealed road, this road epitomizes unsealed beauty. Andy posted this around the beginning of the New Year and I was holding off to post it so I didn’t jinx my trip back to Melbourne. I’ll be staring down this frontage road once again and I can’t wait. This truly is one of the most beautiful places on Earth and having ridden it already, maybe it’ll be easier? Who knows. Andy and Dan are already threatening to “break me again“…

I don’t know about you, but January flew by for me. While most of you are still having to ride in inclement weather, I thought I’d share some Texas sun, if only as a reminder that Spring is almost here.

Enjoy!

Crossin’ Town

Reportage

Crossin’ Town

While I try to ride everyday, it’s usually impossible. Believe it or not, it’s a lot of work to run this site but that’s why I’ve gotten in the habit of looking at riding as “coffee rides”. I usually kit up, hop on the cross bike and kick around on the local trails and roads, inevitably ending up at the best coffee bar in town, Frank for an Americano. The rides are never more than 20 miles or so and take about an hour and a half. Something even the busiest blogger can find time for.

When Kyle came to town last week (I already miss that little shit!), I took him on a coffee ride. We cross’d town and had a freaking blast, stopping at every jib spot we could find along the way until we got to the Hill of Life and the Greenbelt. Once there, we encountered a few falls, some sketchy, techy lines and a helmet-stealing dog. It was a lot of fun.

I love that frame builders, like Mosaic are taking the initiative to tell their story through narratives like this. Sure, it’s marketing but kudos to encouraging people to get out and ride. I’d love to see something similar unfold from a number of other builders too.

What I should have said was “cheers”. We did a great cross ride today and cracking open a cold one on top of a big hill with friends was the highlight of the weekend. 35mm photos on the way and I can’t wait to share them with you all!
