Mission Workshop _ PiNP Bike Tour: Day 08

I think I speak for the whole gang when I say that we’re all very happy to be done with the bike tour of China. It wasn’t so much the distance, because on paper, it’s not that much, totaling around 300 miles. But when you consider everything we encountered, it was one of the most sobering experiences of my life.

One of the things I did look forward to each night were the group rides. For me, it’s rad to see what and how people are riding in each city. Hangzhou was no different from the other cities. Most of the riders were young, most had cheap “rainbow fixies” but some had insane track bikes, ready for the boards…

Mission Workshop _ PiNP Bike Tour: Day 06

After our ride yesterday, we all passed out early and woke up ready to spin our legs. There’s a nice climb around the corner from our lodge, so the track bike guys from Factory 5 and I headed out for a juant. Seeing those guys crush a Cat 3 climb on track bikes was once again, impressive. Meanwhile, I was shooting photos of them and the scenic roads. Short, sweet, 10 miles and 1,300′ that provided ample photo opportunities.

The only other thing on our agenda was to hike through the bamboo forest, which proved to be quite the experience. It was incredible seeing the farmers mark, harvest and load up the 30′ stalks in such efficient order. Even though the air here in Moganshan is clean, there’s still an eerie haze floating about the hills…

Mission Workshop _ PiNP Bike Tour: Day 04

Late last night, James Adamson, the videographer on the trip realized that he needed a solid day of shooting for Mission Workshop. So rather than wake up early and dashing to the next city, we revisited an area we came across yesterday for a video and photo session. Shooting video in China is a lot easier than you’d expect, except when you run into local politics. James really wanted to shoot up on the hill range that we rode late yesterday afternoon, but they never allowed bikes up before. We just so happened to miss the security guards yesterday. Today, not so much.

Security, the park officials, the local police and town official weren’t having it. After some bribing and a few phone calls, we made it into the park, bikes and all. But not before shooting some around town. When we finally finished up, it was time to head to Jiaxing, a Tier 3 city in China. Instead of 200+ riders, we were greeted with about 10 and to be honest, that was about all we could manage tonight, for it’s been a long trip thus far…

Hypebeast Has my Essentials

On this trip, I packed as lightly as I could, but I made sure I had my absolute essentials with me. Hypebeast has a profile up on their site, profiling these items, stating why I brought what and how each will be used as I travel through China. Head over and check it out!

Mission Workshop _ PiNP in Taipei

Taipei was not at all what I expected but in a good way. From walking the market streets, to climbing and descending the surrounding mountain ranges, we had a rad time in Taiwan. Check out this video Adventure Refugee made for Mission Workshop during our stay. Vimeo is blocked here in China so I haven’t seen the final edit but the rough cut looked pretty damn good.

A Day in 20 Photos: 03.20.2013

Ok, I know I’m going against the category of A Day in 10 Photos but I couldn’t narrow it down to less than 20. Plus, the galleries look nice with two rows of photos.

We were all pretty tired come Wednesday and the last place I wanted to go was a tradeshow but the allure of the Taipei cycle show was enticing. A quick walk of the aisles and I had seen everything worth seeing. The juxtaposition of an international company’s booth like Mavic right next to a Taiwanese bootleg version was quite comical. Most of the products I had seen at Interbike and the show was smaller than NAHBS this year. We were done seeing everything in under two hours.

From there, we made it out for some food before heading to the Mission Workshop and Voyager party at Werd Magazine where some of the many locals rolled through and had a few drinks. What happened afterwards is the reason why I didn’t make a post yesterday. We were all up too late, partying too hard and feeling like crap the next day. At least I’m over my jetlag and reenergized now, ready for a busy day ahead…

When this project was first proposed to me, all I thought was “this is too good to be true” and after what seems to be a maddening process of pulling everything together, we’re good to go! Here’s the official blurb from Mission Workshop:

“Follow John Watson of Prollyisnotprobably.com and the Mission Workshop crew as they ride through China’s Yangtze river delta on a photo exploration of bike culture with the help of the guys at Factory Five. Visit the Mission Workshop Blog as they travel through the world’s largest urban population in Shanghai and also explore the ancient architecture of the Chinese countryside.”

To start off the trip, I’ll be in Taiwan in time for the Taipei International Cycle Show before we fly out to Shanghai. This is one part of the world I’ve always wanted to see and I cannot wait to share my photos with you all.

Taylor Stitch for Mission Workshop: Dearborn Overshirt

All of my long sleeve dress shirts are Taylor Stitch and we all know that Mission Workshop makes superior bags. So when these two get together, you know it’ll be good. Here’s the low down on the Dearborn Overshirt:

“The Dearborn Overshirt was the result of a summer project between Mission Workshop and Taylor Stitch. Taylor Stitch is an independent shirt maker, creating new styles of small batch shirts. The Dearborn shirt is the first effort of combining the best aspects of both companies.

Taylor Stitch constructed the garment in San Francisco using traditional and time-proven techniques building a shirt that will hold up under daily abuse with a fit made to cover base layers without being overly bulky.

From Mission Workshop, the Dearborn inherited technical aspects such as 3X Dry® which repels water and stains and aides in wicking off moisture from the skin. It is built from Scoeller’s Turkish cotton with added stretch. The S-spring snaps and underarm eyelets are imported from Germany. And as small detail, the chest pocket is ported for your media.”

Interbike 2012: Mission Workshop Introduces the Trigger and Torre Jackets

This year, Mission Workshop opted out of the expense of undertaking Interbike. Instead, they brought their new products with them to the show floor. For Fall / Winter 2012, they’re introducing two new jackets, the Trigger and the Torre. First off, the Trigger is MW’s take on the cycling centric, urban riding jacket. It’s a more dedicated cycling fit than the Orion but is still comfortable as a fashion piece off the bike. It’s Shoeller WB-400 fabric has 4-way stretch, is windproof and highly water resistant. The Trigger ships October 15th and will retail at $285.

Next up is the Torre, or the classic merino hoody. The material is a proprietary 18.9 micron New Zealand Merino Wool with added stretch to increase mobility and flexibility while riding. Thumb holes, added zips, vents and a rear pocket are a few details that make the Torre one of the most practical cycling hoodies. The Torre ships November 1st and will retail at $235.

Expect more information at Mission Workshop shortly.
