Return of the Flying Scotsman

Return of the Flying Scotsman

I just listened to this video while I was packing to leave NYC. Talk about an inspirational story. It’s a shame that he has to resort to a human-powered land speed record because the UCI has it out for him. Here’s the background:

“Meet Graeme Obree. “When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.”

These words of wisdom from Jonathan Swift certainly apply to Graeme Obree and his treatment in the world of cycling. A man castigated for triumphing innovation. The Flying Scotsman broke the World Hour record twice and won the World Championships on two occasions, combining ruthless ambition and a unique investigative engineering nous that propelled him ahead of his peers.

We visit him in Saltcoats, Scotland, 45 minutes outside Glasgow where we find Obree preparing for another World Record attempt – the human-powered land speed record.

Full Frame Collective: Personal Series – Crihs Thormann

Photos by Dylan Bigby

I know I’ve been cropping portrait-orientation photos here on the site but these two photos are too good to put on another page. Crihs was in SF this winter, escaping the NYC cold and having a blast riding the hills of the city. Full Frame Collective did a great Personal Series on him while he was there and it’s definitely worth your time to check it out. They also touch on why Crihs spells his name like that… Head to FFC for the scoop!

The Ned Ludd Market Bike

One of my favorite projects at the 2012 NAHBS was this Ira Ryan-fabricated Ned Ludd Market Bike. I met Jason in Sacramento and heard most of what he says here in this video over tacos at Steve Rex‘s spot one night. Jason’s a passionate individual and seeing this project get some much-deserved attention has got to be inspirational. Exceptional!

More on those Tanner bags tomorrow.

FlwriderTV Interviewed me at the 2012 NAHBS

I hate hearing myself talk and seeing myself on video but I’m sure that’s the case with everyone. While at the 2012 NAHBS, I met up with the Flwrider TV crew and they just posted up the video. There’s a few shots of my Bishop road in there and I talk about my plans for 2012. I haven’t seen Brian since 2009 and it was nice to catch up.

Thanks guys!
