Josh and His Salsa Vaya Tourer

Ever since my Geekhouse got stolen (R.I.P.), I’ve been on a commuter and touring bike kick. Austin has a ton of great builds rolling around and when I can, I stop to admire them. My riding buddy Josh has a great Salsa Vaya that he picked up not too long ago. When I bumped into him yesterday, I had to take some photos of it. It’s nothing special by any means but it’s a great build and his OG Chrome bag shows lots of use, so I met him at the bar where he works, the Liberty and shot some portraits.

Icarus Frames: Korosuke’s Road

Even if this bike didn’t have a feather on the headtube, or the name Icarus anywhere on it, I could still tell it’s from the shop of Ian Sutton. With everyone and their mother ripping this dude off, I’m glad to see Ian’s still got some detailing tricks up his sleeve.

That head tube badge is still one of the best out there! See more of Korosuke’s lovely road bike at Icarus Frames!

Andy’s Signal Commuter

Andy’s Signal Commuter

Seeing a show bike in a booth, at a convention center is one thing but bumping into it on the street is another treat. While I was in LA, I met Andy, the owner of this beautiful robin’s egg blue Signal Cycles commuter. I had seen this bike before, at the 2012 NAHBS but being able to actually take it for a spin around the block, as I looked for a photo spot, was an honor. It really did ride like a dream and it’s been everything Andy asked for, and more.

Time to buy this Map 650b Disk-ville. $6,800 gets you this complete bike, locked and loaded with the nicest quality parts. This was at the 2012 NAHBS (as a raw frame) and is quite the looker. A Golden Saddle Surly One By Townie

Reportage

A Golden Saddle Surly One By Townie

It doesn’t take a lot to classy up a stock build, or even a frameset. Especially when it comes to a Surly. These “do anything” bikes are great. Throw some dirt drops, barcons and knobbies and you’ve got an off-roader, camping mobile. Or roll one stock and race cross. Perhaps you just want to have a nice, balanced and smooth, reliable ride to scoot around on. The latter was the inspiration for this recent Golden Saddle Cyclery customer build.

A 1×10 is ideal for a city commute. Then, by adding a tried and true Wald basket, a Brooks, one slick Archive x Tracko bag to the mix, along with a mix of Paul Components and some solid wheels, you’ve got a stylish, balleur and relatively affordable ride.

Bike to Work Week Chicago

“Honestly I get to work in like 10 minutes” “It’s a lot faster than fuckin’ takin’ a bus”. Well said. Let’s all celebrate the ride to work. It is a lot better than anything else. But can we please bury that song? It’s been used in every video like this!

The 2012 Fairdale Bikes Kick Ass!

The 2012 Fairdale Bikes Kick Ass!

Wow. To think that Fairdale started off last year with really simple singlespeeds and have branched out into everyone’s soon-to-be-favorite commuter bikes… The new Fairdale line is looking great. From the simple chromed Coaster, to the Flyer 26″ cruiser, Step-through 26″ (check out the top tube flip!) and the Weekender Disk, the whole line has something for everyone. Your local Full Factory-distributed shop will have these in stock at the end of the month.

The coolest thing about the Weekender is that Taj is about to embark on one of the best touring routes in the country on Saturday. He’s taking his Weekender from Portland to SF on a two-week tour with Sandy Carson. Jealous!

Expect more from that trip soon, but for now, head to Fairdale and check out the offerings… and on a related note, the 2012 Sunday! collection is up at Defgrip. Check that out too.

Giro: Reverb Session 1 – Chris McNally

Giro will be rolling out a series of these videos to promote their Reverb helmets this year, beginning with this profile on artist Chris McNally:

“Chris McNally is a San Francisco-based artist who fell in love with bicycles and art at an early age. As an illustrator, the need to get out for a ride has always been a part of Chris’ creative process, even if the ride is just across town to his studio. In this first session we ride along with Chris on the streets of San Francisco, from his home in the Richmond to his studio in the outer Mission district, as he talks about how important the ride is to his life and work.”

Nicolai Argon Road / Touring / Racing Frameset

Nicolai Argon Road / Touring / Racing Frameset

I’ll admit, I saw neon and thought “oh pretty”, then I read up on Nicolai’s Argon road / touring / tracing frameset (yes, I have no idea how those geometries overlap). But the color, named “alarm dizzy camou”, is probably what caught Death Spray Custom‘s eye. As far as the bike is concerned, it’s Gates compatible and their description seems very, um, German:

“It has to be said that the Argon Road is not your conventional road bike. There are no smooth welds, no intricate lugs and no carbon tubes. However, you can not fail to be convinced by its superior stiffness to weight ratio. Indeed, both the torsional and the longitudinal stiffness of the Argon Road are almost unrivalled and it significantly outperforms carbon competitors in this respect. (Test EFBe Institute 2006) So how does a rider benefit from this? On long climbs in the mountains the Argon Road saves energy. On long Alpine descents the rigidity allows unparalleled tracking – it corners like it is on rails. After all, what is better when road-racing than being just that little bit faster? ”

I just like the paint.
