This is a great photo of some great people, talking about great bikes. I’m not sure Tyler Johnson wants his Flickr advertised so I’ll just leave it at that.

Look, I know this blog can be a tad narcissistic from time to time but as a “photographer”, I rarely find myself behind the glass. Or in this case, behind Zeiss glass. So when I see a rad photo of me and a homie, I have to give it some love. I had a fucking, absolute blast in SF last time and it was all because of a rad network of friends I’ve made over the years. Say what you will about the point and shoot 35mm camera craze that’s enveloped the young people in major cities throughout the US but Full Frame Collective has some of the most talented photographers running the show. Take Terry B for example. When he’s not shotgunning fruit juice at the hands of 18 year olds, he’s taking snaps with his ultra-wide Zeiss lens on his Contax SLR.

I really, honestly have very little recollection of this roll. Rather than deleting a bunch of photos, I’m putting them all up. Sorry Crihs. With everyone in town for RideNStyle, Chas decided to have a party at the Messenger Mansion. As expected, a ton of people showed up for the band and the booze but stayed for the shenanigans. This included drawing all over poor Jerome and throwing water balloons as we downed a bottle of Bookers.
As the night got out of hand, Chas relocated the party to Dolores where a highschool prom had apparently ended. The rest of the night was spent convincing girls in sequined dresses to fly down a metal slide on a skateboard. Yeah, blurry night.

Remember the story about how Crihs stole my Icarus track bike after a killer party at the Messenger Mansion (more on that tomorrow) and sent me an Instagram ransom? If you don’t brush up on it here. So imagine my surprise when I just got a bunch of film back from SF and found this on one of the rolls. Amazing. Crihs, you really out did yourself here buddy.

I spent a lot of time rolling around with Jake during the SF shenanigans weekend. He’s been uploading a few 35mm scans over at his Flickr. I loved the one of me riding the Icarus and this one of the Messenger Mansion.
Sometimes, you just need to go off and take those roads you ride past everyday, or jump over the fence that says “No Trespassing”. These shots were all compiled during a few days I spent out wandering the hills and forests on my road bike.

I’ve been a long time fanboy of Dan Chabanov, in case you can’t tell. He rode through the alleycat rankings in NYC, raced at Kissena and then moved rapidly up through the road racing circuit. Last year, he even raced for Richard Sachs. Before the Red Hook Crit, he and his Foundation teammates went to Arizona to train and race.
While Dan was there, he shot some disposable cameras for me and when I was in NYC last month, he dropped them off on me. These four rolls follow Dan on solo rides through Oro Valley to Oracle, on training rides with his team, in hotels, back porch haircuts and finally, a 75-minute long crit.
The thing that’s most interesting to me about the subject is that Dan’s a bike racer with a photography background. His playful and whimsical photographs really paint a portrait of what it’s like to travel, train and race. For me, this was a very compelling Guest Gallery. I love that they disassemble their bikes completely and fit them in suitcases. Brilliant.

I’ve been enjoying the steady stream of photos on the Extra Bigger blog. You’re following them, right?
Jon, Ross and I have been planning a weekend getaway to Colorado Bend State Park for some time now. Texas has a lot of rich, lush campsites, all within riding distance of Austin. Bend, TX was an obvious choice, due to the distance and route it would require us to do in a day. I knew it would be about 120 miles each way and depending on our route, between 5,000′ and 8,000′ in climbing. In the end, we opted out of the extra 3,000′ of climbing, which was a smart move.
We left first thing Friday morning, around 6am and headed out through the neighborhoods to Bee Caves, where we split off on 71. From there, we hit 281 and finally, CR 580, all the way into Bend. While some of the roads were peaceful country roads, a lot of the day was spent on highway shoulders. I brought my Woodville, Ross was on his Sachs and Jon, his Icarus. Since I was the only one who had a touring bike, I carried the food, my supplies, tent and Jon’s tarps, which he planned on making a shelter out of.
The guys carefully selected their goods and we set off. I shot 4 rolls of color film (Portra 800 and 400), as well as a waterproof, disposable camera. The following image gallery is from the entire weekend of camping, swimming and the rides to and from the park. The ride out came in at 117 miles and 4,500′, the ride back was 116 and 4,100′.
This gallery is massive, with over 100 photos and each have a brief description, so don’t forget to read the captions.

I hung out with Chas from TCB Courier / MASH / #fixiefamous a lot in NYC during the Red Hook Crit weekend. He’s one of my favorite dudes to hang with. Why? He’s always down to drink, loves to talk shit to Crihs and his riding style is very photogenic. These few photos were taken on a quick ride through Brooklyn but are damn rad.
Edit: Gallery fixed!

Here are two random 35mms from the road here in Austin. The one of the tree was a gem. So eerie. And I wish I had taken that sign later that day…
When I got my last Recent Roll back from this show, I could have sworn that I shot more. Alas, I found some scraps in another roll, filled with all the expected goodness.

At this point, I had traveled from Australia, to NAHBS, to NYC and had maybe slept in my bed in Austin two nights in three weeks. So what did I do? I went on a bender, starting with Benders, the best bar in SF. Then the rest of three days I was in town just got melted into half of a Recent Roll.

I’ve been enjoying the shit out of my Icarus track bike and recently, I tracked down an 1 1/8″ Columbus MAX stainless fork crown for her, along with MAX blades. While I love the unicrown fork, the main reason we chose it was for it’s beefiness, when compared to the MAX tubesets. There aren’t any steel track forks with 1 1/8″ steerers that can stand up next to the MAX downtube. The unicrown was also a bit of a nod the Chris Chance bikes, which were built on the same block as Ian’s old shop. Still, how could I say no to a full Columbus MAX track bike? More to come, once I get my hands on the bugga’. Ian’s shipping out the raw fork this week so I can polish the crown before paint.
I don’t know what spawned this post, I guess I just liked this random photo I took from a Recent Roll with 1600 Fuji Natura. That’s a pesky film to use but sometimes the grain works just right.
Grade school. It’s a place where you go for life’s lessons. No matter how strong of a rider you think you are, a few hours in grade school each day will whip your ass in shape. Granted we don’t have mountains here, but we’ve got good climbing and this Recent Roll is dedicated to the people who have put in work the past few weeks on the hills. It’s from a few different films, hence the change in grain and color.

I feel like this party ruined me more than any other night in Brooklyn. The 2012 Red Hook Crit was a huge success and after the race, everyone headed over to The Bell House for the official after party. Let’s see, a bunch of hungry, dehydrated racers, good bourbon selection and a bunch of beer. It was a recipe for liver disaster. I even caught a few of the Mash dudes a little loose. Alex, you still owe me a drink!

This black-metal son of Odin is half of the Great Escape, the tale of a Göteborg couple who are on a journey to cross the great American west in search of the most crushing music. HELLHOMMUS is from Göteborg but he’s not into that shitty technical death metal. He likes the real shit. That black shit. Darker than your bottom bracket shell and harder than 7075 aluminum. I spent a cloudy, rainy afternoon with HELLHOMMUS at the dead pool in Asgard, where we read the poetry of skalds and planned his conquest of the US.
