Speedvagen’s Ready Made Urban Racer

Speedvagen’s Ready Made Urban Racer

The Urban Racer sure did make waves around here when it was launched back in 2015. Like all of Speedvagen’s bikes, it was a bespoke, handmade-in-Portland frame, with all the details we’ve come to expect from the Vanilla Workshop. However, many people didn’t see the value in the Urban Racer. The debate was heated.

Well, now you can get an Urban Racer as part of Speedvagen’s Ready Made program, with a stock build and base pricing down to $3495. You might be inclined to say “that’s still a lot of money for a coaster brake city bike”. And it is. But for some, it might be just what they needed to get in the door on one of these stripped down beauties.

Check out some more photos below, and get the details on the Ready Made Urban Racer at Speedvagen.

No “I” in Academy: Inside the Bicycle Academy

Knowledge is best passed, like a torch, through experience. There are many institutions which educate hopeful framebuilders in the art of design, construction, and finishing of a bicycle frame. They each take their own approach to this process and many of our favorite builders have learned in this hands-on, classroom environment.

Nestled in an industrial building, within the town of Frome in Somerset, the Bicycle Academy threw their towel into the framebuilding education ring a few years back and in that time, have grown their curriculum into an impressive institution. All this could not have been possible if it were not for the successful crowdfunding operation and the 183 people who donated money and 23 individuals who donated their skills to jumpstart the Bicycle Academy.

Adeline and Her Mercredi Cross Bike

Reportage

Adeline and Her Mercredi Cross Bike

Mercredi translates to Wednesday in French, the day of the week when many school children have time off from their studies and are encouraged to play outdoors. I thought that was a very clever and insightful name for Adeline’s framebuilding company. Only a year into building and only three years into riding bikes, this wasn’t the only time Adeline’s perspective impressed me. She’s had an interesting experience with bicycles in that time, many of which have shaped her outlook on not only the industry but what she would like to do with her brand.

Adeline began framebuilding at the Bicycle Academy. A small, yet thorough school that teaches the skills needed to build a frame. Adeline was one of these curious cadets, who signed up and began her first bike. A few months later and Bespoke Bristol landed on the calendar, prompting Shand Cycles to win the Columbus Award. At which point, Shand contacted Andrew from the Bicycle Academy, asking if he had any hopeful students who would benefit from the tubeset. Someone immediately came to mind.

Once Andrew gifted Adeline the tubeset, she rented a small space and was able to begin building frames for her teammates. Only a year later and she too found herself at Bespoke Bristol, where she won the hearts of Columbus and Chris King, prompting them to award her creations.

I had the pleasure of spending a few days with Adeline, where we were able to discuss framebuilding, racing, bike rides and the UK cycling culture. I can’t wait to see where she goes and Mercredi Bikes go this year! If you’re going to Grinduro Scotland, be on the lookout for Adeline on her new MTB she’s building. She’ll be racing against Tom Donhou and Ricky Feather at the event – all in good fun – but I’m rooting for the underdog!

Mosaic Goes Full March Madness

Mosaic Goes Full March Madness

To be honest, I’m not enough of a “ball sport” fan to really know what March Madness is, yet I appreciate the execution here. Then again, it is Mosaic, a framebuilder known for their precision. Here’s what’s going on with these two bikes!

“The timing of the NAHBS show happened to coincide with the start of the NCAA March Madness tournament. Paul Keodprom from Blacksmith Cycle in Toronto and his bud Eryn Stott made the drive down to Charlotte to hang with the crew from Mosaic Bespoke Bicycles, which organically turned into the production of these collegiate themed Mosaic RS2 framesets. The two schools might not have met each other in this year’s tournament, but it’s a Syracuse vs. Michigan showdown whenever these two bikes hit the road.”

Boneshaker Magazine

I can get behind this!

“It’s the wind in your hair; two brave wheels and the horizon. Boneshaker is a perfect-bound publication with a strong design aesthetic and contributors from all over the world. We’ve celebrated the chrome-shining custom rides of the Sudan, investigated rebel bicycle gangs in LA, hit the dirt roads of New Mexico. Bespoke framebuilders, bike polo champions and bold activists have told us their tales. We’re for road cyclists, downhillers, fixie freaks, couriers, commuters, tourers, BMX bandits and everyone in between.

No training tips, race diets or adverts. It’s not how much your bike weighs that matters, but where it takes you. It’s not how fast you got there, but what you saw along the way.”

Inside and Out of the Falconer Cycles Workshop

Reportage

Inside and Out of the Falconer Cycles Workshop

“I don’t have a studio, I have a workshop. I’m not an artist, I’m a fabricator…”

We were talking about the mystique surrounding custom frames and the public’s perception, or in many cases the perpetuation of preciousness associated with “bespoke” frames. Cameron Falconer isn’t an artist, he makes straight forward, utilitarian machines meant to shred. Sure, they’re tailored to fit and Cam’s years of racing and riding influence a lot of their nuances (water bottle cage placement for example) but these are bicycles, not art…

What Makes the Vanilla Workshop and Speedvagen Move

While the public may know about the Vanilla Workshop and Speedvagen, they might not know the inner-workings or exactly how the two brands operate under one roof. There’s a misconception that Sacha White runs the whole show with maybe one or two other people. When in reality, it takes a whole team to keep things moving.

Recently, the Vanilla Workshop and Speedvagen shared a little insight to help people better understand what really makes them move. Read on below!

The 2015 Rouge Roubaix Builder Challenge

With the success of last year’s event, a bunch of us got talking and cooked up this idea:

Ghost Peloton

This one’s interesting:

“Created for the grand depart of the Tour de France 2014 from Yorkshire, Ghost Peloton fuses performance cycling with athletic choreography performed by Phoenix Dance Theatre’s dancers, and the varied landscapes of race route.

Each rider, bike and performer was illuminated using NVA’s bespoke LED light suit, which can instantaneously change colour, flash-rate and luminosity. The rhythm of movement from the choreographed actions of massed participants becomes a source of creativity in itself, extending perception of the immediate setting.

It’s epic public art, operating at the grandest scale, where physical surroundings become an open canvas carrying a new visual language, expressing mood and movement, comprised of form, colour and line.”

Lino Messori

This is a great video profile on a frame builder many of us have never even heard of. Myself included…

“Lino Messori said of himself “I am nobody, but I did a bit of everything”.
Born in 1926, in Modena, Italy, Lino quickly became a local fixture both for his incomparable skills and his personality.

A master frame builder who also followed a myriad of different passions, spanning from singing with opera legend Luciano Pavarotti to never losing a single boxing match.
Lino Messori made 150 bespoke bikes over the span of his career, many of which were very special for the time and still today.”

Fifo Cycles for the Cinelli Winged Store

Cinelli teamed up with one of my favorite cap manufacturers on their latest collaboration. This go-round, they commissioned Fifo Cycles to design and produce an homage to the 1988 Seoul Summer Games and the Soviet racers who took home 4 medals on the Laser pursuit bikes at the track.

There’s something very Russian post-constructivist about the design and I love it!
